Menacing Mosquitos

What did the mosquitoes eat before the fall of man if everything was good? Mosquitos are one of the deadliest insects responsible for over one million deaths  every year due to their bites. Did mosquitoes bite in the Garden of Eden? Most likely not, as God originally described His creation as “very good”.  Disease and suffering would not yet exist before Adam and Eve brought the curse of sin and death upon all mankind.  So then what did the mosquitoes eat back then?

Most people aren’t aware that it is only female mosquitoes that feed on blood; males eat nectar from flowers. The female needs the hemoglobin found in blood to make her eggs. Interestingly, hemoglobin is also produced by some plants. Before the fall, it is possible that female mosquitoes fed on the hemoglobin produced by plants.

One day, when Jesus returns, mosquito bites will no longer harm us. Until that moment, let every mosquito bite remind you of how sin entered the world, as all creation groans waiting for the time of Jesus’ return.
