[00:02:52] have known each other for how long now maybe four five years five years okay and the way we met was I was teaching a

[00:02:59] class out at Skyline on apologetics that that’s what I typically do and what

[00:03:05] ended up happening was we were talking about starting a group to go and share

[00:03:11] the gospel and so dick was one of the few people that decided that he wanted to do that and so since then every month

[00:03:19] almost every month we’ve gone down to the beach when we’re available and

[00:03:24] shared the gospel passing out hotdogs and waters to people down at the beach and giving out imitation to church and

[00:03:31] so I thought it would be a really cool show to do when we talk about sharing

[00:03:36] the gospel because for a lot of people it’s something that strikes fear into their hearts when they think about telling somebody else about their faith

[00:03:43] and dick why don’t we start off can you give us a little bit bit of background on yourself how you grew up as a

[00:03:49] Christian and so forth and then what we’ll pick up from there good first of all I didn’t grow up as a Christian

[00:03:55] anything but okay well as a little kid you know my grandmother was Catholic and

[00:04:01] so we would go to church with her on Christmas and church with her on Easter

[00:04:08] and and that was about the extent of it and I remember one time my mom coming in

[00:04:13] grabbing us were about eight nine years old and we went off to a Lutheran Church for a Vacation Bible School and that was

[00:04:19] the extent of my Christianity as a kid okay and but as a growing up

[00:04:26] with a Catholic influence all my all my friends and playmates when I was a little kid we’re all Catholic my

[00:04:31] grandmother’s Cass Lake neighbors are all Catholic and and I was worried

[00:04:38] because I had heard them talking and if I should die am I going to go to heaven or am I gonna go to hell and I was I was

[00:04:45] really worried about that and so I was about 12 years old and buddy and I were

[00:04:52] out hiking happened to be on New Year’s Day by the way and he was telling me

[00:04:58] that yeah I have to do is go to the go to the priest confess your sins and

[00:05:03] they’re all forgiven you’re good to go I said it’s that easy he says well he

[00:05:09] says until you sin again and I said well how often can you go you can go every

[00:05:15] day if you want bingo I’m home free I just go every day you wanted to make

[00:05:22] sure I wanted to make sure I mean she was I yeah and I thought that’s it man I

[00:05:28] went home I told my mom I said mom I’m gonna become a Catholic you get your sins forgiven every day that’s hilarious

[00:05:35] and she put a kibosh on that real quick no you’re not your dad says you need to

[00:05:41] wait till you get older and I was really disappointed yeah and I used to go to bed at night I only knew one prayer now

[00:05:48] I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep if I should die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take

[00:05:54] oh and I would say a scary scary prayer I would say that that’s the only thing I know yeah and I would say that every

[00:05:59] night and sometimes two or three times thanks yeah sure yeah this isn’t

[00:06:05] somebody something you want to gamble with right don’t want to make this happen exactly yeah exactly and and then

[00:06:13] I came under the influence of a young fella when I was 16 years old and he invited me to a Bible study I

[00:06:20] thought great go let’s go and so I went with him now was this here in San Diego

[00:06:26] no this back in Illinois okay this back Illinois I’m 16 years or I grew up back in Illinois Peoria and so I went to a

[00:06:32] Bible study that night and there was another fellow there and he says would you like to become a

[00:06:39] Christian sure yeah and and so I he led

[00:06:46] me through a prayer prayed the prayer and that was that not that this is too easy I mean yeah I mean is this did a

[00:06:54] new lightning didn’t strike I didn’t feel all warm inside or anything like that you know so though that I know

[00:07:01] later yeah it comes by faith yeah then I drifted away from the Lord for a long

[00:07:07] time until we got married and then we got married and I knew I knew how I was supposed to live haha

[00:07:12] Janice I sure wasn’t living the way I should live between between that time when I accepted Christ and when I got

[00:07:20] married now now when you got married where you still in Illinois or no no by then by

[00:07:25] then I had come to California okay San Diego ah and I met my wife here in San Diego

[00:07:30] excuse me and she was from Michigan she’d only been out here a couple months I’d been here a week I met her a week

[00:07:41] after I got here the only girl I dated in California and eight months later we were married and last week we celebrated our 55th

[00:07:48] anniversary hey that’s awesome congratulations that’s great that’s

[00:07:53] great shout out to Janice right yes yes well hey so you know so as you became

[00:08:01] more involved in your church when did it become and you’ve gone a skyline Church now for how long I’ve been a member

[00:08:07] there since May in 1970 okay that since before I was born so so so oh that’s a

[00:08:15] long time yes now when you were going to skyline church when did you become impressed that hey it was important that

[00:08:21] you should be sharing your faith and you should be you know kind of living out your Christianity reaching out to others like people reached out to you well it’s

[00:08:27] kind line the pastor’s going back to pastor butcher and then and then John Maxwell yeah and now Jim Garlow always

