Dinosaurs and the Bible

Introduction: The Fascination and the Questions

Dinosaurs fascinate people of all ages. From towering Tyrannosaurus rexes to long-necked Brachiosauruses, these incredible creatures have captured our imaginations, our museums, and our movies. But for many Christians, a pressing question arises: What does the Bible say about dinosaurs?

Did dinosaurs roam the earth millions of years ago, long before man? Were they part of God’s original creation? And where do creatures like the behemoth and leviathan fit into this picture?

These are more than just scientific curiosities—they’re worldview questions that tie into our understanding of Genesis, the fossil record, the age of the earth, and ultimately, the authority of Scripture. At Educate For Life, we believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. So let’s explore what it has to say about dinosaurs—with clarity, confidence, and conviction.

Dinosaurs According to the Bible

Where Do Dinosaurs Appear in the Bible?

You won’t find the word “dinosaur” in most Bible translations. That’s because the term wasn’t coined until 1841 by Sir Richard Owen—long after the Bible was written. But that doesn’t mean dinosaurs aren’t mentioned in the Bible.

In the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Job, we find descriptions of massive, mysterious creatures:

“Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox… his bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. He is the chief of the ways of God…” — Job 40:15–19

“Canst thou draw out leviathan with a hook?… Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Smoke goeth out of his nostrils…” — Job 41:1,19–20

These descriptions don’t match any known animal alive today. Some Bible footnotes may suggest a hippopotamus or elephant, but these fall short of matching the scale and majesty described. Many believe behemoth and leviathan in Job could be descriptions of what we now call dinosaurs or large, extinct reptiles.

Genesis and the Creation of Dinosaurs

The Genesis account states:

“God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves… And God saw that it was good.” — Genesis 1:21

“And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds…” — Genesis 1:25

This includes every land animal, sea creature, and yes—what we might call dinosaurs.

From a biblical perspective, God created dinosaurs and man during the six days of creation, specifically on Day Five (sea creatures) and Day Six (land animals and man). This means, according to the Bible, man and dinosaurs lived at the same time.

This interpretation is consistent with a young earth creationist view, which holds that the earth is only thousands of years old, rather than millions of years. It affirms that God created all things fully formed and functional—ready to glorify Him from the start.

What About the Fossil Record and Millions of Years?

Interpreting the Evidence Through a Biblical Lens

Mainstream science teaches that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago—about 65 million years ago, and that they went extinct long before humans appeared. This view relies heavily on radiometric dating and an evolutionary timeline.

But at Educate For Life, we teach that the fossil record can also be interpreted through the lens of the Genesis account.

  • The fossils of dinosaurs—many of them found in twisted, contorted positions—are often located in rock layers associated with rapid burial.
  • This is exactly what we’d expect from a global catastrophe like the Great Flood, as described in Genesis 6–9.
  • Soft tissue remnants have even been found in some dinosaur fossils, which challenges the idea that they are millions of years old.

So rather than viewing dinosaur fossils as evidence of millions of years, they can point to a sudden, worldwide judgment—a clear reminder of when sin entered the world and disrupted God’s perfect creation.

Fossils and the Great Puzzle of History

The fossil record is often seen as a timeline of earth’s history, but that timeline depends on assumptions about the past. The biblical worldview reminds us that we weren’t there to observe these processes—but God was. His Word gives us an eyewitness account of creation, the Fall, and the Flood, which dramatically reshaped the world and left behind a record of death and disaster.

Dinosaurs, therefore, are not relics of a lost evolutionary past. They are part of God’s good creation, preserved in stone as evidence of a world gone wrong—and a call to return to the Creator.

Dinosaurs and the Great Flood

Could Dinosaurs Have Been on the Ark?

If dinosaurs were alive with man, then they must have been present during Noah’s time. Genesis 6:19 tells us that every kind of land animal was brought onto the ark:

“And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you.”

This would include different kinds of dinosaurs. But how?

  • The average dinosaur wasn’t a towering beast—many were the size of sheep or chickens.
  • God could have brought juvenile dinosaurs, which are smaller, easier to care for, and capable of reproducing.
  • The ark, built according to God’s specific dimensions, was large enough to accommodate a wide range of animal species.

After the flood, many dinosaurs may have struggled to survive in the drastically changed post-Flood world, leading to their extinction. Harsh climates, lack of food sources, and human activity could have contributed to their decline.

This explanation fits the evidence and maintains the integrity of the biblical narrative.

Were Dinosaurs Witnessed in the Ancient World?

Dragons in History

Many ancient cultures—from China to England—have legends of dragons. These dragon-like beasts share remarkable similarities to dinosaurs. Could these be living dinosaurs seen by early humans?

In Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Native American lore, dragon creatures had long necks, tails, wings, or scales. Some even breathed fire, much like the leviathan described in Job 41.

The Bible mentions dragons multiple times in symbolic and descriptive language, including the word “tanninim” in Hebrew, often translated as sea monsters or dragons.

The overlap of historical descriptions and fossil evidence suggests that dinosaurs and man lived at the same time, and that some living dinosaurs may have survived post-Flood for centuries, gradually fading into extinction.

Did Dinosaurs Die Before Sin Entered the World?

This is a key theological question. If dinosaurs lived millions of years before man, then death existed before Adam’s sin. But the Bible clearly states:

“By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin…” — Romans 5:12

This affirms that death came after the fall, not before. Therefore, the idea that dinosaurs lived and died millions of years ago contradicts the biblical timeline.

