Solving the School Shootings Problem – Nate Landis
In this episode of The Educate for Life Podcast, host Kevin Conover sits down with urban ministry leader Nate Landis for a deeply needed conversation at the intersection of Christian education, biblical worldview formation, and the real struggles facing today’s teens. As school shootings continue to dominate headlines, Christian parents and homeschool families are searching for answers rooted not in fear, but in faith, truth, and the unchanging hope of Jesus Christ. This episode explores how the gospel speaks powerfully into one of the most urgent issues of our time.
When the Gospel Steps Onto Campus: A Conversation with Nate Landis
Nate Landis—founder of Urban Youth Collaborative and a longtime voice in Christian apologetics for public schools—brings nearly two decades of front-line ministry experience into this discussion. With 97 school campuses now partnering with his organization, Nate witnesses firsthand the emotional and spiritual landscape students navigate every day. He shares why the real crisis behind school violence is not simply political or psychological, but deeply spiritual, pointing us back to a worldview rooted in Scripture and the transformative power of Christ.
Together, Kevin and Nate examine the hard questions Christian educators and parents carry: Why is youth violence rising? What role does the Church play? How do we give students more than rules and restrictions—how do we help them experience true heart change? Nate’s stories—from student-led prayer gatherings to life-changing campus ministries—offer a hopeful, biblical lens on what is happening in today’s schools and how revival begins, one young person at a time.
This episode is especially valuable for listeners invested in Christian parenting, youth discipleship, and shaping a resilient, Christ-centered generation through apologetics, community engagement, and intentional spiritual formation.

School shootings appear to be on the rise. According to some sources, there have already been 17 school shootings in 2018. That’s twice as many as the first two months of last year. What is causing this rise in school shootings? Is there a solution to this problem?
Kevin’s guest today is Nate Landis with Urban Youth Collaborative. According to Nate Landis, there is a good solution that would solve gun violence in schools and it isn’t gun control. The real solution is to get churches involved in schools.
Nate Landis and the Urban Youth Collaborative sponsor student-led Christian groups that work their schools and communities to impact them for Christ. Urban Youth Collaborative (UYC) is a coalition of 45 church partners that support student-initiated and student-led faith clubs at 97 middle and high school campuses in San Diego County and motivational assemblies in Mexico. Students serve physical and spiritual food to over three thousands of their friends each week and look for practical ways to make a difference in their local communities. In 2017, young people generated over 30,000 hours of voluntary community service in Southern California and around the world!
Tune in to hear how Nate Landis believes the issue of school shooting can be solved by students from the inside out. If you want to find out more about Urban Youth Collaborative, head over to https://www.uyc.org. You can also learn how to get involved to change your community and/or your school.
This episode first aired on March 3, 2018.

Here’s a short excerpt from the conversation:
- Kevin: “When school shootings keep rising, people want answers. But what if the solution isn’t just laws or lockdowns, but a change of the human heart?”
- Nate: “Exactly. You can legislate behavior, but only Jesus transforms a life. And I see it every week—kids who encounter Christ become peacemakers on their campuses.”
- Nate: “When students pray, when they lead, when they love their classmates in Jesus’ name—you can feel the atmosphere shift. That’s where real hope begins.”
- Kevin: “That’s why these conversations matter. Parents need to know that God is still moving in our schools.”

[00:00:12] us we’re screaming on Facebook today and this program will also air on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. this morning
[00:00:19] threatening messages this is the this is the title of a news article from Fox 5 threatening messages spray-painted on
[00:00:25] Rancho Bernardo high walls and it goes down to explain about 20 threatening graffiti messages claiming there would
[00:00:32] be a school shooting Monday were found spray painted around Rancho Bernardo high school’s campus Monday morning that
[00:00:38] is this morning prompting a large-scale police presence and an investigation an officer said in photographs posted on
[00:00:45] social media the graffiti giant of the graffiti made apparent references to the deadly shooting on Valentine’s Day at
[00:00:51] Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in parkland Florida and threatened a
[00:00:56] shooting would happen at noon Monday on the campus in Rancho Bernardo and there’s all kinds of they have some
[00:01:03] photos up here on the web it says Florida was nothing and then there’s a reference to the KKK there’s a
[00:01:09] swastika all kind of stuff that’s just horrible that that you can’t imagine
[00:01:15] somebody would actually put this on the walls and my guest today is Nate Landis
[00:01:20] Nate is with the urban youth collaborative he earned a BA from Eastern University in sociology and
[00:01:26] youth ministry also an m.div from gordon-conwell Theological Seminary with
[00:01:31] an urban ministry emphasis and he heads up a ministry that he started called
[00:01:36] urban youth collaborative that reaches into the public schools and ministers the love of Jesus Christ to students all
[00:01:42] over the county now in 97 schools is that right Nate that’s right yeah five
[00:01:48] in Mexico and 92 in San Diego that is absolutely phenomenal so if you have questions for Nate please
[00:01:54] feel free to hop in and listen he’s a great resource about because he’s right
[00:01:59] there in the schools he’s dealing with the students on a regular basis if you want to call in and ask a question the number is 8 6 6 5 7 7 2 4 7 3 or you can
[00:02:08] just type your question right on to the internet on Facebook we’re screaming screaming
[00:02:14] on Facebook and I’d be happy to address your question to Nate whatever the case but Nate what I wanted to ask you is you
[00:02:20] know there’s this what seems to be and correct me if I’m wrong I’m wrong but there seems to be an increase in school
[00:02:27] shootings going on year after year it seems like it’s definitely not going
[00:02:32] down and we just had this big school shooting in Florida and I was looking at the news on what was going on there but
[00:02:38] I’m just curious about your perspective somebody how long have you been in the high schools now ministering to youth
[00:02:44] we’ve been doing this since 2009 as an organization and before that I’ve been in public schools doing ministry as a
[00:02:50] youth worker for about 10 years now we started in 2006 so just a little over 10
[00:02:57] years now ok so that’s quite a while so you’re looking at how many years total what is it 12 12 years so so in your
