[00:00:24] magic is that right Danny not in the Christian world no no okay because then

[00:00:30] people start freaking out about Harry Potter and said you’re gonna like pull out your wand right that’s oh yeah

[00:00:35] usually illusions in the in the Christian world but yeah sleight of hand magic conjuring but conjuring that

[00:00:42] sounds a little mysterious yeah well so Danny ray is in studio and also Marc

[00:00:48] Salazar he’s been on several times now and we he was on with Marc Mike Shepherd NFL coach Mike Shepherd

[00:00:55] not too long ago and he’s actually doing some filming for us this is a jack-of-all-trades here so mark thanks

[00:01:13] special that’s fantastic so very exciting I’ve never had an illusionist as I guess I’ve had all kinds of guess

[00:01:19] but I’ve never had an illusionist so not too long ago we actually had a guy on

[00:01:24] the program he it has the world record for the fastest gun disarm his name is

[00:01:29] Victor Marx he can take a gun out of your hand in under a quarter second yeah and he actually disarmed me in the

[00:01:35] studio I brought a gun into the studio and Wow yeah it was scary but anyway I know I brought some matches in studio

[00:01:42] here I’m a little nervous about that if we’re gonna do something with that but in the meantime why don’t why don’t we start off given our guests if you’re

[00:01:48] listening I’m sorry this isn’t going to translate real well because but maybe this will encourage you to check us out

[00:02:54] show it to the camera let’s show it yeah that’s yeah that should I won’t look no peeking okay so I’m showing it to the camera

[00:03:19] oh my gosh what no guys if you can’t see that

[00:03:29] why in the world I am blown away right now

[00:03:35] that’s unbelievable I’m like completely astonished right now I think this was magic I gotta tell you

[00:03:44] for those who are listening what does happen okay I pulled a card out of the deck he did not know what card it was it

[00:03:51] was the eight of Spades and then he lit a match and then he put the match out

[00:03:56] with his fingers and on his fingertips it one finger tip had eight and one had

[00:04:03] a spade that that was it crazy his imagination really just blew my mind

[00:04:12] away okay so I’m ready to listen to whatever you have to say about Jesus you got to tell

[00:04:17] me about Jesus now right okay so so uh yeah why don’t we go back to the beginning of your life Danny and you

[00:04:23] know how in the world did you get involved in this and you know what was your your upbringing like as a young man

[00:04:30] and where did you grow up in a Christian family give us give us the story yes so so I grew up here in San Diego and went

[00:04:37] to San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and I’m really did not have a relationship with God I was I

[00:04:43] went to the Catholic Church and you know so I heard messages here and there but

[00:04:49] it there was a disconnect between you know who I am and who God is and there

[00:04:54] were you know there there wasn’t a passion and my mom dad even though they went it wasn’t like they were like you

[00:05:00] you know like hardcore like followers of Jesus you’re sure it’s more about the tradition you know and so hopefully mom

[00:05:07] and dad aren’t listening right they praise 12:10 a.m. you know sue it was at

[00:05:18] 16 years old I was kind of heartbroken with a relationship and I met a man

[00:05:24] Travis Harkin he started a church out in I’m in Dallas and he just really

[00:05:31] challenged me to through things and I was like what do you mean pray about things and there was another man who was running an

[00:05:37] organization called his name was Dan Monteverde and he invited me to be a

[00:05:42] part of what they were doing with Youth for Christ and so eventually Travis

[00:05:48] ended up bringing me to Miles Macpherson’s Church who has a the rock but he was at he was youth pastor oh

[00:05:55] yeah at Horizon Creek miles was my youth pastor oh really yeah yeah so so yeah I started

[00:06:03] going every week Wednesday night and you know hearing I’m hearing the gospel and watching now were you in the gym or were

[00:06:09] you in the gym in the gym okay yeah but I started after I became a Christian at 17 and 1991 gave my life to Christ

[00:06:17] there was a Sunday morning you know program that they were running and so I started doing both and but yes so Myles

[00:06:24] you know just hearing every week you know the gospel and having people respond to that I remember you know god

[00:06:30] that’s great you know it’s not for me I’ll come another week though you know and yeah um but eventually because of the cute girls or anything that was

[00:06:36] there there might have been a that’s hope but yeah so in April of 91 you know

[00:06:45] I I really felt like it was no longer just like you know an invitation for