[00:08:34] preached you know sharing your faith and and it was just one of those things if you’re Christian you need me sharing

[00:08:40] your face yeah I read description sharing your faith and you know like a lot of Christians it just kind of you

[00:08:47] know went by me but then I’d get out and I would especially driving down the freeway rush hour time

[00:08:53] tonight yeah you see a gazillion lights and I think I wonder how many of those people

[00:08:59] are going to be in heaven mm how many of those people know Jesus mm-hmm you know because that that verse comes back to me

[00:09:06] all the time where Jesus says you know why does a gate and many are gonna go

[00:09:11] that way but narrow is the gate to heaven yeah if you go that way yeah and that has always been on you know it

[00:09:18] just it just constantly rings in my head yeah never did anything about it it was your influence that got me off

[00:09:25] the dime Wow and yeah I said that there

[00:09:31] was this high school Bible teacher out

[00:09:36] of Christian high or both my kids graduated from and he’s going to be talking to the high school kids on a

[00:09:42] Sunday night oh okay they better go check this guy out and you made the announcement that next week

[00:09:51] you’re gonna start a Sunday School class so I’ve been there ever since and that was September of 2013

[00:09:58] wow that’s crazy man and you the thing that you kept hitting on is we’re not

[00:10:04] just gonna come in here and get warm fuzzies and hear the gospel and gwon our merry way we got to go put it into

[00:10:09] action we had to go share of faith and back then it was kind of hit and miss we go to a shopping center here or down the

[00:10:16] Bell Bell Park or back to a shopping center and that was pretty much for that year

[00:10:22] it wasn’t until until September of 2014

[00:10:28] that we went to the beach and it became a weekly every week or everyone every on

[00:10:33] yeah every month yeah and we decide which month you know yeah which week I’m sorry second week of a month first week

[00:10:41] third week and I don’t know how I selected about yeah active the third week of the month yeah and we try to stay on that schedule once why we have

[00:10:48] to change the last two months have had to change yeah yeah so for those of you listening for those of you online and

[00:10:54] everything please comment let us know your experience with sharing the gospel if you’ve ever shared the gospel of some

[00:10:59] anybody the reason I I wanted to do this program is because I feel and I think it’s obvious you know

[00:11:05] that there has been a decline in the amount of people that are out there sharing the gospel and you know there’s

[00:11:11] a variety of different reasons the fear of speaking to anybody speaking in front

[00:11:17] of people baring your heart you know what’s very important to you to a stranger just the

[00:11:24] fear of rejection these are all fears that we have but dick and I today want to encourage you and that that there are

[00:11:32] opportunities and ways to share the gospel that decrease the fear that you don’t have to always be afraid and that

[00:11:38] there’s opportunities to overcome those fears and I wanted to read this quote from this is from George Barna calm this

[00:11:45] was in November 2017 and he says here a Christianity in America is going through a time of substantial challenge the

[00:11:52] church at large is not likely to grow in the future unless some fundamental changes in practice are made citing one

[00:11:58] such change Barna noted fewer churches emphasize and equip people for evangelism these days and the results

[00:12:04] are obvious and undeniable the implications of ignoring gospel outreach especially among children who are the

[00:12:10] most receptive audience to the gospel are enormous all the truth church growth strategies in the world cannot

[00:12:16] compensate for the absence of an authentic transmission of the good news of what Jesus Christ has done for

[00:12:21] Humanity and he goes on to say here parents who have more influence on the

[00:12:27] spiritual choices and development of their children than anyone else are ill-prepared these days to lead their

[00:12:32] children to a genuine life-changing relationship with Jesus worse yet surveys conducted by ACF eyerly err this

[00:12:40] year revealed that most American parents are not interested or engaged in helping their kids to know Jesus personally and

[00:12:46] so you know that’s a big part of what my ministry is trying to do is help people encourage people show people the

[00:12:52] incredible need and significance of learning to share the gospel in a way

[00:12:58] that is not awkward or offensive or whatever the case that diminishes fear

[00:13:04] and so that’s what dick and I are here talking about now my website is educate

[00:13:09] for life o RG and specifically that’s what it’s geared towards I have classes all over the

[00:13:14] the Internet there that are showing you how to share your faith as well as giving you answers to the questions that

[00:13:20] people have about sharing their faith right I heard when I was in college I took a Toastmasters class and have you

[00:13:27] heard Toastmasters yes yeah they teach you how to speak in public and they said one of the biggest fears people have is

[00:13:33] public speaking in fact it’s the number one fear that Americans have is public speaking but they said that the way you diminish your fear of public speaking is

[00:13:41] to know your material well so that if if you know your material well that’s gonna cut your fear in half because you’re

[00:13:48] comfortable talking about it right and so I think a big part of what you and I are trying to do and what the class is