[00:03:03] your your analysis of this situation where we’re seeing these kinds of things how do you you know why is it happening
[00:03:10] and I mean what a lot of people want to know is what’s the solution we Trump just came out and said hey we need to
[00:03:15] professionally train and arm particular teachers to deal with this kind of
[00:03:21] situation give us your perspective on these things well I think we have to make the most of every opportunity
[00:03:26] because we’re living in dangerous times I live in the inner city where kids often are in in places where they’re
[00:03:34] afraid of gun violence and walking home from school and gang activity all of
[00:03:39] that is on the forefront of their minds yeah and I think this just goes to show us that sin can go anywhere beyond a
[00:03:45] quote dangerous neighborhood where now every every young person yes Andrew
[00:03:50] Bernardo is not typically you don’t think of that as an inner city hardcore sort of situation yeah I think the need
[00:03:56] for heart change in the need for people to come to Christ is more real than ever
[00:04:03] and that’s transcend every neighborhood that’s a universal need and and I think
[00:04:08] we have people now that are trying to copycat or threaten I think fortunately the situation you mentioned was a hoax
[00:04:15] yeah the date and time were specified on the graffiti and we’re now past that and
[00:04:21] we’re not we’re not zooming into live news coverage fortunately so now they had a lot of police I heard they brought
[00:04:27] a there was a heavy police presence from what I can tell we had one staff member in that neighborhood update me and the
[00:04:33] police were there and there were lots of people being vigilant and and lots of
[00:04:39] people praying and so fortunately it was a hoax but I think we need more kids who
[00:04:45] are not just pretending to do evil but that can plot good for one another and that’s what we’re interested in focusing
[00:04:51] on because I know if you don’t have anything to live for then all these other things to be against come up and
[00:04:58] and they might kids just might be looking for something that that’s worth giving their lives to and yeah instead
[00:05:05] of watching all these other people taking life and watching people going out after other people groups and so on
[00:05:11] and being able to love one another is really where life is that yeah that’s where that’s where the the joy and
[00:05:18] purpose is found well that’s a that’s a huge you know statement you’re making that hey you know the solution here is
[00:05:24] Jesus Christ and I think you and I both agree on that wholeheartedly right but
[00:05:29] then when it comes to putting you know our feet to the street here and saying
[00:05:35] okay so how does that happen the question is is can we really make a big enough difference to have an impact
[00:05:41] where you’re going to begin to see you know that reverse that change where you’re gonna see less school shootings
[00:05:47] you’re gonna see less school violence you’re gonna see more kids embrace that I mean from a political position you
[00:05:54] know we’re coming up on an election year here in San Diego if you were to run for office would it be hey let’s get Jesus
[00:06:00] more in school if Nate Landis was running for a school board or something would you run on that ticket well I think I make a bigger difference outside
[00:06:07] of the political fray because it’s pretty clear that when you get connected
[00:06:13] in in politics you’ve got to appease some special interest to get somewhere and then once you arrive then you’ve got
[00:06:20] to pay back those that help get you there and and I like being sort of a political and and solutions-based with
[00:06:27] with the work that I do and I I think I would I would purposely run on on a
[00:06:34] ticket of problem solving and trying to solve specific issues and find soup
[00:06:41] we’re ordinate goals that that both sides can work on and get together and I think we can all agree when went safer schools and we all want kids to achieve
[00:06:49] and we all want kids to be able to be all that they’re capable of being and I
[00:06:55] think I enjoy maybe too much fun doing what I’m doing now to dive into politics but there are a lot of real problems
[00:07:01] we’re trying to face as a society and I want to be at the table with politicians and school board people and pastors and
[00:07:08] other leaders in the community to try to solve those so we’re looking for people that have their the best interest of
[00:07:15] kids at heart and yeah and hopefully they can approach it without being divisive and you are what’s interesting is you
[00:07:21] are doing stuff that and I want our listeners to hear about what you’re doing because I think it’s phenomenal and I think it’s a real-world example of
[00:07:28] what can actually be done when you just stop talking about things and just start doing and it’s a blessing to hear what
[00:07:35] you’re doing with urban youth collaborative but before we go there when I previously had you on the show we
[00:07:42] have been discussing that you actually were dealing with a lawsuit there was a person who was trying to get all the
[00:07:47] Bible clubs a D the San Diego Unified School Club the San Diego Unified schools and can you update us on how
[00:07:54] that’s gone and how has that cleared up and is that all yeah so it’s been
[00:08:00] resolved and just to clarify there was not a lawsuit coming at us but a parent
[00:08:05] complaint from a very well-connected lobbyists parent that raised that legal question of whether it’s okay for kids
[00:08:12] to have a student like Club on a campus and so they were trying to make it sound illegal that’s where the legal questions
[00:08:19] came in but fortunately the law and the Lord were clearly on our side the only lawsuit actually was from the seventh
[00:08:26] graders at a particular middle school whose club was illegally banned for six
[00:08:31] months they had to threaten a federal lawsuit against San Diego Unified School District in order for the district to do
[00:08:38] the right thing and allow the club to reopen so I was proud of these kids with braces and they’re their first couple
[00:08:46] months in seventh grade first introduction to middle school you had like yeah welcome to middle school and
[00:08:52] by the way the dish it’s gonna try to bully you and and run out the clock on the school year and
[00:08:59] hope you just give up so these kids heroically had to submit five different versions of the application because
[00:09:06] their school was ground zero for this issue that the district was trying to
[00:09:11] just force and scare the students and administrators into not allowing campus
[00:09:19] clubs that were religiously based so just quick quick review the kids submitted five versions of the app and
[00:09:25] each time they turned it down one time it was because they didn’t have enough faculty advisors and you only need one
[00:09:31] they had one and the school made him get two they went out and got an extra one and then the next time they turned it and they said well it’s not on official