[00:06:50] everybody else but I felt like God was saying directly yeah are you going to follow you know and I I’m looking around

[00:06:57] like no not-not-not what about these guys no what about you you know so what

[00:07:02] was it what was it that was like holding you back like through that process what what were you holding onto that was

[00:07:08] keeping you from making that decision I I think just by the way God’s design me

[00:07:14] like I’m all in on things you know if I’m gonna study something I’m gonna go as deep as I possibly can you’re gonna

[00:07:21] love somebody I’m gonna love them with all my heart you know and so this idea of you know like I I had been to church

[00:07:27] enough to know like you could have this part-time relationship and I was good with that but miles wasn’t talking about

[00:07:34] part-time no no that definitely was his message yeah and it wasn’t sugar-coated

[00:07:39] it wasn’t yeah I mean you know you know it wasn’t like you know follow Jesus everything’s gonna be great you know

[00:07:45] you’ll never have problems yeah is you know he’s like if you follow you need to

[00:07:51] be all land yeah very thick and thin yeah and I remember one illustration gave like with

[00:07:57] the the monkey you know what I got ya yeah with the coconut yeah share that

[00:08:06] with us so our listeners can hear because that’s a great illustration yeah so the illustrations you know that I remember hearing for the first time in

[00:08:12] high school I’ve heard it since but uh is that the these monkeys you know they would trapped a monkey by taking a

[00:08:18] coconut take a chain tie it around a tree and put candy inside of the coconut

[00:08:24] and the monkey could reach inside grab the candy and it would basically be like

[00:08:30] a handcuff on him you know he can’t pull his fist was so thick full of candy that rot get his hand at all he had to do is

[00:08:37] let go of the candy and he’d be free but he wasn’t willing to let go yeah there’s a lot of things at that time that I felt

[00:08:43] like you know we’re trapping me that I was holding on to that God was going you need to let go these things to follow me

[00:08:49] and I think some of that was you know like even the the sleight of hand like I was there very involved from you know

[00:08:56] the time I was ten years old I started working on sleight of hand by 15 I got a job at The Gathering which is in

[00:09:02] Hillcrest and it’s still there Dan Thomas is the owner I’ve met with him a

[00:09:08] number of times and they have like regular nights where you you get to perform again so I became a regular

[00:09:14] there for three years through high school yeah that led to doing all kinds of stuff local businesses and then led

[00:09:21] to doing other restaurant work and so I did that for seven years and seminary kind of put it on the back burner but

[00:09:27] did it through high school in college yeah and so so the age at which you accepted Christ seventeen seventeen

[00:09:35] years old okay I started hearing the gospel in a very direct way at 16 yeah but at 17 gave my life decided decided

[00:09:41] to let go of the the candy and the coconut yeah okay my guest today is

[00:09:46] Danny ray he’s an illusionist and very well known all over the place does amazing uh just right in front of my

[00:09:53] face I just I’m blown away what just happened but but anyway and we’re and also with Mark Salazar of FC

[00:13:51] just to show the gospel so everything about that event is geared towards just the the final part of sharing the gospel

[00:13:57] we want to share the gospel with with those who have not had an opportunity to to hear it or maybe they’ve heard before

[00:14:03] and this is the time that God’s gonna call them themselves oh yeah absolutely and I think that’s what’s so cool is that God is patient with us you know now

[00:14:10] you you started hearing the truth at 16 but you are you you were like you were saying we were holding on to the the

[00:14:15] rice for the candy and the coconut and a lot of people I’m sure even some people listening today you know they’re

[00:14:21] thinking hey should I make this decision to follow Christ yeah they keep running into Christ but they’re not they’re not

[00:14:26] ready to let go of those things and so would you say that the decision you made finally to to let go because that’s kind

[00:14:34] of scary right today that step what would you say to somebody who’s on the edge there who’s thinking of himself I

[00:14:40] don’t want to let go I don’t want to let go and they just don’t want to take that step my my thing that way is got it like

[00:14:47] he said got his patient with us you know is is continue to seek people out what

[00:14:53] what what is drawing you to Christ you know I think this idea like you’ve got to do it right now

[00:14:58] is God knows the exact time that you’re gonna give your your life to him you

[00:15:03] know he wants you to do it now in your your life the trajectory of your life

[00:15:09] will begin to change if you were to do it right but I would say continue to seek wise counsel um those people that

