Being Youth Pastors – Jon Ulloa and Arnold Camacho
On this episode of The Educate for Life Podcast, we dive into the heart of youth ministry and why it remains one of the most important callings in Christian education today. As young people wrestle with questions about identity, purpose, faith and science, and how to build a biblical worldview in a culture full of competing messages, youth pastors stand on the front lines helping students anchor their lives in God’s truth. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or church volunteer, this conversation will strengthen your vision for discipling the next generation.
Inside the Calling: The Journey of Two Youth Pastors
Jon Ulloa from Foothills Church and Arnold Camacho from Shadow Mountain Community Church join Kevin to share their personal ministry stories, the challenges they’ve faced, and the deep joy they’ve found in seeing students grow in Christ. Each pastor brings years of hands-on experience helping teens navigate spiritual questions, academic pressures, and the constant noise of modern digital culture.
In this heartfelt conversation, Jon and Arnold reflect on how God drew them into youth ministry, the mentors who shaped their calling, and the ongoing balance between teaching apologetics, cultivating fun and community, and developing deep spiritual roots. They also share practical insight into the unique discipleship challenges Christian parents and educators face today—especially when it comes to forming students in a biblical worldview while engaging a world shaped by secular messages.
Their stories highlight something every Christian family can relate to: God equips ordinary people for extraordinary ministry when they walk in obedience. Their testimony offers hope, encouragement, and a reminder that investing in young people’s spiritual growth is one of the most powerful ways we advance God’s Kingdom.

Jon Ulloa: “One of the interns began to mentor me, and as I grew, I realized how much I loved seeing God use my life. That’s what led me into youth ministry.”
Arnold Camacho: “I felt unqualified, but God reminded me that He equips the called. Once I embraced that, I could step forward with confidence.”

[00:00:57] there at the foothills church and then Arnold is with shadow mountain and shadow mountain is also has a high
[00:01:03] school Christian high school which I teach at and so it’s a blessing to work alongside Arnold helping reach kids and
[00:01:11] his website is Shadow Mountain o RG backslash high school so if you want to
[00:01:16] check out what they’re doing you can do that but guys I wanted to start off the show today because you know my hope is to encourage other youth pastors out
[00:01:23] there who might be struggling in ministry or just looking for advice and guidance and it’s nice to hear what
[00:01:29] other people are going through I know that being a youth pastor is a busy job and so you don’t always get to get out and hear what other people are doing or
[00:01:36] kind of here’s some of the insight that they have so I wanted to kind of give people an opportunity to hear from some
[00:01:42] guys that have been in the ministry for a while and are doing ministry right now so why don’t we start with you John and just share with us a little bit of
[00:01:48] background about your testimony how you got involved in youth ministry and we’ll move forward from there
[00:01:53] yeah well I have a unique opportunity to have come up through our youth ministry
[00:02:00] I was invited by a neighbor to her high school group when I was a junior in high school upon not really interested in living for
[00:02:07] God and slowly the Lord got to hold my heart and so and getting involved in that ministry one of the interns of the
[00:02:13] ministry kind of took me under his wing began to spend time with me mentored me and as I began to grow and getting to
[00:02:19] know God it began to work alongside him and help him do ministry I realized I really like this this is like it was
[00:02:26] really fun and cool feeling the Lord used me and yeah I’m serving and so when I graduated high school I talked to our
[00:02:33] than high school pastor hey I’m interested in being an intern and six months after I graduated I got hired as
[00:02:40] an intern and it’s been almost 12 years now of working in the youth ministry at
[00:02:45] foothills from that time of getting involved in growing in my capacity and
[00:02:51] responsibility to now being the high school pastor there that’s fantastic now tell us about so about and you know
[00:02:59] there’s a big issue here people always talk about numbers they’re like hey you know how many kids are in your youth group and all and that we’re focused on
[00:03:06] the spiritual you know kind of raising up of young kids it’s not a big focus on
[00:03:12] numbers but still I think it’s relevant to our discussion here because I want I know that the dynamics of a youth
[00:03:18] ministry are different depending on the size depending on the size of the church and so what might be applicable to a
[00:03:25] smaller Church isn’t always necessarily applicable to a larger Church so just for our audience how many kids
[00:03:32] approximately attend your youth group on a weekly basis so our high school group
[00:03:37] that meets every week we’re around 100 130 students that are there each Tuesday okay and then we have small groups that
[00:03:44] meet throughout the week of those high school students and a number slightly increased in that realm sure around 160
[00:03:50] 170 a week okay that’s great okay so and then Arnold tell us about tell us your
[00:03:56] story how did you get involved in youth ministry and yeah well I didn’t come to
[00:04:01] know the Lord I was a junior in high school also punk kid just kind of doing my own thing and a friend invited
[00:04:08] actually you is this a qualification for you punk kid that gets a junior year you
[00:04:13] know I think I think so and you know I was also chasing a couple girls so too
[00:04:20] Wednesday night so I was like alright I’ll be there but eventually I found the Lord and within time I kind of got the serving
[00:04:27] bug you know I just wanted to help I was so grateful for what I had found and and
[00:04:33] so I just kind of started serving here and there and and I also too I had a couple liters kind of see that in me and