[00:09:37] school letterhead and then the kids said well the reason that was the case is because you didn’t allow us to receive
[00:09:43] the official application you purposely withheld it so they turned one in and then they finally put it on the right
[00:09:49] letterhead after they got it turned it in again and this time they said you’ve got some penmanship and penmanship
[00:09:55] errors and some typos and this it was it was handwritten so every middle school application in the county I think has
[00:10:01] some exact lemon chip errors you’re a teacher so you and I can understand that so that they turned in and again and
[00:10:07] then the next time the parent said on the inside the school said looks like there’s some adult handwriting on this document we can’t
[00:10:14] accept that so finally they turn it in a fourth time then the that time it came back rejected again because they they
[00:10:22] were very clear at this point they crossed out the word Christian in the Christian Club application and then they
[00:10:28] crossed off the word Jesus Christ in the club purpose statement that the kids had come up with Wow and so then these
[00:10:34] parents were trying to be really really patient and they wanted to make sure they weren’t jumping to conclusions and
[00:10:40] then once it came back I think that was the fifth version of the application actually and so by the time that came
[00:10:46] back they said look this is just plain and simple religious discrimination there’s no other way to address it
[00:10:53] there’s nothing else to do so they had to decide at that point do we just let our club die and roll over or do we push
[00:10:59] back and so they retained the same lawyer that does pro bono work for our organization and then Dean Broyles yeah
[00:11:05] Dean Broyles and it’s just on the show a little while ago good good guy very thankful for him and so he
[00:11:11] was willing to take their case on and after stalling for almost six months six
[00:11:17] days later the district groped back and said please be advised the club application has been approved they’re
[00:11:24] allowed to meet that’s all they answer to unfortunately is the threat of force
[00:11:29] instead of just doing the right thing from the beginning yeah so we’re thankful that the kids had the audacity
[00:11:35] to continue pushing back and the resolve to push forward even when others were
[00:11:40] trying to discourage them and then it also I think involved IND student leaders throughout our city yeah I want
[00:11:48] to catch up on this but I got to come up on here on a break here so stay with us we’re gonna be right back I’m with Nate Landis with urban youth collaborative

[00:15:14] traffic accidents being the only one greater and that was a fantastic interview very encouraging even though
[00:15:21] it’s a depressing subject but very encouraging my guest today is Nate Landis and we are talking about urban
[00:15:26] youth collaborative if you haven’t heard of his ministry it’s absolutely phenomenal there’s all kinds of ways you
[00:15:32] can get involved uyc org is that right you I see you I see org is Nate’s
[00:15:38] website if you want to get involved and they are now on 97 schools I have Nate
[00:15:43] on the air maybe a year ago a year and a half ago somewhere around there and and we were just talking about the lawsuit
[00:15:50] that’s now we’re not lawsuit but they the whole controversy are we allowed to talk about the school that it was or
[00:15:56] anything now is that I think we can you yeah Caray a junior high school right is the one I actually attended that is did you
[00:16:02] really yeah how yeah so funny and and so when I heard about that in the news I was immediately interested in what what
[00:16:10] in the world is going on here I don’t remember any controversy back then but but so now I’ve heard that there’s gonna
[00:16:16] be a book forthcoming about this whole issue too is that true that’s right yeah I’m finishing a book called God wants his kids back and that subtitle if
[00:16:23] schools of thought to reach a lost generation and obviously the the subtitle is a play on words to encourage
[00:16:31] churches to take advantage of the opportunity to support their students that want to share the good news of
[00:16:38] Christ in schools because like we were talking about earlier these are dark times people are looking for hope and there really isn’t any solution for the
[00:16:46] change of a human heart other than Jesus and you can try to legislate things and you can put boundaries and barriers
[00:16:52] around and and I think we need to as a society but ultimately we want to see hearts changed and the
[00:16:59] only way to do that is through Christ working somebody and and his supernatural transformation that only he
[00:17:05] can bring yeah and so I think that’s important what you’re saying there as we approach this issue and there are there
[00:17:11] are Christian teachers there are Christian administrators I was told by Eric Brewer that 50% of administrators
[00:17:20] and teachers claim to be Christian so there’s a lot of opportunity to influence and influence but a lot of
[00:17:26] people are a little bit of you know have a little bit of fear about okay am i crossing any legal lines writer and write and this now do you um do you work
[00:17:33] with teachers and administrators in that regard is urban do elaborative yeah we are all dependent on having a faculty
[00:17:41] advisor at every club that student-led if we do a facility rental agreement we don’t have to have a faculty member
[00:17:46] involved we always welcome that but the clubs that are student-led during the lunchtime or after school have to have a
[00:17:52] faculty advisor there they can’t teach and preach so to speak but they’re helping to facilitate the meeting in
[00:17:59] terms of making sure everyone’s safe and everybody’s following the rules and having a good time yeah and then they
[00:18:06] can be supportive of the students but the kids have to really take the lead and I think what a lot of churches and
[00:18:11] students don’t realize is that there really are robust legal freedoms for students that want to talk about the big
[00:18:18] issues of life and talk about faith on a public school campus they don’t lose their identity when they step on to a
[00:18:24] school there’s not some wet/dry vac that sucks out all of who they are and then
[00:18:29] they have to go through the day and then they get it all back at the end of the day yeah because no one else is going to school devoid of all of those
[00:18:35] commitments that they have and I think a public school is a wonderful place to make good conversations happen and hash
[00:18:43] out what you believe and and if you know where you stand you can respectfully and persuasively present your case yeah
[00:18:50] without becoming hostile yeah I felt like when I was in school it was great because I got to hear so many different
[00:18:57] perspectives that I hadn’t heard I was kind of out of my bubble right oh my my friends the people that I agreed with
[00:19:02] and it gave me the opportunity to bounce ideas off them so what do you think about this and what do you think about that and
