Tonsils: Far From Useless

When was the last time you thought about your tonsils?

For over 100 years, your tonsils were thought to be of no use. For years doctors were surgically removing people’s tonsils because they were thought to be “left over” from our evolutionary past. However, tonsils are in fact a vital part of our immune system!

Scientists have found that your tonsils help protect you from harmful bacteria, viruses and other invaders. When they swell up in your throat, it means that they are busy doing battle with bad germs. They are the first line of defense, restraining the spread of viruses and bacteria to the rest of your body.

The next time you have swollen tonsils, thank God for the amazing disease fighting system he has created for us!