[00:04:38] eventually I was invited to be a junior counselor at for fourth and fifth and
[00:04:45] sixth grade at a camp up in Big Bear and and that’s where it all began where I
[00:04:51] just started kind of getting that feel of whoa hold on a second some cool stuff going on here yeah working with these students and and
[00:04:58] then and when you say cool stuff what I mean what was it that struck you that was so cool you know for me it just one
[00:05:05] being used was huge that I God worked through you yeah he could add that I
[00:05:10] could actually have some effect in into someone else’s life yeah
[00:05:16] meant the world to me and so when that bug bit me I was like okay I need to discover this a little bit more so I
[00:05:21] kept serving I kept kind of you know helping with fourth and fifth grade and and juniors and things like that in
[00:05:27] junior high and eventually when I graduated high school in high school as a volunteer never thinking I’d go into
[00:05:34] the ministry just thought hey this is something that I like to do I’d like to do and be a part of and but eventually
[00:05:41] felt the call to go into full-time ministry and and that took about a year
[00:05:47] and another story but what but eventually leaned in yeah the Lord said leave me there that’s really cool now
[00:05:53] were you hesitant when you and I’ll ask this question to both you but Arnold will you hesitant when you you know
[00:05:59] began to consider the possibility of becoming a youth pastor what was going through your mind before I made that
[00:06:05] decision I’m not qualified yeah at all I’m not qualified I don’t have a school
[00:06:12] I I had a great high school pastor yeah it at least you know in my eyes and and
[00:06:19] God really used him to move in my life and many others I honestly believed if I could get my my friend
[00:06:25] to my youth group they would get saved that’s that’s how strongly I felt about
[00:06:30] our youth ministry in in my youth pastor so I put him up here yeah as far as what
[00:06:37] a youth pastor what a pastor looks like so as soon as I started feeling or believing that God was calling me into
[00:06:44] youth ministry I’m like there’s no way because I would just compare myself yeah and other pastors in my life and so I
[00:06:50] felt unqualified I felt like that’s not for me I’ll kind of go my other Road and
[00:06:55] do this on the side and I was very hesitant yeah and what changed your mind what eventually got you to the point where you were like you know what okay
[00:07:01] uh I moved forward even though I don’t feel qualified yeah I I think once I got to a place and took about a year yeah
[00:07:07] people counseling and also again leaders seeing gifts in me but eventually coming
[00:07:15] to that realization that you’re right you’re not qualified you don’t have what
[00:07:20] it takes fully but with me you know I will make you qualify that’s and I know once that came to that understanding I’m
[00:07:28] like alright here we go and I just kind of said I will let you lead me Lord
[00:07:33] you’re gonna have to everything from schooling and where am I gonna go and how I’m gonna pay for it and yeah all
[00:07:39] those things you’re gonna have to come up with those things cuz I don’t even know where to start yeah and that’s really I mean I think
[00:07:45] that’s the experience of a lot of people going into ministry is man I don’t I don’t feel like I’m there right you know
[00:07:50] so John yeah share with us the same same same question how were you feeling when you were asked after 12 years you’ve
[00:07:57] been serving and now they asked you hey take on this huge ministry and and get
[00:08:03] involved what what was going through your mind yeah thankfully I had you know as Arnold did leaders that saw potential
[00:08:09] me and called that out and said hey we really see this as you know a future for you and I also felt a couple distinct
[00:08:15] calls from the Lord to do it and so it made it a little bit easier feeling like I’m doing this out of obedience okay god
[00:08:22] I felt you distinctly invite me to to this calling as a career and so alright
[00:08:28] even though I don’t really feel the most confident and like I maybe am the right guy and I’m gonna walk forward and
[00:08:35] having leaders let me know hey like we see this future for you we want to groom you
[00:08:40] and help you and train you yeah to eventually get to that spot so as I grew
[00:08:47] in responsibility and took on more it wasn’t a surprise because I was told hey we want to want to help you grow in this
[00:08:53] and to get there so they weren’t just gonna leave you out go hey go for it man they were gonna support you and and kind
[00:08:59] of mentor you and disciple you along the way exactly it’s a lot of I’ve had phenomenal pastors and leaders and
[00:09:04] mentors who have invested in me and showed me here’s how you do this and what this looks like that’s great now I meant to ask you also
[00:09:11] Arnold so how many students approximately weekly are you seeing in
[00:09:16] the youth group yeah so we meet twice a week so on Wednesday nights is our small group focus so we have about 120 to 130
[00:09:24] students small similar size yeah and then on Sunday mornings will average about 172 to 190 okay fantastic well my
[00:09:31] guests today are John Ulloa and Arnold Camacho these guys are working in high school youth ministry

[00:12:53] interesting discussion so check those out when you get a chance my guests today are John Ulloa and Arnold Camacho John is a youth
[00:13:01] pastor out at foothills church here in Southern California San Diego East County and so is Arnold he’s at shadow
[00:13:07] Mountain and if you want to check out their ministries I encourage you to do so future quest TV is the website for
[00:13:14] John and then Shadow Mountain Arg backslash high school for Arnold and
[00:13:19] John why don’t you tell us a little bit about what what is future quest and how does this play into your youth ministry
[00:13:26] and it give us a little background on that future quest is an annual youth conference that we started and that we
[00:13:33] host on our campus every year this is our 21st year running our conference 21