[00:19:07] really help to develop my own thinking about hey you know what is truth absolutely how do I come to it to know
[00:19:12] truth and those sorts of questions you know so that’s very interesting and the
[00:19:18] title of your book again God wants his kids back this way when you say God wants his kids back obviously the title
[00:19:24] infers that somebody took his kids so what do you what are you saying there as
[00:19:29] it pertains to you know reaching the kids yeah I’m thinking of it from the perspective of a father and when I was
[00:19:36] first I’ve got five kids now I told you earlier and I like to come away from the
[00:19:41] house and do radio shows with you because a moment to breathe right right tell our listeners so they can pray for you yeah so I’ve got five kids under the
[00:19:49] age of 10 and three are mine to our foster kids that my wife and I just took in and so okay you guys know how to pray
[00:19:55] for Nate that’s what I’m listening out there yeah please do he’s got a full house and penis on earth okay for his
[00:20:00] wife on our toes and on our knees yeah and it’s been a fun adventure but when I
[00:20:06] was first a dad for the very first time on April 19th 2008 my son Russell was
[00:20:11] born and it was the greatest day of my life I was crying looking into his eyes and making all these commitments to him
[00:20:17] and two hours into the best day of my life two nurses came rushing into the delivery room and they slapped an
[00:20:23] electronic ankle bracelet on my son’s ankle and they said mr. Landis while you are holding your son here in this
[00:20:29] hospital don’t take a wrong turn because if you do go down the wrong hallway with
[00:20:34] your kidney your arms we’re monitoring his every move electronically and this entire hospital facility will immediately go into lockdown this was
[00:20:41] right here in San Diego County so I was thinking wow this is intense my kids only two hours old and he’s already on
[00:20:46] parole like I failed as a father immediately so I asked him what happened why ward of the state why did you guys
[00:20:53] put any electronic ankle bracelet a baby LoJack on my kid’s ankle yeah and they
[00:20:58] said the nurse told me one out of two thousand kids in California gets stolen from hospitals and I might I’ve done
[00:21:04] research and and I’ve actually found you know one out of two hundred thousand was one site and then another was you know
[00:21:11] so rare that one one source said since 1983 in our whole country there have
[00:21:16] been less than 200 abductions and so you look at that and say there’s obviously a problem or people
[00:21:23] won’t be doing something about it sure and I’m glad hospitals have taken it seriously to say on our shift losing one
[00:21:29] kids entirely unacceptable yeah the reason the book title is phrase the way it is is because if you look at kids in
[00:21:35] public schools and compare youth group attendance to school attendance and you give every kid who’s ever come to a
[00:21:41] youth group or smears sneeze near by the church credit for being saved which is a generous assumption yeah you you realize
[00:21:47] we’re losing nine out of every ten kids and so I’m looking at that saying if California’s hospitals with a much less
[00:21:56] statistical problem are willing to take definitive action when will the church step up and say we’re willing to do
[00:22:02] something about the kids that aren’t going to hear the gospel otherwise absolutely if we all retreat to home
[00:22:08] school and we all retreat to private school I understand the doctrinal purity concerns I understand the the influences
[00:22:15] and the curriculum that we may not be supportive of as Christians chair but the vast majority of kids are swimming
[00:22:21] in the public schools and we can’t pull out all the way or else there’s no hope to get them back my guest today is Nate
[00:22:28] Landis and he is an expert on ministering to kids in public schools he’s been doing it for more than 12
[00:22:33] years now so stay with us we’re gonna continue to have this conversation I’m gonna look over some of the texts here on facebook we’re screamin live please
[00:22:40] stay with us we’ll be right back [Music]
[00:22:49] [Music] hi this is Kevin Conover will you please donate to educate for
[00:22:54] life so we can share the truth of God’s Word with kids in public schools you can donate online at donate to EFL
[00:23:01] 0rg the Bible used to be read in public schools on a regular basis prior to the
[00:23:06] 1960s but today most kids are completely clueless when it comes to the content and the historical and scientific
[00:23:12] accuracy of the Bible please help us by donating online at donate to EFL RG hi
[00:23:19] this is Jason hall president of team home loans a branch of synergy one lending I just wanted to take this
[00:23:25] opportunity to thank Kevin Kahn over for the profound impact he’s had on mine and my wife’s spiritual life as well as
[00:23:31] being an incredible teacher while our kids were his students his knowledge and passion have taught us all how important
[00:23:37] it is to be defenders of our faith it’s our honor and privilege to support Kevin and his show is our sincere hope and
[00:23:43] prayer that you will continue to learn to be defenders of your faith through Kevin’s radio show and through his educate for life teachings thank you

[00:24:31] the proclamation of the gospel how do
[00:24:41] you think you can get to heaven more information go throughout all ages com
[00:24:47] like us on Facebook or visit us at YouTube and throughout all ages thanks
[00:24:56] again for tuning in to educate for life I’m your host Kevin Conover my websites educate for life dot o-r-g and my
[00:25:03] website is all about a defense of the Word of God so I’m an apologetics teacher I’ve been doing this for 11 years and my heart breaks for the kids
[00:25:10] that don’t get to hear the good news of Jesus Christ and the evidence for the truth of the Bible and so Nate and I are
[00:25:16] kind of a very similar in our hearts brothers from another mother here in a
[00:25:22] sense that he’s directly in the public schools and I’m teaching kids in a private school about the stuff that they
[00:25:29] need to hear but I’ve been into the public schools I was just at Mount Miguel in one of your groups FCA with
[00:25:34] Jason yeah I heard about that yeah and it was great and the kids it was it was
[00:25:39] very interesting to me you know where they’re coming from I had a lot of thoughts leaving there and everything
[00:25:45] and where they’re at you know my feeling the impression I got was hey these kids
[00:25:50] really are dying for a relationship and they’re dying to be connected to somebody right that cares about them and
[00:25:57] there’s a lot of good information I have to share about the truth of God’s Word but they need to know hey somebody loves
[00:26:04] me and cares about us right and so when you’re talking about hey I’m waiting for these churches to get involved what
[00:26:09] you’re talking about is hey we need the relationship right absolutely I’ve heard it said well that kids won’t care what