[00:15:16] you trust in your life asked them what is it about Jesus that draws you to them

[00:15:22] that you why do you live for him how is your life been different and I think God will give you the answers that you’re

[00:15:29] seeking that way and and sometimes it’s just you’re you’re being stubborn hearted and you just need to get on your

[00:15:35] knees and just repent and say God I’m ready to give my life now yeah I thought

[00:15:41] it was interesting what you just said you said you’re the trajectory of your life will begin to change and it’s

[00:15:46] interesting you said ever since I was 10 years old I was working on sleight of hand I was working on this stuff you were captivated by that and when did you

[00:15:54] begin to when did you decide that hey you know what I can use this as a tool to be able to share the love of God with

[00:16:01] other people when did that start to formulate in your mind as you were getting older and accept yes so it 18 I

[00:16:08] I was performing meta meta man who had

[00:16:13] an incredible opportunity for me where he he was a magician world renowned and

[00:16:18] he wanted to take me on the road with them he was going to Las Vegas he was on tour going to Vegas Caesar’s Palace up

[00:16:24] in Tahoe over to New York then over to Europe wow you know 18 years old 18 years old and he’s like I’ll show you

[00:16:32] the ropes I’ll teach you everything you know all that time how did you meet him I would I had an event I was performing

[00:16:38] at he you know happened and he was there okay and so I was you know like over the

[00:16:43] top like this is the day you know and you know one of the habits that I got into early as I follow our Christ is you

[00:16:50] know just getting up like Jesus did before while I was still dark and so um got up the next day started

[00:16:56] pray about it and felt like God was telling me don’t do this then and I didn’t have the answers at that time I

[00:17:02] didn’t I didn’t know anything else except to pray listen for God’s voice and felt like he’s telling me no so I

[00:17:08] called this guy back up I had two weeks to make the decision so I prayed a little bit more but yeah felt like God was continuing to shut

[00:17:14] that door down and so call them said no and then didn’t really think about it

[00:17:19] much got involved in youth ministry at 19 years old and volunteered for 5 years

[00:17:24] and then was youth pastor for five years at Yucaipa Christian Church up in that Inland Empire and eight 28 years old so

[00:17:34] a decade later I’m at the gym on the stair on a machine yeah on a machine

[00:17:40] sound so much better and there’s a

[00:17:46] magazine some magazine I don’t read it was like Newsweek or time or you know but it’s on on this machine and I start

[00:17:53] flipping through it I see this guy I met 10 years ago yeah the one take me on the road and he’s up for all of these

[00:17:58] fraudulent charges for taking college students on the road he would rack up

[00:18:03] their visas and then when they ran out of money he would leave them stranded around oh my gosh yeah and so it was

[00:18:10] just like one of those sayings that God it was like revealing to me is going remember how you wanted to do this you

[00:18:16] know and God certainly don’t have to do this yeah but right now I’m preparing you to do something that’s going to

[00:18:22] combine your gifts and your calling and at 29 years old we launched yeah

[00:18:28] and we could talk about that more but but that uh that for me that was like

[00:18:33] one of those sayings of listening to God’s voice and how different my life

[00:18:38] would have been had I not it’s not that I couldn’t have been forgiven or you

[00:18:44] know God would have you know just gone okay I’m not gonna use yeah but there

[00:18:49] there would have been difficult consequences choices I’m not listening

[00:18:55] following my dream yeah that’s such a powerful message I mean because there is

[00:19:00] very often many times where we look at a situation we go god I don’t understand what’s going on right now yeah and we’re

[00:19:06] thinking to ourselves this doesn’t make any sense to me right but seize all the all the variables that we don’t necessarily see yeah that’s it

[00:19:13] that’s fantastic so so you’re you’re 18 you you turn you turn this opportunity

[00:19:19] down yeah and are you still practicing illusions and so forth yes so I was

[00:19:25] working at Bobby McGee’s it’s since closed down but I was working at Bobby the McGee’s up in San Bernardino area

[00:19:33] and so I did that through college a couple different restaurants but that

[00:19:38] was one of them and then that led you know to more local shows and I think I

[00:19:43] did 13 shows at the University of Redlands where I was studying speech pathology and it was later that I would

[00:19:50] get involved in ministry you know study theá– now yeah so you eighteen you were

[00:19:57] you were doing that and when so you joined seminary you said yes when I graduated I had looked at you know