[00:13:39] years that’s amazing yeah we started at around 250 students and now we have
[00:13:45] around 2400 that come every year and so it isn’t just for our church it’s for
[00:13:50] the church we invite students from seventh grade to 12th grade so we have
[00:13:56] main speakers concerts attractions practical workshops to help them grow
[00:14:01] our vision for future quests that students would come youth groups would come and be empowered be given vision
[00:14:08] hear from the Lord and take that back to their respective churches neighborhood schools and live more boldly for Christ
[00:14:15] that is fantastic now I’ve had the privilege of being able to be a speaker at that for several years now and I was
[00:14:23] blown away the first year I came that I could not how many students that were there but what I really think is cool about it is how you take kids and you have them go
[00:14:31] out and do actually kind of feed the poor and do different things reach out to the community it’s not just sitting
[00:14:37] and listening it’s actually getting out and doing doing stuff yeah a vision for future quests is for students to understand they have a call from God
[00:14:44] right now not later not when they’re older or married or have a career right now God wants to use you and so part of
[00:14:50] the vision for future quest is give them hands on ministry opportunities to see how God can use them when they’re
[00:14:55] willing to step out in faith and do something now how does this impact your youth ministry I mean is this just for other youth groups they come in they
[00:15:01] they experience this and they go back to their home Church what is the impact of this particular event on your church as
[00:15:09] a whole this is it’s an injection of
[00:15:14] adrenaline into our church every year for our all of the people of our church everyone knows future quests every year
[00:15:20] we have hundreds and hundreds of volunteers to help out every year of all ages throughout our church and for our
[00:15:26] youth group same thing an injection of adrenaline for our students our camps
[00:15:31] and future quests are the spiritual highlights of many of their lives so many of the testimonies we hear if
[00:15:37] students are oh god got a hold of me god changed my life you know over half the time that we hear those stories it’s at
[00:15:43] a future quest I met with the Lord I experienced him and so for us it’s an
[00:15:49] incredible testimony of just God’s faithfulness and goodness when we present an opportunity for students to
[00:15:54] come and encounter him he shows up that is great and and you said the highlight for you where you’re seeing kids really
[00:16:01] radically impacted or you’re hearing people come to know the Lord is through future quest or the camps what kind of
[00:16:08] camps do you go on each year our youth ministry runs camps during the summer
[00:16:13] and during the winter months you know when students are on break and so we do a camp in August and another camp
[00:16:18] December January over those breaks okay and do do are a lot of kids that aren’t
[00:16:25] a regular part of the youth ministry coming to those camps or is that mainly your your youth ministry yeah we
[00:16:31] actually we see a lot of students who will come to camp or come to future quest every year who we may not
[00:16:36] regularly see maybe due to schedule conflicts or other things but camps tend to be a big
[00:16:41] priority because we we designed them to be very spiritually focused we want
[00:16:47] students to come and encounter God but also very fun and engaging so they know if I come to camp I’m gonna have four
[00:16:54] days of an incredible time and I’m gonna meet with the Lord as well that’s great and then when when you have these camps
[00:17:01] going on and everything and kids come to know the Lord you know one of the questions I think that’s out there is there’s this kind of balance that you
[00:17:09] have to keep between discipleship and also drawing kids in you know it’s evangelism but then you don’t want to
[00:17:16] just go wide you want to go deep too and so is that how does that work out in
[00:17:23] your youth ministry in our ministry we have a couple unique aspects to it yeah
[00:17:28] where we have an entirely different ministry for outreach so we have clubs
[00:17:36] on public school campuses that we support Bible clubs at the junior high and the high school level that we
[00:17:44] support and so that’s part of outreach for us but we also have teen centers four of them around East County that
[00:17:51] were actually five now we have one an Alpine that we are involved with where
[00:17:56] we are reaching out to students in their neighborhoods inviting them to come to these centers where there’s free
[00:18:02] entertainment video games pool tables ping pong and they’re run by volunteers who build relationships with students
[00:18:09] mentor them teach them about Jesus and through those centers we bring them into
[00:18:15] Church and into the youth group so we have this evangelism aspect or ministry
[00:18:22] that’s kind of outside bringing students in and as they come in we bring them into small groups we bring them into our
[00:18:27] weekly youth meetings and they’re able to go deeper in that way I see okay and
[00:18:32] then when they come in from these Bible clubs in the schools or they these teen centers and then they end up going to
[00:18:38] camp or they get involved with future quest so this is kind of a this is kind
[00:18:43] of the process of discipleship then getting to know the Lord deeper while building relationships with mentors and so forth exactly yeah that is really
[00:18:50] great well Arnold I know that the ministry you’re involved with I mean you have an event going on this evening you’re
[00:18:57] working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and supporting what’s happening there that’s really amazing what are the
[00:19:02] what do you consider the key kind of events or or where are you seeing kids come to know the Lord through the
[00:19:09] ministry as is it similar to what John is saying or yeah I mean well we’ll have events throughout the year as well that
[00:19:16] kind of if you look at it like a funnel effect you know that the top of the funnel is a little more outreach and