[00:26:15] you know until they know how much you care exactly and the word became flesh in Christ God could have just rained
[00:26:21] Bibles out of the sky in lots of different languages throughout history but Jesus became flesh and that’s what
[00:26:27] the Bible was written about was his interactions with people and healing the sick raising the dead feeding the hungry
[00:26:33] forgiving the sinner he did all of those things through the context of a relationship yeah that’s that’s what I love about public schools
[00:26:40] is because you you are forced into this sea of all these different people from different backgrounds and and you’ve got
[00:26:47] to figure out how to survive make some friends give and receive love and yeah and graduate and and figure it out and
[00:26:54] it’s a great microcosm for life and in preparation for for the real world and I
[00:26:59] do think that public schools also provide kids who have faith an opportunity for it to really grow and be
[00:27:06] defined yeah because if you live in a bubble with good intentions the danger of the bubble is illustrated by the
[00:27:13] biosphere experiment I think it was the University of Arizona they created a dome for plant life and they had ideal
[00:27:20] soil conditions optimal sunlight they had the right temperature bugs and weeds
[00:27:25] were eradicated it was it was like the if a dream for plants yeah I was anything Green was supposed to thrive
[00:27:32] and flourish and and I think it was well intended but what happened which surprised the scientist is almost all
[00:27:39] the plants in the biosphere died it wasn’t for lack of water it wasn’t for high soil quality it wasn’t for plant
[00:27:46] food being gone they were missing one thing wind wind pushes against the plants and
[00:27:52] forces them to take a stand and make their roots go deep and so public school kids who do stand for Christ and have
[00:27:58] faith because there’s all these other forces blowing against them there’s there’s the opportunity to do drugs I
[00:28:05] remember when I first started UIC at a school near my house I asked all the kids how many of you
[00:28:13] guys if you want to know exactly where to get drugs as soon as the bell rings and and the school is done for the day
[00:28:19] yeah 60 kids at Lincoln High School raised their hand and said I know exactly where to find drugs yeah
[00:28:25] the week before one of my other pastor colleagues asked about the same number of kids at Moore’s high school how many
[00:28:31] of you guys know exactly where to find your dad how many of you live with mom
[00:28:36] and dad in your house same house all together every night nobody raised their
[00:28:42] hand Wow so there’s all these forces blowing against kids and kids have to figure out how to stand yeah because
[00:28:48] easier to find drugs and dads in our communities yeah and to be able to say I
[00:28:54] really am gonna believe in something there’s all these different religious ideas there’s kids that believe all
[00:28:59] these different lifestyles are true and you’ve got to make a stand and say I really am going to put my roots down
[00:29:05] yeah and and that’s where I think we we grow in our faith when there’s something pushing against us I don’t think you
[00:29:11] grow in your faith alone I think salt and light only works in groups lights photons travel in groups
[00:29:19] yeah salt crystals need to be in a group you can’t transform meat with just one it’s
[00:29:25] probably gonna get absorbed by the meat but if you have a group of kids who can be salt and light together and and put
[00:29:31] their roots down deep that’s when you really do see a small group of kids transforming a school and I’ve got a
[00:29:36] story I can tell you when we have time but I’ve I’ve seen it happen and I know that Christian kids in the public
[00:29:42] schools will not only be salt and light but their own faith will be straight yeah and I you know I I mean my own
[00:29:48] testimony growing up I went to Point Loma high school and talked about the wind blowing man it was it was hit very
[00:29:54] adversarial yeah I was very confident in my faith and outspoken but the more you speak up the more people speak back to
[00:30:01] you okay talk back yeah and so it was very it definitely made me stronger but
[00:30:06] I mean I’m sure and even my own concern is it’s one thing to have some wind blow on you but it’s another thing to have a
[00:30:12] hurricane just rip you heart and that’s what we see is a lot of the kids they’re just getting ripped apart and so the
[00:30:19] there’s got to be a solution here that’s you know somewhere in the middle because I I would be concerned for my own
[00:30:27] children to go I’m we homeschool now yeah but it’s not because I want to abandon the kids in the public schools I
[00:30:33] desperately 90 percent of kids go to public schools right it’s extremely frustrating to me that I’m thinking okay
[00:30:39] I have literally a hundred and twenty students this year that I get to teach yeah there are 23,000 students in East
[00:30:46] County High Schools and so I look at that and I think to myself okay well if I get to share the
[00:30:51] truth with a hundred twenty kids praise God right right but there is no way we
[00:30:56] can just think that it’s going to be okay if these other kids don’t get to hear the gospel right get the
[00:31:02] to actually hear the other side of you know a neutral kind of moral agnosticism
[00:31:09] versus hey there are there’s absolute morality there’s lots of evidence for the truth of God and the Word of God
[00:31:14] right they just don’t hear that right right right so so you’re making a
[00:31:20] difference absolutely you went from last time I talked to you 80 schools around 80 now you’re up to 97 right so people are
[00:31:27] stepping out so what’s what’s the next step for you well I think continuing to
[00:31:32] let kids know that they’re the ones who will decide the spiritual destiny of their friends and in helping them to
[00:31:39] feel that urgency and that passion just as strongly or more I want them to be
[00:31:45] concerned about that even more than their prom date and who’s gonna win the football game on Friday night or now
[00:31:50] it’s basketball on baseball season but what what does it look like to be in the game spiritually as an adult I can’t we
[00:31:58] do a lot of work with coaches and I’m a chaplain at several teams and it’s fun on the sidelines on Friday night this
[00:32:04] was and I was actually going to ask you about I ask you about chaplains yes in schools you’re not a paid chaplain no we
[00:32:11] are we are not allowed to be on the payroll because then we would be an agent of the state per se but we can’t
[00:32:16] be a volunteer but what about what about the fact that the military actually hires chaplains yeah I mean they’re not
[00:32:23] quote an agent of the state right in the public school though the the deal is
[00:32:28] that you can’t you can’t be a school official and do any kind of religious
[00:32:33] but is that just a double standard or a static yeah because it cuz I’m thinking to myself hey you’ve got kids struggling