[00:20:04] continuing in the area of speech pathology or going into ministry

[00:20:10] full-time and I always had a men’s retreat and just praying God what do you

[00:20:16] want me to do and I I’m reading the word and you know it came to a verse where

[00:20:21] just says preach the word right and so for weeks like god what do you want me to preach them yeah I know but what do

[00:20:28] you want me to do preach the word you know in sue of all the things I filter

[00:20:33] my life thro to this day yeah that still it is is this gonna give me the maximum

[00:20:40] opportunity to be able to share God’s Word share his love with others if not it’s not that I’ll say no but if there’s

[00:20:47] a another opportunity that would give me a better opportunity to share God’s Word on that’s how his heart that’s what I

[00:20:53] would that’s the focus that’s the folk and and so that’s interesting so as you’re going through this you know as

[00:20:59] you’re seeking God’s will and you’re trying to figure out okay Lord what is it you want me to do with my life is the

[00:21:05] idea of using your talents your skills as an illusionist is that coming into mind at all or no no not at that time

[00:21:12] later on it did but at that time I was i I was involved in youth ministry for

[00:21:18] three years at that point by the time I was you know graduating college in loved and really felt like I’d taken an

[00:21:26] internship that last year and really felt like God was moving me into youth ministry but I also really loved speech

[00:21:33] pathology and I you know I wanted to help kids that way yeah I was good at it

[00:21:40] you know and so but in that field you really have to get your masters so I had applied for my masters in that area and

[00:21:49] then on the other side had applied and for seminary and got accepted fuller with you okay wow what a road we travel

[00:21:57] huh has been followed the Lord so my guest today is illusionist Danny Ray he is incredibly talented illusionist and

[00:22:05] he’s here in town with FCA working with the FCA Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Marc Salazar to share the gospel

[00:26:02] Salazar and Danny so you were talking about how you weren’t even considering

[00:26:07] using illusions really in in your effort to share the gospel at that point in time and I was going to ask you so you

[00:26:15] were a youth pastor you were in a speech pathology and when did you begin to get this I you know feel leanings from the

[00:26:22] Lord that maybe this was something you could do yeah so early on I had seen Christian magicians and just because I

[00:26:30] like I have a passion for sleight of hand it was terrible sleight of hand and terrible

[00:26:36] magic it was just super cheesy I have since come to terms like everybody has different criteria and that’s all right

[00:26:43] but for excellence but I realize like

[00:26:49] pastors could go pick up sound like kind of a snobby magician here snobby illusionist no I just had you know like

[00:26:58] I had worked on it for seven years before I became a Christian then afterwards when God’s like no I want you

[00:27:03] to continue to use this you know yes he’s I just wanted to continue to elevate that art and work on it but

[00:27:10] because I had seen Christian magicians I I just separated them you know oh I’ll

[00:27:16] never bring those two together and I’m so funny and so I was like magics over here you

[00:27:21] know Christianity’s over here and left those in two different worlds sure and then other people like what some people

[00:27:28] say about Christian movies yeah no we’re not knocking Christian movies though there’s some really great ones out there

[00:27:33] and they’re getting better and better so but yeah some people say hey look the quality is just below what you would

[00:27:40] expect from ya you know something that was produced by you know Steven Spielberg or somebody right right yeah

[00:27:45] and so I I kept those in different worlds and then other people they

[00:27:51] started to see you know like they did see me do magic over here and then hear me you know give a message in so a

[00:27:57] couple people challenged me to bring those together yeah but ultimately I was reading through Romans chapter 11 verse

[00:28:04] 29 where it says God’s gifts and his calling or irrevocable and it was the first time I saw those two like in its

[00:28:11] trickable from huh you know it so I had my calling over here my gifting over here I really had to pray through and

[00:28:17] seek God’s heart on like is this a gift you’ve given to me in read stories like basil L which you know he helped build

[00:28:25] Ark of the Covenant which even today that’s pretty good right to put on your resume yeah I’ve got the Covenant what

[00:28:31] have you done lately so but it said of

[00:28:36] get on that guy gave him gifts with his hands and with leadership you know and so so I started to see that the

[00:28:44] can really be a gift not just like a talent that I’ve honed but a desire that he’s put within me yeah

[00:28:50] did I kid yes it’s a talent that I could you know continue to master and develop but it’s a gift he’s given to to be able

[00:28:59] to be a blessing to others and to bring joy to ya okay and so so as you’re