[00:19:22] then just pack it down all the way to the bottom whereas where we would consider our Wednesday nights and our
[00:19:27] Sunday mornings we’re more of our regular kids come and we get them connected to small groups yeah so a
[00:19:32] little more evangelistic would be like an event like tonight so we partner with like FCA who is in the schools you know
[00:19:40] we know that they’re there they’ve established a long relationship yeah and it helps gets us into the schools and we
[00:19:48] like to partner with them and so tonight event is a is a picture of that where
[00:19:54] we’re working together to you know not only bring athletes but all students and
[00:20:00] and we pump it that way and we advertise it that way that’s not even though it says poster for student athletes it’s
[00:20:06] also the gathering yes partnering with them and so that’s kind of one event we
[00:20:11] had another one just a few years sorry just a few months back in September
[00:20:16] where it was specifically to like young high school girls and so we had a hundreds of girls show up for this and
[00:20:24] had Sadie Robertson here to be able to speak to those girls and encourage those girls yeah so again trying to create
[00:20:29] events that are a little more wide open where it’s easy for students to say hey
[00:20:37] you should come to me to this where it may not be easy for them to say hey you
[00:20:42] want to come to Babbo said it with me on Wednesday night or Sunday morning Pemex uh and so another one for us is
[00:20:48] river trip so we don’t have a winter we have a river trip in the spring and so that’s become kind of our go-to for
[00:20:56] really wide open it make it very very inexpensive and make it as easy as
[00:21:02] possible for kid to invite multiple of their friends to get to the river and there is a very
[00:21:09] just clear opportunity to present the gospel and and keep it kind of
[00:21:15] grassroots and from there we kind of push toward summer camp and other events
[00:21:20] during the summer where they can get involved yeah deeper into selfish that’s great my guests today are John
[00:21:25] Ulloa and Arnold Camacho they’re both high school youth pastors and when we come back we’re gonna talk a little bit about some of the struggles of being a
[00:21:32] youth pastor and some of what some of our Arnold and John have to face and

[00:24:19] also hear some podcast guys wave to the camera this is my guest today are John and Arnold and both youth pastors
[00:24:26] working in relatively large churches and you know I used to work in a youth
[00:24:31] ministry I was a youth pastor of a smaller Church and it was a lot of fun a
[00:24:38] lot of work a lot of challenges very rewarding but I wanted to talk a little bit about that with you guys what are
[00:24:44] some of the challenges you face and that youth pastors face in general and maybe some encouragement to people out there
[00:24:50] about how they can pray for youth pastors and their own youth pastor in their church as well as maybe there’s
[00:24:55] somebody who’s just getting involved in in youth ministry and what you advise you might give them maybe some potholes
[00:25:02] you hit that you could help them avoid in as they enter youth ministry John we’ll start with you I think one of the
[00:25:09] number one keys and longevity in youth ministry that I had to learn was how to
[00:25:15] overcome discouragement anyone in full-time ministry knows like ministry can be discouraging with young people
[00:25:22] especially as fickle as we as people are when we’re young and it’s even worse and
[00:25:27] yeah it’s a reality yeah and part of it is just the way that God created us yeah
[00:25:33] to be passionate and zealous and and there’s just a you know a foolishness that comes with youth and so in youth
[00:25:40] ministry learning that what I’m doing I’m doing for the Lord not for myself
[00:25:46] not for a number not even like not even for this specific student to see some
[00:25:52] kind of growth that I’m expecting but all right God you called me to be faithful and to serve here and as I’m
[00:25:58] doing that I can have a piece that like I’m being obedient me being a
[00:26:04] active means me being faithful to Jesus and serving and loving these students we’re in trusting that the outcome of
[00:26:11] that is in his hands and I don’t have to carry the burden of that because I went through seasons of feeling like oh
[00:26:17] they’re not responding they’re not growing you know this kid that I’m mentoring every week is getting worse
[00:26:24] and I’m like what have I done and just recognizing yeah worse as I’m being
[00:26:32] faithful to love and serve as God’s called me to I don’t have to carry the burden of the outcome of that yeah so
[00:26:40] well that’s a hard lesson to learn because it’s one thing to know it in your head but it’s harder to feel it in
[00:26:46] your heart I mean I had a friend who told me one you passed rate he said before each you know his service he
[00:26:53] would hide behind the chairs and lie down just like haha he was so afraid of
[00:26:58] how things were gonna go and and then you know I know I used to beat myself up
[00:27:04] after a Sunday morning if I felt like I did a bad I’d be like honey how did I do and she’d be like stop asking me that
[00:27:10] you ask me that everything and so how do you get that from your head because as
[00:27:16] to your heart is that just time or how did that work for you a number of hard
[00:27:21] lessons that that the Lord really was able to kind of drill it in where I
[00:27:27] realize like I can’t take this and he’s like well why are you trying to carry it in the first place yeah and also that
[00:27:33] lesson like I wish I could say just on my own I discerned that and came up with that yeah I asked older leaders how do
[00:27:40] you do it how do you have you done this for so many years I watched them get burned and people people turn their back
[00:27:47] and betray them and and I had my pastor told me that’s how I remember I’m doing
[00:27:54] this for Jesus and the outcome isn’t on me as long as I’m being faithful and doing what he’s called me to do I can
[00:28:00] trust that that outcome of that is in his hands and I am I’m pleasing him by