[00:32:39] with depression absolutely aside you’ve got you’ve got kids that that kid that did the school shooting in Florida yeah
[00:32:45] you know they they found out he made a 9-1-1 call a few months earlier asking for help asking for help
[00:32:51] yep exactly and yet if there were chaplains in the school that were readily available to be able to not
[00:32:58] quote proselytized but be there for the kids when they reach out and have help they have
[00:33:04] problems I want to know about yeah I don’t know if there’s a God who cares about me and loves me right I mean I I
[00:33:09] struggle to understand the rationale that would say we don’t want that right there’s no other solution and that’s
[00:33:16] so funniest they don’t want you know they being people that would argue against the work that I do yeah
[00:33:22] they they wouldn’t want us speaking into these situations but then my question will always be well what else do you have to offer yeah I’ve performed a
[00:33:28] funeral for a kid who died of sit he had I’m sorry he had a kid who was nine weeks old on a football team here in San
[00:33:36] Diego County lost his son to SIDS and they called me because I was the only
[00:33:41] person they needed to turn to and and I’ve been able to perform weddings for football coaches and funerals for
[00:33:48] players sons and all these things and my question would be what else would you have to offer in those moments of joy
[00:33:54] and heartbreak if you don’t want God’s side of the story involved and I’ll
[00:33:59] share what this probably good time to share this at hey hold on one sec Nate we’re to be continued yeah that’s a
[00:34:06] great teaser right right you’ll never believe what we’ll say next

[00:36:22] there’s got to be welcomed to educate for life I’m so glad you’re listening
[00:36:28] today my guest today is Nate Landis with urban youth collaborative if you want to learn more about his ministry its you
[00:36:34] YCO RG and we are so blessed to have Nate here in San Diego doing the
[00:36:40] ministry he’s doing he really is the fuel behind the fire 97 campuses in San
[00:36:49] Diego and a few in Mexico now have campus Bible clubs because of the
[00:36:55] efforts of Nate Landis and the people that are working with him there’s I know you’ve got a huge team that’s working with you now growing a team if you would
[00:37:02] like to join his team please reach out UIC org honestly these are the kids that
[00:37:08] are the future of our country right the kids that grow up and make the laws they’re the ones that become policemen
[00:37:14] firemen they become you know the bosses they run the companies and where they’re
[00:37:19] at with Christ is gonna affect where our country goes and so if this is not just eternity and eternity is most important
[00:37:27] but it’s also the life we live now right Christ said I’ve come that they may have life and have it to the fool so let’s
[00:37:33] pick up with the story that you oh yes thanks Kevin so recently at Moore’s high school there were a lot of issues with
[00:37:40] kids pulling fire alarms and then triggering a mandatory evacuation out to the athletic field yeah kids figured
[00:37:46] this out that they could create oh this just down there teaching god I’m bored or or in this case it was I want to jump
[00:37:53] somebody there were a couple reprisals going on where kids were getting on other kids nerves and then some you know
[00:38:01] back and forth stuff going on so they picked a couple targets and realized it’s hard to defend them if there’s all
[00:38:09] this pandemonium as as the transition is happening out to the athletic field so the principal’s going around I’m not
[00:38:14] sure what to do or where to turn or what the solution is so the students from this faith Club this is where I think if
[00:38:20] you’re built on the foundation of Christ yeah you can withstand even a hurricane because you’re doing it together and the
[00:38:26] the parable Jesus tell us about the house built on the solid foundation the winds come the rains blow and beat
[00:38:33] against the house but the house built on Christ is firm enough to stand so these kids said we’re not
[00:38:38] afraid we’re gonna go out into the quad after our Bible Club they support the
[00:38:43] club there on Thursdays at lunchtime student-led during non instructional time voluntary to attend those are the
[00:38:50] three legal variables that have to be in play so these kids gathered in the quad
[00:38:55] and a hundred and fifty of them one hundred and fifty Christian students Christian students and people that
[00:39:01] realize prayer was a solution to trauma and trauma on campus and violence so
[00:39:07] they’re all holding hands in this circle they invited me that day because they had planned it in advance and I was just blown away
[00:39:12] teachers were watching administrators were watching and if you weren’t in the circle Kevin you were watching this yeah
[00:39:18] and if you didn’t believe in it you at least realized it’s probably better than anything else if you’re agnostic / can’t
[00:39:25] hurt ya right if you’re an atheist prayer definitely can’t hurt because you’re just talking to the air but maybe
[00:39:31] it could help so everyone was there and I never saw this before the vice-principal brought a megaphone out
[00:39:37] to these three student leaders who were in the center of this circle they had coordinated the whole thing and
[00:39:43] three bold female leaders took turns praying for God’s presence power and
[00:39:48] peace to fall on the campus Wow and as I’m taking photos the principal came up to me and I had never met her
[00:39:55] before but I had heard good things about her but I didn’t know where she stood with respect to all of this yeah and so
[00:40:00] she said I saw you taking photos at my school yes yes I was she said could I
[00:40:06] have those please I said yes yes you can I wasn’t sure what she was going on yeah and then finally she says to me I’d like
[00:40:13] to put them on the school website because I think this is so fantastic Wow and I went wow right cuz
[00:40:20] you and I were just talking earlier about we can have I want to applaud her you can have lots of different perspectives about the work that I do
[00:40:25] and so it was interesting so I said to her this this is wonderful news I said
[00:40:31] I’d do this for a living but let me just give you a little advice it might be good to mention that it’s student-led
[00:40:37] prayer and happening at this school yeah and then their head football coach that we work with closely was standing there
[00:40:43] too and he said it might be good to mention that it was voluntary prayer cuz his his athletes were all in the circle
[00:40:49] but he didn’t want anyone to think that he had forced them yeah yeah and and of course love requires freedom and nobody
[00:40:54] is gonna be forced by God to follow him either and we don’t want to do something different so anyway this was my quote of
[00:41:01] the year last year the principal looks back at me and says I’d love it if someone got up in my grill and told me student-led prayer was a bad idea
[00:41:07] because then I would ask them to propose a better solution for the problems we’ve been having on our campus right so the