[00:29:04] moving in that direction I mean what’s going through your mind as far as you know are you thinking how am I gonna

[00:29:12] make a living are these kinds of questions coming into your mind as yeah but because I know for a lot of people I know I read a little bit about your your

[00:29:19] story on your website and in it you mentioned how it was it was a bit of a

[00:29:25] step of faith to be able to say okay Lord this is what I’m gonna do here and I’m trusting you and I think a lot of

[00:29:31] people feel that way I’ve got missionary friends who’ve decided to quit their their job here in America and moved to Africa and they’re counting on the Lord

[00:29:38] to get to get them through that and to help them and so yeah share with us a little bit about some of the struggles

[00:29:44] you went through and making that decision and so forth yeah wish I could say it’s logical but sometimes following

[00:29:49] God you know it’s like you feel like so for two years we prayed about it saw

[00:29:54] twice counts you and my wife you and your wife and my wife Kimberly now do you have any kids I do I have three kids

[00:30:00] I’m Ryan Spencer and Caroline so Brian’s my oldest he’s 18 Spencer 16 and then

[00:30:07] Caroline’s now what now when you were making this decision about whether or not you were gonna you were gonna do

[00:30:13] this were where did you have kids at the time yes am I so we started in 2003 so

[00:30:20] my boys were 2 and 4 oh so that that I mean that makes it even more scary yeah so it’s it was a

[00:30:26] big decision it was definitely scary so 2 years we pray about it yeah but we really feel like God’s going it’s it’s

[00:30:33] time to launch this yeah and so my wife her grandmother had passed away left us

[00:30:40] enough money to basically at that time live for about six months and have

[00:30:46] several thousand to like start you know maybe seven to ten thousand to kind of

[00:30:52] start the business for like business cards website fliers we’d worked with

[00:30:57] you specialties to to go to their national youth workers three different cities basically they

[00:31:04] gave us a room at a late-night event that they’re like whoever you could get

[00:31:10] there you know and so we went around every person ham doing a show in everyone you know like we were so like

[00:31:18] that it was sink or swim you know yeah if at the end of that six months we

[00:31:24] didn’t with we didn’t have any money coming in if we did have any shows you know then there was no other source of

[00:31:31] income yeah and yeah so that was 2003 we did I’m just curious but the use Specialties thing when you

[00:31:37] were like by God’s grace it was packed in all three so that must have been

[00:31:43] encouraging to you that you were going hey there definitely the Lord and I’m sure like the people who booked us which

[00:31:50] were still friends with some of those guys yeah you’ll come out for that much like that’s less than a plane ticket I

[00:31:57] had no idea what to charge like we were happy with anything as Saudis like we’ll

[00:32:03] bring you out you know we quickly brought up the price but initially I am

[00:32:08] embarrassed to say but I think we’re charging like between two and four hundred dollars yeah like it was just like you got two hundred dollars let’s

[00:32:15] do it yeah I’ll fly out to New York just to be an audience do this yeah to support the

[00:32:21] family you know it didn’t make sense oh of course not there’s no way yeah but by

[00:32:28] God’s grace at December we we paid all of our bills off of just events that

[00:32:33] were coming Wow all of the money it drained out of that accounts at that point and so we’d paid our bills for the

[00:32:40] first time in 2003 December 2003 definitely by God’s grace we’re still

[00:32:45] afloat yeah haven’t had day go get a job at Starbucks yeah yeah that’s great

[00:32:51] that’s great praise the Lord well what I’m really curious to hear from you two is how you how you transition from doing

[00:33:00] these card tricks where you you you light a match on fire and then and then put uh you know I couldn’t get anything

[00:33:06] to form on my fingertips I don’t care what it was my job much less I don’t even know how you did

[00:33:13] that but anyway so so I’m curious to know how when you’re speaking to a group of young people or adults or whoever how

[00:33:20] you transition from sharing about illusions into the gospel so we’re coming up on a break here but my guest

[00:36:56] Danny Ray as well as Marc Salazar Danny Ray is one of the foremost illusionists

[00:37:01] in the world he’s performed in all 50 states over 2000 shows he actually was a stunt double for a History Channel show

[00:37:08] on Houdini and I just was talking to him about this over our break and just

[00:37:15] incredible you’re gonna be performing Danny in the Magic Castle tell our listeners what the Magic Castle is yes