[00:28:06] being faithful and obedient regardless of what that’s to how that student may or may not respond so it’s just
[00:28:12] consistently just refocusing on Christ and that hey I’m being faithful absolutely
[00:28:17] if I’m focused on just the results or the number or you know wanting to see the student perform a certain way I’m
[00:28:24] gonna be disappointed nine times out of ten yeah and there is a pretty high attrition rate among youth pastors I mean I’ve heard and you can correct me
[00:28:31] if I’m wrong but I’ve heard that the average time is only about five years that somebody stays in youth ministry you know if that’s that’s a key is that
[00:28:37] I mean it would fit with the every two years they get moved from one place to the other okay then I can burn you out
[00:28:43] ya know and get more discouraging yeah I mean I I would agree with with what what
[00:28:50] John said you know for me I had to sitting at a stoplight after being in a
[00:28:56] Bible study through the book of Acts yeah and it finally hit me where we kept
[00:29:02] studying this idea where as you read through the book of Acts you hear the
[00:29:12] Lord say I added to the church you know Christ is the one that adds to the church he’s the one that grew it yeah to
[00:29:19] these guys and and their efforts and that to me hit me so hard where I felt
[00:29:25] the Lord say to me you know you’re worrying too much about the heart work that’s mine and you need to focus in on
[00:29:34] what I’m giving you and and once I felt that peace and that release come off that weight – pressure off it was it was
[00:29:42] a lot of pressure where were these kids end up and then after a year in years and we’ve been doing this you 12 years
[00:29:47] me thirteen you you know you start hearing where these kids go hmm right
[00:29:53] let’s get married you know jobs whatever and sadly a lot of times you hear the
[00:30:00] high percentage of kids that just drop off yeah or what they’re doing with their lives and you wonder was your work
[00:30:06] in vain yeah so there’s the immediate but then there’s that longevity once you’re in it for a while you’re like oh
[00:30:11] man and so that could even be discouraging so I needed that I needed the Lord to just release that from my
[00:30:17] back and be like let me deal with the heart you deal with the environments
[00:30:23] that you’re bringing those hearts into yeah um and and and we’ll work you know I’ll work through you and that’s great
[00:30:29] in that ministry so yeah and and that is tough but yeah amen to that God is the one that brings the increase
[00:30:35] right so so now another issue I think that people struggle with you know is is
[00:30:41] family time you know it can be overwhelming as a youth pastor you just
[00:30:47] are doing this 24/7 and it’s not your you know eight hour a day job to your
[00:30:54] all your honor I mean you might as well be a doctor but you get you know you get paid less so yo
[00:31:01] so how do you guys navigate that Arnold we’ll start with you how do you navigate the the constant pool to do more and
[00:31:08] more and more yeah you there’s never a lack of work yeah that’s for sure yeah I
[00:31:16] asked my wife on that getting phone calls sometimes at 2:00 in the morning from students who you know finally they
[00:31:22] got got something right they got themselves in trouble and yeah you know things like that but for me I did have
[00:31:30] to learn early on and I learned the hard way of getting involved and running and going and chasing down students and
[00:31:38] trying to you know do the best that I could just feeling this burn out really
[00:31:44] yeah and and so learning through that I I learned that you know my family really
[00:31:51] is my first ministry and then I had kids and I really needed to engage in that
[00:31:56] yeah and so what I do is I gave my wife a trump card and basically she has say
[00:32:04] if you know she sees me you know out too much or too many nights or too many
[00:32:10] hours or things like that she’s got the call to be able to say all right babe
[00:32:15] you know you’ve been gone these days this is kind of what we’re seeing because I think what happens to us is we
[00:32:21] get into this tunnel effect go go go go go that you’re not able to stop like
[00:32:26] chasing the carrot like exactly I’m almost there I’m almost there I’m almost exactly and and you you can’t step back
[00:32:33] and and look at what you’re doing and so for me it’s been super helpful to have
[00:32:39] my wife and so I constantly ask her babe how am i doing how is family time
[00:32:45] going you know and along with that comes a lot of preset things you know having dinner on these nights and because you
[00:32:52] know Wednesday nights I’m not there yeah um my I get home my kids are asleep so so so that balancing out getting ahead
[00:32:59] of it and then just having constant conversation with my wife that like you know you’ve got you’ve got the call here
[00:33:05] yeah I want to I’m gonna ask you another thing we’re coming up on a break here but I want to ask you a little bit more about that my guests today are John
[00:33:11] Ulloa and Arnold Camacho and they are a longtime youth ministry workers and youth pastors they work with high school

[00:36:06] pastors here in Southern California future quest TV is Johnny Louis a
[00:36:11] website and then Shadow Man org backslash high school is Arnold’s website and I wanted to ask you
[00:36:19] specifically Arnold you said that you gave your wife the trump card when it comes to family and that’s not a
[00:36:25] political position but you you basically said at some point she gets to say
[00:36:31] enough is enough so practically speaking how does that play out I mean has she ever had to call that on you and be like
[00:36:38] hey lookit here’s the deal you’ve been away for a week you know the next two days and how do you how do you speak
[00:36:45] that – you know you’re your senior pastor or the person that’s above you you know how do you convey that your
[00:36:51] wife is saying hey you’re doing too much how does that play out yeah so definitely it’s happened in the past not
[00:36:56] in a harsh way you’re like you need to take a sabbatical yeah but it has happened in moments where you know camps