[00:41:16] adults didn’t have the answer the kids did and they were the ones leading and so I was able to see them stand against
[00:41:23] this tide of drama and trauma at the school and they were the ones stepping out and making a difference so
[00:41:28] student-led prayer can’t be stopped and it’s really exciting to watch that is we’ve had kids after football games one
[00:41:36] of the students at that same high school was a very strong leader and had the composure to pull both teams together
[00:41:42] for prayer after their football games it started on a day when a very troubled
[00:41:48] kid from an opposing school broke another kid’s femur guy was six foot five after a place stomped on is yeah
[00:41:56] that’s like breaking a baseball bat and then he ripped to other kids down with face masks where he should have been
[00:42:01] ejected but it didn’t happen and so instead of strike counter strike
[00:42:07] escalation yeah it’s normally happened yeah this male leader from from the
[00:42:12] football team pulled both teams together afterwards and let everyone in prayer the coaches listened and watched but the
[00:42:19] kid was the one battling nominal and it’s been well publicized and it’s something that just can’t be stopped and
[00:42:25] shrimpie because it makes a difference so my question for you is is is with that kind of activity that you’re seeing
[00:42:30] would you say that that is because of these Bible clubs in the schools or or
[00:42:37] is this I guess when I’m asking yes is is urban youth collaborative is FCA yes
[00:42:44] you work with FCA we do that we partner with FCA closely so are you guys together as is Christ moving through
[00:42:50] these groups to facilitate this kind of leadership because that’s not typically something a kids just gonna rise up and
[00:42:57] be right hey let’s pray yeah it doesn’t happen by accident and this particular young man who led the prayer time for the football
[00:43:03] team had been through three years of discipleship he came to FCA camp and then there’s a track 1.0 after camp that
[00:43:10] UIC takes kids through it’s a simple four lesson study on your relationship
[00:43:16] with God how to have a devotional time how to confess sin how to let the Holy
[00:43:21] Spirit work more and more actively in your life developing fellowship and closeness with God yeah and then the
[00:43:26] second year was a Bible study track for discipleship we had him watch some
[00:43:33] videos from the urban youth workers Institute on just basic fundamentals of the faith everything from apologetics which you
[00:43:40] like yeah and starting with creation all the way through and and so that guy had been through all of those things and
[00:43:46] really started to move from taking responsibility for his own spiritual growth to advance and say I’m concerned
[00:43:52] about the spiritual growth of others I’m concerned about the culture of my school and that’s when you begin to see if that’s the tipping point yeah yeah and
[00:43:59] then young people are realizing I don’t just have to be waiting to serve God when I’m old I think that’s the problem
[00:44:05] the churches get into as saying youth of the Church of tomorrow and yes they are but if we wait till tomorrow to give
[00:44:10] them real leadership opportunities well no tricks left today I abscess that is I couldn’t have said it better myself
[00:44:17] we’ll be right back my guest today is Nate Landis with urban youth collaborative you I cor G please check
[00:44:23] out the ministry it’s a fantastic opportunity to make a radical different in the schools if you’re concerned about school shootings the real change is
[00:44:29] going to come when the church begins to get more involved in the schools that’s when we’re going to see heart change not
[00:44:36] just threatening people with punishment not that that’s bad but we want to see
[00:44:41] heart change in the students we’ll be right back

[00:46:32] you can donate online at donate to e FL o RG the Bible used to be read in public
[00:46:38] schools on a regular basis prior to the 1960s but today most kids are completely clueless when it comes to the content
[00:46:45] and the historical and scientific accuracy of the Bible please help us by donating online at donate to e FL o RG

[00:46:59] opportunity to thank Kevin Kahn over for the found impact he’s had on mine and my wife’s spiritual life as well as being

[00:47:17] prayer that you will continue to learn to be defenders of your faith through Kevin’s radio show and through his educate for life teachings thank you

[00:47:29] [Applause] okay welcome to educate for life this is
[00:47:35] the last segment we have here with Nate Landis and just a reminder May 15th I
[00:47:40] know it’s still a ways away but May 15th we’re putting on a huge event educate for life is along with Eric Bureau and
[00:47:45] Danny Ray if you don’t who Danny Reyes he’s an incredible illusionist who’s also an evangelist he shares the gospel
[00:47:51] all over the world and we’re putting an event down in Rancho San Diego we’re gonna have a huge event for teachers
[00:47:57] parents administrators all to encourage them kind of a lot of what Nate land is
[00:48:02] the saying right here getting involved with ministries like his his with FCA with all the different opportunities
[00:48:08] there are – we just had on Mary Rothman with the sunshine clubs that’s at the
[00:48:16] the lower education levels so we’re really trying to encourage parents teachers administrators students all
[00:48:24] those who love Jesus to get more involved in the schools we need these kids to know about the Lord Jesus Christ
[00:48:30] and we want to put an end as much as is possible before Christ returns to school
[00:48:36] shootings and the kind of hostility that we see a lot of times in the schools we
[00:48:41] want to rescue kids teach them about Jesus Christ and give them the peace that surpasses understanding that only
[00:48:47] comes through a relationship with Christ so please join us that’s May 15th you can register at EFL Danny Raycom EFL
[00:48:55] Danny Raycom love to have you join us so Nate tell us about what you do you do
[00:49:01] this I believe every year yes by the ninth year that we’re gonna do project 25 the name comes from the parable of
[00:49:07] the talents that Jesus told in Matthew chapter 25 where the rich man goes away and before he takes his trip he gives
[00:49:13] his wealth to three different stewards and they’ve got to put it to work for the good of others so it’s fun for me
[00:49:20] Kevin I feel sort of like a drug dealer for Jesus every spring because we give away 50 this year it’s 53 we open it up
[00:49:27] to any of the 97 schools that we are supporting student-led clubs at and
[00:49:33] instead of just receiving information we want kids to take what they’ve learned and put it to work to bring
[00:49:39] transformation so there’s five schools in Mexico and just over forty five here in the states that are
[00:49:46] it’s exciting yeah we have a partnership with a group called metamorphosis that’s doing really phenomenal school
[00:49:52] assemblies and trying to bring positive direction to kids that are in danger of