[00:37:21] so the Magic Castle is the most exclusive club in the world for magicians like literally there’s

[00:37:26] magicians from all over the world they want to perform there and do perform there on a regular basis and so every

[00:37:33] week the magicians change so I’ve had the privilege for the last 12 years to

[00:37:38] be able to perform there you could only you know perform there twice here and so you know once you’re if I’m available

[00:37:44] I’ve done it for the most part oh that’s amazing that’s so incredible

[00:37:51] and so how do people respond to you when they find out that you’re also a Bible

[00:37:56] believing Christian who loves Jesus does that impact their view of you as far as an illusionist or are they just like you

[00:38:02] know so at the magic you know just like in any corporate or

[00:38:08] secular setting is you know it’s about the relationships and so I find when you

[00:38:13] know a friend of mine he he was going through a divorce he knows you know I’m a follower of Christ he’s like you know

[00:38:19] what do I do what’s you know what’s going on how does God view me you know and so he’s not a

[00:38:24] follower but you know when you’re when you’re in crisis you you have questions so be able to walk with people through

[00:38:30] through those things yeah so so yeah a number of people you know notice by my

[00:38:36] demeanor by my conversations that that that I’m not you know living in the same

[00:38:42] world they are you know so that leads to further conversation so so yeah I try to I’m just find out what people’s stories

[00:38:49] are find out were than intersection between you know faith in Christ and

[00:38:55] yeah and I mean that’s really neat because you know what I tell my students

[00:39:01] in school as you’re as God is putting desires on your heart for what you want to do with your life yeah really we’re a missionary wherever we go

[00:39:07] it doesn’t matter who we work for or where we’re at if I’m if I’m working at Geico then I’m a missionary at Geico and

[00:39:14] and so that’s really so neat how God has allowed you to use these skills these gifts to really go places where a lot of

[00:39:22] Christians don’t necessarily get to go yeah no it’s definitely you to give you

[00:39:28] an idea of like how exclusive this is is like every month there’s about 500

[00:39:34] people that audition to perform at whoa I’m soo in they could only accept in any

[00:39:41] given month like about 20 you know and so it’s constant you know people trying

[00:39:47] to get in and it’s it’s an amazing place but it’s when you’re when you perform

[00:39:54] there you’re able to enter into conversation with people that you would you would never be able to if you were

[00:40:01] just amateur I don’t there would be some I’m sure but it gives you a different

[00:40:07] angle to be able to time absolutely absolutely and and that’s what the Lord is doing he’s moving in all circles

[00:40:13] because he has all people it doesn’t matter who you are right whether you’re whether you’re ultra successful whether you’re

[00:40:18] not doesn’t in the world’s eyes what God cares about is a relationship like you said wherever you’re at that’s so cool

[00:40:26] so you were telling me that you’re that you used to do an underwater trick where you actually had to break out basically

[00:40:32] so so I wanted you to share with our listeners because this is kind of personal it’s kind of neat to hear the

[00:40:38] background behind your life you know and some of the stuff that’s going on yes so I’ve done a number of it escapes over the years and I’ve been able to work

[00:40:44] with the premier escape ologist in the world who’s you know he’s done all of

[00:40:50] Criss Angel’s escaped he’s worked with David Copperfield with Penn & Teller with with David Blaine with all yeah

[00:40:59] just a ton of guys and he lives about a mile from and he lives in a dark I think I live in a dark world he’s like really

[00:41:05] underground you know and what does that mean to like like a cult or something no

[00:41:13] no like he’s constantly trying to figure out in that scape world like what like I

[00:41:19] know for a fact there’s different locks that are out there that are used like on

[00:41:24] coke machines that he’s figured out how to pick and under a second that if the

[00:41:30] lock company knew they would immediately you know put a recall on these you know

[00:41:36] and he’s shown me you know different things that are out there that you can he trains like CIA

[00:41:43] Wow it’s it’s crazy like when I go over to his house you know I just never know

[00:41:48] what’s gonna happen like literally I’ve gone over people are in his trunk I’m like what’s going on

[00:41:55] he’s like I’m teaching people how to escape if you’re ever in a trunk you know do you know how to escape well that’s somebody you want to be your

[00:42:01] friend not your enemy right but yes so I’ve done a couple of different Hugh

[00:42:08] Dini asked water it’s underwater it escapes one being his I’ve done the