[00:37:03] are around or the calendars getting loaded yeah that’s another thing you know we share that calendar and we kind
[00:37:10] of put it in red to make sure that this is what’s going on and it starts adding up she’ll be like hey we need to think
[00:37:15] about that because you’re gonna be gone here the kids are gonna be doing this you know I will be working whatever and
[00:37:22] so and what I love about our leaders is that they encourage family and so that’s
[00:37:27] a huge that’s bang is that they’re not expecting for me to put my my family on
[00:37:33] the back burner while I do ministry and so that’s been nice to have those conversations with my leaders and they
[00:37:40] from the very beginning be like the healthy family is important you know care if you have your head if your
[00:37:45] family’s falling apart your ministry’s gonna fall exactly yeah yeah it’s just gonna feed right into that and so yes
[00:37:52] she’s definitely had to call it I also have you know a a spicy wife who is not
[00:37:58] afraid of me yeah and doesn’t take me too seriously and so uh along yes she
[00:38:04] she has no problem yeah I’m you know what she thinks yeah she she is uh our wives are
[00:38:09] honestly the helpmate right the Bible says that I thought this was really interesting I heard somebody say that
[00:38:15] the word that’s used for helpmate in Genesis is only used by about the Holy
[00:38:21] Spirit and I thought wow that’s really powerful that God uses the same word for
[00:38:26] the wife that he does for the Holy Spirit I mean that’s pretty intense but it’s true though we need that so so
[00:38:32] share with us John how does that play out for you well for me I am not yet married so I am in this unique position
[00:38:38] that you don’t know the whole experience good is all I have some
[00:38:46] where you know I’m able to pour in a different amount of time and energy which you know in this season I’m
[00:38:52] enjoying yeah and so you know eventually that isn’t gonna be the case but it still doesn’t change the fact that there
[00:38:58] is I have to find a balance there because there is always more work there’s always more need there’s always
[00:39:04] another student that could use someone to talk to or meet with yeah and and
[00:39:09] realizing that I in those times where I’m trying to do everything and things
[00:39:15] get off balance I am NOT well-suited to work with young people when that’s off
[00:39:20] balance oh yeah and recognizing alright I need to step back I need you know it’s it’s interesting that being in ministry
[00:39:27] you can be so busy in ministry that you neglect your own relationship with the Lord and so carving out that really good
[00:39:33] point what you just said there cuz maybe we can camp on that for a second because a lot of people look at ministry and
[00:39:38] they go hey that you know there’s my relationship with the Lord but when you say you can be so involved in ministry
[00:39:43] that you neglect a relationship with the Lord what do you mean by that exactly I think it is easy to to take what I do for God
[00:39:52] and to say like oh this is my relationship with God and and it’s not it’s part of me serving him and being
[00:39:58] obedient to him and wanting to honor him but a relationship with him is just like a relation with anyone else it’s built
[00:40:04] on time and communication and you know if you know a husband if you’re just
[00:40:10] running around doing work for your wife but not ever actually spending time with her talking to her your relationship is
[00:40:15] gonna suffer yeah and repoint you know there been times where I’ve been busy so busy doing
[00:40:21] things for God a rose oh I haven’t actually spent any time talking to you so how do you how do you not having a
[00:40:28] wife and there’s many youth pastors that are single how do you hold yourself accountable to that how does that work
[00:40:36] as far as you know going okay man I need to scale back a little bit party is
[00:40:42] having leaders that I’m open and transparent with mentors and close friends in my life who I know aren’t
[00:40:48] gonna be afraid to call me out and go hey like there’s something off there you know a mentor that I meet with and and
[00:40:55] share all those things with and give him kind of open open communication to call me out
[00:41:00] in to help me to grow in those areas that maybe I’m not recognizing myself okay that’s great so good advice for
[00:41:07] those who are in ministry is have somebody out there that that you know isn’t not necessarily somebody that is
[00:41:14] directly involved with you in ministry or somebody that you can be open and transparent with yeah that’s great
[00:41:19] lutely so something else I wanted to ask you guys about that I think is a big thing on people’s minds is volunteers
[00:41:26] you know I think there’s a struggle to go okay I’m trying to pull people in
[00:41:32] here to help out and how do you how do you guys work with volunteers how do you raise up volunteers how do you inspire
[00:41:39] volunteers because that’s not always an easy thing to do when you’re placing a lot of expectation especially when
[00:41:44] you’re doing something like future quest or these these are camps and and River trips and all and so tell us Arnold how
[00:41:52] do you work with volunteers yeah people will think sometimes do you work at a large church so you’ll have you know an
[00:41:58] abundance of volunteers yeah yeah not the case no okay I think across the board doesn’t matter what size church
[00:42:04] you’re at you’re gonna struggle with volunteers because people are giving their free time and and so for me
[00:42:12] I learned early on its it starts with a couple things one the type of leaders
[00:42:17] that I think we’re looking for which is inspiring and working with teens yeah and hearing their stories they want to
[00:42:26] be pursued they they they’re not just gonna look at a invitation in the
[00:42:31] bulletin in saying oh maybe I’ll show you know throw my name in the bucket yeah because you specially for us we’re
[00:42:38] talking about teenagers and what happens to adults a lot of times is they feel like they’re gonna be taken back to high
[00:42:43] school and let’s be honest high school wasn’t always the best for all of us right it’s a lot of pressure from