Instead, we understand that dinosaurs were created by God, lived alongside man, and died off after the Fall and possibly after the Flood—fitting with a young earth model.

This worldview doesn’t just make room for dinosaurs—it makes sense of them in a way that honors biblical truth and reinforces faith in God’s Word.

What Dinosaurs Teach Us About God

Dinosaurs show us the power and creativity of our Creator in ways that few other creatures can. Their extraordinary size, complex biology, and incredible diversity captivate our imaginations and point unmistakably to a powerful and intentional Designer. Consider the strength and majesty of creatures like the behemoth, whose immense size and unparalleled strength described in the book of Job demonstrate the unmatched power of God. Or ponder the mystery of the leviathan, whose terrifying presence and awe-inspiring description evoke the profound majesty and sovereignty of the Creator.

Moreover, the intricate design evident in fossilized dinosaur bones testifies to God’s detailed craftsmanship and creative genius. Every bone, joint, and muscle fiber speaks of meticulous design, suggesting not random evolution but thoughtful creation. These details remind us vividly of the Bible’s declaration that the heavens and the earth were created by God with purpose, beauty, and precision.

Teaching children about dinosaurs doesn’t need to be a stumbling block to faith; instead, it can powerfully reinforce our belief in an all-wise and powerful God. Dinosaurs offer us an incredible opportunity to engage young minds with the wonders of creation, fostering a deep sense of awe and reverence. We can present these magnificent creatures as part of God’s broader narrative—a testament not only to His unmatched power but also to His profound creativity and loving attention to detail.

Dinosaurs also remind us of deeper spiritual truths central to the Christian faith:

  • They vividly illustrate that creation is inherently good yet marred by sin, reflecting humanity’s own spiritual journey from perfection to brokenness, and finally, redemption through Jesus Christ.
  • Their extinction serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of sin and judgment, reinforcing the reality of accountability to our Creator.
  • Their existence and subsequent disappearance also highlight God’s promise of restoration—pointing toward a future where God will renew and restore all creation.

Ultimately, dinosaurs inspire wonder, curiosity, and awe. When understood through the lens of Scripture, they don’t simply represent fascinating prehistoric animals but become powerful testimonies to the glory, creativity, justice, and redemptive power of the God who created them—and who created us. By embracing the study of dinosaurs within a biblical worldview, we can foster deeper faith, clearer understanding, and greater appreciation of the incredible God we serve.

Answering Common Questions

Could dinosaurs be alive today?

This question fuels the imagination of many. Some cryptozoologists and adventurers have proposed the existence of creatures resembling dinosaurs in remote, unexplored regions of the world, such as the Congo basin’s mythical Mokele-Mbembe. However, despite the fascination, no verifiable scientific evidence has confirmed the existence of living dinosaurs in modern times.

That said, the world remains filled with incredible reptiles, large sea creatures, and ancient-looking beasts that continue to spark curiosity. Creatures like the Komodo dragon or deep-sea dwellers remind us that we’ve only explored a fraction of God’s creation. These wonders should stir us to worship a God whose creation is still full of mystery and discovery—even in a fallen world.

Why are dinosaurs not a major theme in the Bible?

The Bible is not an exhaustive account of natural history but is primarily a theological narrative, revealing God’s character, His plan of redemption, and our role in His story. That’s why certain creatures like the behemoth, leviathan, and dragons are mentioned in relation to God’s power, judgment, or the wonders of His creation, rather than for scientific cataloging.

Where dinosaurs—or creatures that resemble them—are described, they serve a purpose: to point us to God’s majesty, to highlight the awe He is due, or to symbolize strength and chaos. For example, in Job, God uses the behemoth and leviathan to remind Job of human limitation and divine sovereignty. In that light, dinosaurs are not absent from the biblical story—they simply aren’t the focus.

What about the idea that dinosaurs evolved into birds?

Many modern scientists argue that dinosaurs evolved into birds, based on similarities in skeletal structure and certain fossil impressions. However, from a biblical perspective, this theory rests on an evolutionary framework that contradicts Scripture.

The Bible clearly states that God created every kind of animal on specific days of creation (Genesis 1), and each reproduces according to its kind. The notion that land-dwelling dinosaurs evolved into flying birds blurs these created kinds and lacks definitive fossil support. In fact, many fossils classified as “early birds” have been found in the same geological layers as classic dinosaurs, suggesting they lived at the same time, not sequentially.

Furthermore, birds possess a range of unique features—such as complex feathers, hollow bones, and highly specialized respiratory systems—that appear fully formed in the fossil record. These traits don’t gradually emerge as evolutionary theory would suggest. Instead, they affirm the biblical idea of intentional, fully formed creation.

So, while we respect the study of science, we also affirm that any theory must be interpreted through the lens of God’s unchanging Word. In this case, the biblical account offers a more consistent explanation: God created both dinosaurs and birds separately, each to reflect His glory.

Conclusion: Dinosaurs in the Light of Scripture

So, what does the Bible say about dinosaurs? Plenty. While not using modern terminology, Scripture provides compelling descriptions of ancient beasts, created by God, living alongside man, and affected by the Fall and the Flood.

When we interpret fossils, extinction, and dinosaur discoveries through the lens of biblical truth, we find coherence, not conflict. The existence of dinosaurs confirms, rather than contradicts, the Genesis account and God’s power as Creator.