[00:42:14] Chinese water torture escape but the the milk-can escape is the one I’ve I’ve done the most of and I had a friend of

[00:42:21] mine Jeremiah Cox that traveled with me for a decade and you know he he did it and we wanted to continue after he left

[00:42:30] kind of our full-time ministry yeah and so I had my wife do it one time this once

[00:42:36] and she tried to kill me oh you’ve got a good life insurance policy I’m sure so

[00:42:45] activated that moment so yes she this

[00:42:51] was a I’m trying to think of what event this what I’m not sure this is about four years ago and yes so I’m underwater

[00:42:59] um so I have no idea what’s about to happen but I’m underwater she’s locking

[00:43:05] me in and went when I go underwater like the water flows out it would be on to

[00:43:12] the stage but we build basically like a well or a pool you know whoo she she

[00:43:18] didn’t realize it but she had kicked open the well and so the water is just flowing all over that stage and into the

[00:43:25] electrical unit you know like oh my god is is this during a show during a show

[00:43:31] yeah does the audience know something went wrong the audience doesn’t know but

[00:43:37] the the stage manager the director everybody when I got out of the water

[00:43:44] they’re yelling at me I have no idea what they’re upset about and they’re like you couldn’t you know been killed

[00:43:49] in there I’m like what what happened they’re like water went everywhere why didn’t you have like this well yeah yeah

[00:43:55] like you said you would I’m like we did but I didn’t realize when we watch the video my wife’s foot just like kicked it

[00:44:01] right open you know and water flowed out but she was so focused on locking me in yeah yeah she doesn’t notice water’s

[00:44:08] going all over the stage so you don’t do that trick anymore I don’t um yeah you

[00:44:15] have to be able to trust somebody with your life probably had to go to

[00:44:23] counseling over that hey we all we all need counseling for one reason or

[00:48:13] your message to these kids and to others that you’re sharing the gospel with so I think it’s like what you said earlier

[00:48:18] with all of us being missionaries regardless of where we are is we have to

[00:48:23] look for what is that bridge into their world you know infer for me thankfully like

[00:48:29] the you know magic slight sleight of hand is on the forefront of culture right now and it has been for over a

[00:48:35] decade or so yeah so that definitely paves the way for me when I go in in

[00:48:42] especially sleight of hand like it’s it’s huge right now that in not nothing

[00:48:47] against stage magic but you know doing stuff with boxes and stuff people you know a lot of that has been given away

[00:48:53] not that some sleight of hand hasn’t but people definitely love you know stuff

[00:48:59] that’s yeah in their hands happening right in front of them yeah I mean what I thought was incredible is that you came in here I mean there’s no props or

[00:49:06] anything I mean we’ve got a radio radio studio here given you brought the mess I know I thought the matches and you

[00:49:12] didn’t even know I was gonna bring matches no and I’m like hey you’re like okay we’ll do something with matches I

[00:49:18] mean that’s like incredible improv right there you whip out some cards and light a match on fire and then just do this

[00:49:24] incredible trick so yeah that is just amazing yeah so when you when you have I work you know maybe 70% with students

[00:49:32] maybe 20% or like family events or men’s retreat women’s retreat and 10% like you

[00:49:40] know corporate or the castle yeah you know something else you know but so I worked with a you know a lot of students

[00:49:46] and so I build the bridge by doing you know sleight of hand and then this is

[00:49:52] one of the things that I’ve tried to to do is I try to make it feel like they’re

[00:49:57] bringing about the message so an example of that would be is I have somebody

[00:50:02] reach in and they happen to take the cards I’m like oh wait you took the King of Hearts and I act like it throws me

[00:50:09] off them we’re gonna have to do something different oh well here’s the

[00:50:14] thing is the King of Hearts it’s my favorite card anytime somebody takes that card I have to tell him about the

[00:50:20] true so here let me show you something with the King of Hearts here take a different card here sign your name on

[00:50:25] that I’ll do something with a king and with your signature and then I go in and I share the gospel through that piece

[00:50:31] you know and so this is this is the the tricky thing with a we was sharing the

[00:50:38] gospel is I want to make sure that that it’s done in such a way that they

[00:50:44] they’re not disengaged you know it’s not like what what I saw early on that I

[00:50:49] didn’t want to do is comedians that would make you know students laugh for an hour and then at the end of it they

[00:50:55] would say well let me let me break character let me stop and then now let