[00:42:48] different groups right I think a lot of adults are intimidated by highs very very intimidated you know and then do I
[00:42:56] have the right answer you know all those things so they want to be pursued and so so in that what I like to do is I like
[00:43:02] to very truly personalize it and cast a very very compelling vision I feel that
[00:43:10] if I can get them to agree on the vision and be about the vision to the point where where do I
[00:43:15] sign up and not only that how can they
[00:43:20] be a part of that vision to help us accomplish the goals that the Lord is calling us to in that ministry I think
[00:43:27] you can have them for life because for me I know something that they may not know and that is they’ve been built to
[00:43:34] be a part of the church in the body of Christ and to work in ministry not
[00:43:39] necessarily full-time like us sure but to be a part right and so I know that if I can just get them to that place where
[00:43:45] they sink their teeth into ministry even just once seeing a kid come to the Lord
[00:43:51] for the first time yeah seeing one of their small group kids get baptized or maybe that kid that you’ve been working
[00:43:57] with for months finally gets it and you see it in their face get it that’s the
[00:44:02] world man yeah that’ll be the world to your volunteer and so giving them space to theirs so
[00:44:07] not just saying it yeah but actually doing it where you’re not gonna do all the work for them you kind of back off
[00:44:13] and you let give them space to do some of that ministry so not micromanaging correct yeah actually trusting them and
[00:44:20] not treating them as wallflowers because that’s what happens a lot of times volunteers I think I think it’s key and
[00:44:25] so well you promised them and what you envisioned for them truly make it happen for them and once they sink their teeth
[00:44:32] into and they see it actually planning out oh man they’ll stay with you forever that’s cool very good advice well well
[00:44:38] we’re on a break here but John we’ll get your feedback on that question too how do you how do you work with volunteers
[00:44:43] how do you inspire volunteers my guests today are John Ulloa and Arnold Camacho youth pastors Youth high school youth

[00:47:02] – EF lor G welcome to educate for life
[00:47:11] I’m your host Kevin Conover and I really appreciate you being here with us today on this Saturday and if you’re watching
[00:47:17] online I hope you’re enjoying the program so far my guest today John Ulloa and Arnold Camacho and it’s always good to hear
[00:47:23] what people are going through from a different perspective right and youth ministry especially you can get trapped
[00:47:30] in kind of your own bubble because you’re so busy you’re doing so much that you don’t get to hear other people’s
[00:47:36] perspectives or what they’re going through or how they do things if they do things differently so I think this is a great opportunity to just hear from two
[00:47:43] guys they’ve been doing ministry from a long time and again john’s website is future quest TV and Arnold shadow
[00:47:50] mountain org backslash high school and real quick John you were saying that you had a concert coming up in February
[00:47:56] I’m sorry Arnold yeah sorry yeah in February we are having a Sidewalk Prophets here which just invitation
[00:48:03] really to all but you know really pushing toward youth and young young people so that’s favorite 18th great ok Sunday
[00:48:11] night and then when is the river trip typically the river trip is always the last weekend of April ok leave this year’s April 28th and 29th where we
[00:48:19] literally jump on charter buses and go out to the Colorado River with a bunch of boats and we wake board and we tube
[00:48:25] and have live music and it’s how many kids end up going to that we had 210
[00:48:32] last year that’s all with with leaders – and whatnot but it was hot yeah but it
[00:48:38] was fun we had a great so that’s great fantastic again at shadow mountain org backslash high school and then John
[00:48:44] future quest when does future quest happen future quest is the last week of
[00:48:51] June this year is going to be the 27th to the 29th of June it’s a three-day conference students come at noon each
[00:48:57] day go home each night around 9:00 9:30 p.m. and it’s broken up main sessions
[00:49:04] workshops free time concerts there’s a wide array of stuff for them to be that’s great and you need a ton of
[00:49:10] volunteers for that right yeah we have hundreds of volunteers so how many how many volunteers make
[00:49:15] you said you have hundreds like you’re talking like 100 200 300 like more in the 400 range wow that’s crazy yeah 100
[00:49:23] volunteers so so how do you get those volunteers and then you know how do you
[00:49:28] do these volunteers stay on throughout the year you probably don’t need that many but how do you inspire kind of the
[00:49:34] same question I asked Arnold yeah I’m fortunate our senior pastors their heart is youth ministry it’s a vision for our
[00:49:41] church and so I as a high school pastor I don’t feel like I’m trying to sell
[00:49:47] people on that vision as much I feel like they do it it’s great and so a lot of our church is involved in youth
[00:49:53] ministry in kids ministry junior high high school and so future quest is a regular part of the life of our church
[00:49:59] and everyone knows every year future quest is coming up and so we do have yeah so we do have volunteers who the
[00:50:06] only youth menisci sure they do is future quest every year but they love it and know I’m all in for a quest and then
[00:50:11] there’s some that you know we have a lot of our like faithful youth volunteers who help throughout the year in small
[00:50:17] groups or in our various youth ministries who also will help out at future quest every year yeah now do you
[00:50:23] have any struggles with volunteers I mean what what are are there any you know struggles that you face having so
[00:50:29] many volunteers or organizational wise or things like that with with future quest there are times it’s like alright we
[00:50:35] don’t need as many volunteers as we have and not a problem that most people have right yeah unfortunately it’s just