[00:49:57] being steered in all different places all different trajectories so project 25
[00:50:02] is a way to end your strong instead of saying man is it summer vacation yet I can’t wait to just run out the clock on
[00:50:08] the school year these kids have to go on to the website and sign up to participate they get a hundred dollar
[00:50:14] mini grant is that you I see dot yeah there’s a UIC link there but they’ll so
[00:50:20] PR o j25 org is where the kids actually sign up for project 25 and so it’s
[00:50:28] actually a perfect time to talk about this because these these starter kits are going out all over San Diego right
[00:50:33] now to all the different schools and kids have to take the funds read the parable of the talents we don’t want the
[00:50:40] money back all we want is a 90 second YouTube video that tells the story of what they did to make a difference and then we have a red carpet award
[00:50:47] celebration on May 11 so right before your event it’s going to be at City View Church and we play the winning videos we
[00:50:53] have a worship night and we honor kids who have done the most incredible work we give out trophies to 1st 2nd and 3rd
[00:50:59] place for kids that have done incredible stuff in the name of Jesus so they’re not just praying but they’re putting
[00:51:05] their prayers into action and they’re even becoming the answer to their prayers by letting God use them with
[00:51:11] homelessness with beach cleanups we’ve had kids at Hoover High School a couple years ago rescued some slaves from
[00:51:18] warlords in Sudan so it’s having an impact all over the world and then locally in City Heights there was a
[00:51:25] group of kids at Wilson middle school last year they won first place first time a middle school kid ever won first
[00:51:30] place their team found out in their student body of a thousand kids there were 60 homeless students in City
[00:51:37] Heights and they said that’s unacceptable if we’re praying the Lord’s Prayer and we’re looking at the parable of the talents putting together what we
[00:51:43] have and using it for the good of others we can’t accept this yeah and so they built a clothing closet
[00:51:49] called Clarks corner Monroe Clark middle as I said Wilson middle I met Monroe
[00:51:54] Clark middle my apologies Clark’s corner and they they basically took
[00:52:00] some clothes and they they took $100 mini-grant they got turned into $1,300
[00:52:05] Wow and started a clothing closet for their friends in City Heights so instead
[00:52:11] of having a handout these kids get the dignity of going shopping and picking out something for themselves they don’t
[00:52:18] have to pay for it but I get to go shop in their store and it was a project that these kids dreamt of because they were
[00:52:24] dreaming of a better world that is amazing it’s so it’s so inspiring to see how you know when somebody gets on fire
[00:52:31] for Christ then they they light somebody else’s heart and then they like that’s right so it gets contagious and then
[00:52:37] before you know what a whole community can be radically jet rushed through what God is doing through a few people that’s
[00:52:42] right at the awards show sometimes the youth pastors in the community even if they haven’t participated in fragile 25 will bring
[00:52:49] their kids because they want to show middle school and high school kids what’s possible yeah when young people step up and make a difference because
[00:52:55] it’s one thing to hear about it yeah it’s another thing to see it in real time and say wow look what these kids
[00:53:00] are up to yeah so last year thirty-one thousand hours of volunteer service from young people went out into our community
[00:53:06] and the homeless people noticed the kids in their schools noticed and then mayor Faulkner every year does a mayoral
[00:53:12] Proclamation as well which says may whatever our awards night is this last
[00:53:17] year was made the 11th we’re hoping you can do one for me I’m sorry May 12 last year May 11 this year and he proclaims project 25 Day in
[00:53:25] the city of San Diego and so kids are able to say wow Jesus notices the people were serving they’re noticing our friends are noticing and the mayor said
[00:53:32] we were doing a good job yeah and this is what the Bible says I mean it says do your good deeds in front of men that they may praise your father in heaven that’s right and one’s got to get all
[00:53:38] the glory exactly I love what you said too about how you know without the wind those plants all died that’s right and and we
[00:53:45] all need that a certain amount of wind to make us stronger on our roots go deeper right and to seek the Lord and
[00:53:52] for you parents we’re listening you know whether you’re screaming live or or not I just want to encourage you in that too
[00:53:59] that’s important for Christian kids because I speak you know around a lot of different churches and youth groups and I often will have parents go hey I
[00:54:06] raised my kids Christian I did this this and this and they’re gone that’s right right and so we want to do
[00:54:13] everything we can to prevent that from happening and part of that process is allowing our kids you know in a safe way
[00:54:22] to be able to go out and make a difference and see the Lord work through them through something like project 25
[00:54:27] right it’s exhilarating for kids to realize that God can change lives not just others but more so even the lives
[00:54:34] of the people that are serving more than being served and in two months kids are able to do some really meaningful
[00:54:39] projects and we want them to say look what God did with me for two months what if I gave my whole life to living for
[00:54:45] others yeah and you know the whole school shooting issue this should be more there should be a much bigger focus
[00:54:51] on what you’re doing in the schools as a solution to the school shooting problem
[00:54:56] because I agree when you touch a kid here and a touch a kid here and a touch a kid here and you rescue a kid from
[00:55:02] loneliness here who’s isolating himself right then what happens is the more
[00:55:07] touches you have the more the kids you have who are reaching out to somebody else around them the less chance you’re
[00:55:13] gonna end up with somebody that’s gonna be you know a shooter or something like that that’s right I think if you’re
[00:55:19] screaming at the darkness that’s one way to do it but if you light a light then the darkness is taken care of as well
[00:55:25] and there’s something to say yes to and live for instead of just identifying ourselves by what we’re against yeah or
[00:55:30] like you said before you know guns in the classroom may be a solution to a
[00:55:35] symptom but there’s a much bigger and ultimately we don’t want a bunch of people with they have to live in in
[00:55:41] prison gates and right and and you know walk them through metal detectors and
[00:55:47] this is our lives here more police on campuses right we want to be free but you can’t be free if you don’t have a
[00:55:52] governor on the heart and the governor on the hardest Jesus that’s right that’s the only way to bring ultimate changes from within absolutely Nate thanks for