[00:51:00] me tell you I’m a follower of Christ that may be serious for yeah yeah it felt it was genuine I didn’t feel like

[00:51:07] it was you know like they were faking it I felt like it it was separate from the show in when I told you about that verse

[00:51:14] earlier about the gifts gifts and calling being you know inseparable yeah

[00:51:19] I wanted to figure out how can I make this blend together so it’s seamless you

[00:51:25] know we’re one moment I’m doing sleight of hand it’s just fun the next moment I’m sharing God’s Word

[00:51:30] so here are some of my convictions with sharing God’s Word yeah with sleight of hand he’s I take what I believe to be my

[00:51:39] best best light of he in pieces that have got the best reaction

[00:51:45] yeah and I put the best message I possibly can so the the thought being is the the hardcore skeptic and not I don’t

[00:51:53] want to hear this man but they’re so intrigued by the magic side of it that they can’t help but hear the match mmm

[00:52:00] you know so I’m not it’s not that I’m trying to bait and switch but I really want them to go man this is the best

[00:52:05] magic I’ve ever seen and I am hearing a message that that I’m willing to hear

[00:52:12] because he’s put in the time – yeah – to really do something with that that’s really cool so yeah and how does that

[00:52:18] translate into you know other people who aren’t necessarily illusionists but how does that translate into just sharing

[00:52:25] the gospel in general as you’re what you’re saying yeah is I think you have to take however God’s wired you what are

[00:52:32] the things that God’s put on your heart and how can you use those you know to

[00:52:38] share the gospel so for for example one of the things that led me to this understanding God’s given us these

[00:52:45] desires is I was at Forrest home which you know up in the Big Bear area yeah the they were going to build a home

[00:52:53] for some people down and Mex so they had the wood out and they were gonna build it on Thursday but you know Monday then

[00:53:00] well every day I had walked by it I’d hear guys like why can’t we just build two houses why can’t we do it now and I

[00:53:07] was like I know it’s a good thing so I would build it because it’s a good thing to do sure but it’s not my thing

[00:53:14] you know but for these guys it was important them and they wanted to do it so I would say for those guys like

[00:53:21] that’s a perfect way side by side building things to be able to share the gospel was yeah like I had a friend of

[00:53:29] mine he built a catapult in his front yard for an event we were doing and using a 24 foot you know something you

[00:53:38] know some interesting people and so he’s building this in his front yard every

[00:53:45] guy in the world came by his front yard like and what he building what’s going on over here why did he ever catapult in

[00:53:51] your front yard and it gave him the opportunity he loves to build to share the gospel with these guys that’s cool this is what

[00:53:58] I’m do we’re doing a van at our church you know we’re gonna talk about this you know ensue

[00:54:04] what you know if you play basketball if you play music if whatever you do there

[00:54:09] there’s a way you can share the gospel that’s so cool yeah yeah and so I think

[00:54:14] taking time to pray through that and see how God will open up yeah and you know I

[00:54:20] it’s interesting because you do allusions and a lot of people would say and we don’t have much time left here

[00:54:25] where we got two minutes so I’ll try to make this quick but I had a question in my mind which was yeah you do illusions

[00:54:30] but Christ didn’t do illusions he did real miracles and how does that relate you know some

[00:54:36] people might say oh yeah well Christianity is an illusion just like the illusions you do is there any

[00:54:42] connection there do you draw any yes so Andre Cole who’s another Christian magician he wrote a lot about this yeah

[00:54:49] this idea that Jesus was a magician yeah all the best magicians in the world they have airplanes and semi trucks that

[00:54:57] they’re carrying these giant illusions around there would be some sort of evidence if Jesus had all this equipment

[00:55:04] that he had to carry around to walk on water yeah that is a massive projection you know like people who think like Oh

[00:55:10] Criss Angel just woke up one morning and they happen to catch him on film floating across America yeah come on he

[00:55:17] has a huge budget you know in people work for hours and hours to think up

[00:55:22] these ideas he has a lot of equipment to pull these things off so this idea that you know Jesus was just an a magician is

[00:55:31] is just a farce you know there’s no way and the idea that Christianity is an

[00:55:36] illusion go to your website and look at all the evidence yeah you know that you would have to create out of nowhere to

[00:55:44] make these things come true like there’s no way when you look at the the prophecies given in Scripture yeah and

[00:55:53] and you would know a ton about that available sure sure yeah well I just