[00:50:41] future quest and we feel that way but of course as with any regular youth ministries I don’t say there’s always a
[00:50:47] greater need for volunteers yeah we do a survey of our students every year on
[00:50:52] what are the most successful aspects of our youth ministry so she our graduating seniors what have you enjoyed the most
[00:50:59] yeah these four years and as much as we would love that to be our program and
[00:51:04] our messages and whatever the the top-rated thing almost every time is
[00:51:09] relationships with adults yeah I mean so we try to let our volunteers know hey we
[00:51:16] need you there students who need you yeah that’s really want that’s really interesting because a lot of volunteers that wouldn’t be going through their
[00:51:22] mind they be thinking these kids don’t want to know what I you know I’m an old fuddy-duddy here right yeah absolutely
[00:51:27] so so that interesting so what is it that the kids are gaining from these relationship with
[00:51:32] the adults that’s so powerful well some students don’t have a Christian parent
[00:51:38] at home and so the an adult they’re gonna meet at our youth group and build a relationship with and get to know on a
[00:51:44] first-name basis and open up to is gonna be the only older Christian influence that they have in their life at a
[00:51:50] personal level yeah and some that do you have godly parents we have students who grew up in our church their parents are
[00:51:56] involved and they and their parents recognize the value of having someone else reinforcing those oh yeah
[00:52:02] absolutely yeah for them to talk to you yeah because sometimes the kid doesn’t want to listen to their parents and they’re like most of the time so to have
[00:52:11] somebody else say no I agree with your parents that I that helps to order with them yeah that’s really great huh very
[00:52:18] interesting and then we’re running up here we’re almost out of time but I wanted to just throw this out here real
[00:52:24] quick too so I think a big struggle you know is discipleship in a way and going
[00:52:30] deep in I think when I was a youth pastor I was battling between drawing
[00:52:36] kids in and then hoping that they would stay for the meat of the word you know
[00:52:42] to really get to know God how do you deal with that when there’s so many things like that are attractive
[00:52:50] otherwise like video games and we have so much with social media and all and what are some of the things and I know
[00:52:57] we’re gonna run out of time before we can finish the discussion but there’s a lot of struggle with what’s happening
[00:53:02] with social media and kids on their phones all the time how are you dealing
[00:53:08] with these issues that really are pertaining to now versus back when I was
[00:53:14] a kid or maybe you were a kid they weren’t the same issues how can people pray for young people
[00:53:20] today and and some of the struggles they’re going through Arnold I honestly I think that there’s something out there
[00:53:27] that trumps all of those things you will always deal with them you know but I I
[00:53:34] think it’s relationships if you can put a person mentor I mean look at us we
[00:53:42] ended up here because mentors yeah that up here B was powerful person yeah and we were upon two in our
[00:53:47] own way in that time even though you know we had pagers you know whatever
[00:53:53] those are alright and so so I feel like it’s the same thing it’s community it’s
[00:53:59] it’s it’s connecting a student to an adult that says you know what I’m gonna
[00:54:04] take some personal responsibility to find out where that kid is spiritually and help them take their next spiritual
[00:54:10] step it doesn’t matter if there are a thousand steps before Jesus or a thousand steps after Jesus I’m just
[00:54:16] gonna take that and consistency in that I feel that if we honestly believe if we
[00:54:21] if when kids come to our ministry if I can get them to a small group where the
[00:54:28] dialog can begin not necessarily an adult just spitting out a bunch of verses and yeah stuff at them but
[00:54:35] actually connecting and talking with them and giving them an opportunity for that those kids won’t leave because
[00:54:42] they’re like this is a place where it cuz think about it between Sunday and Wednesday how many how many opportunities has a kid at has actually
[00:54:49] had to speak their spoken at all the time coaches teachers parents me on
[00:54:54] Sunday morning right but on a Wednesday night it’s like no let’s flip the script and I tell my leaders the less you can
[00:55:01] speak the better ask good questions guide them that’s rated allow these kids
[00:55:07] to have a dialogue and there’s where you’ll see men this person and then you do it consistently and then you know we
[00:55:14] go beyond that where we have them try to show up at their games and brochures and things like that if we can and in all of
[00:55:20] that to me that stuff is trumped with a relationship because once you actually build that and you and these kids
[00:55:26] actually feel like someone cares for me and it’s pointing me to Jesus I think slowly those things can be defeated
[00:55:33] that’s fantastic John yeah I second that and also you’re talking about entertainment and kind of battling
[00:55:39] against that one of our philosophies of youth ministry is we earn the right to speak to students I know that I’m gonna
[00:55:46] ask you to sit and listen to a thirty or either case maybe 45 minutes you know you’re sitting and hearing something but
[00:55:52] I’m gonna make sure that you have an incredible time and I’ve earned the right to speak to you because the more fun that a kid has
[00:55:59] and the more I can engage him even with using those things using video games and using different things you’re gonna be
[00:56:05] more open to the gospel you’re gonna be more open you’re gonna trust me more I’m not just a random person be like hey sit
[00:56:11] down and listen to me but I through time invested and fun and energy invested
[00:56:17] like we have a rapport and I can speak – yeah that’s the relational aspect yeah guys man it’s been a super huge blessing
[00:56:25] having you on the program today and hopefully you out there listening I hope that this has been an encouragement to