[00:13:53] aimed at doing is helping people to be better equipped to be able to answer

[00:13:59] people’s questions about Christianity how do you know God exists how do you know Jesus actually died on the cross

[00:14:04] and rose from the dead these sorts of questions and but surprisingly those questions don’t come up too often when

[00:14:11] we’re out sharing the gospel but give people more confidence so we’re coming up on a break here we’re gonna be right

[00:14:17] back and we’re gonna talk about what dick has experienced because he was extremely fearful sharing the gospel and he’s

[00:14:25] gonna share with you where he came from and how how things are going in his life as far as sharing the gospel is concerned so stay with us we’re gonna be

[00:17:47] you take us back to when we first started and what was going through your

[00:17:53] mind as you we started that first opportunity to share the gospel take us

[00:17:59] back to how you were feeling let us bless people here how you were feeling okay before we started going to the

[00:18:04] beach that first year that you were teaching the class we were kind of hit and miss when we were where we were

[00:18:11] going to share the gospel and I thought I gotta go I gotta go I got to do this to get over this fear I I want to go do

[00:18:18] this so I can get over the fear and it took a long time and be quite honest

[00:18:23] with you I’m not still completely over the fears are fair you know yeah however the the more we have done it the

[00:18:32] easier tasbih come and you have shared that with me you said tell me long time ago he said dick I didn’t share like

[00:18:38] this all the time yeah cuz I’d say you grew up to five or six big guys standing on the beach and go right up with him

[00:18:43] start talking I’m like you’re talking about a football game yeah and I thought Lord that’s that’s what I want to do

[00:18:50] yeah yeah now I remember one time you told me that on the way down to the beach you are driving down there and as

[00:18:57] you are driving you you are like I don’t want to go I want to turn around right now unfortunately it wasn’t just boy we’ve

[00:19:05] been doing this down the beach what four years now you know that’s 48 trips to

[00:19:12] the beach and most of those it’s like I don’t want to do this I don’t want to do this I don’t feel like going down there

[00:19:18] yeah and it’s just it’s it’s got to be satanic what else could it be you know I think it’s kind of a normal

[00:19:24] fear that people have fears you know fear of uh you know I mean I think the one of the drives of the human

[00:19:31] heart is to be accepted it’s to be welcomed it’s to be appreciated and when

[00:19:37] we think about hey I’m gonna share with somebody about you know heaven and all and I don’t know we we it probably is

[00:19:43] spiritual you know there’s probably a spiritual war there going on but I think part of it is also just the natural

[00:19:48] human desire to be loved and accepted you even this past Saturday yeah I didn’t want to go it wasn’t that I was

[00:19:55] afraid of sharing yeah I just didn’t feel like doing I didn’t want to do it once I got down here we got talking to people yeah I was I was glad we were

[00:20:02] there yeah and then you you add a new dynamic when you show up and and so I’m

[00:20:07] senator thinking what’s the matter with me that I didn’t want to come down here this is a lot of fun

[00:20:13] yeah there’s a lot of fun perfect we had one of the guys in our class I don’t know if I should say his name or not but

[00:20:18] anyway he came down in and cooked hot dogs for us yeah when we first started doing the hot

[00:20:24] dogs and he said there’s nothing like I thought it’d be I said would you think it’d be you say I thought people would

[00:20:29] be mad and angry and yell at you and cuss yeah yeah I think people have in

[00:20:37] their mind what we see in the media a lot which is some guy holding up a sign that says turn or burn you’re going to

[00:20:43] hell and naturally people are angry at somebody who is constantly condemning

[00:20:48] them and so what happens is I think it creates this fear that hey that’s gonna

[00:20:55] be my experience and so my question to you dick is you know you’re sometimes

[00:21:01] you’re afraid and I’m the same way sometimes I’m I’m not usually very afraid anymore like I used to be but but

[00:21:08] how did you overcome that like what what what enabled you to push through that

[00:21:14] fear and even today it allows you to push through that fear and make that decision to go out and share down at the

[00:21:21] beach I think two things number one just kept doing it yeah just every month even though I

[00:21:26] don’t feel like going down there I just go yeah I go and and and then the

[00:21:32] material that we use you know material that Ray Comfort has his approach makes it so easy yeah makes it so easy and it

[00:21:42] was just doing it yeah and today it’s

[00:21:47] not so much fear well maybe not down to beach anyway yeah see and I wanted to do this at the beach so that that would

[00:21:53] become part of my life wherever I am yeah something you do that’s a little more difficult yeah you know why I don’t

[00:22:00] know there’s been a number of times when we go to a restaurant now tell the server hey we’re gonna we’re gonna thank

[00:22:05] the Lord for our food is there anything we can pray for you yeah and I’ve had some wonderful experiences but I don’t do it all the

[00:22:11] time mm-hmm yeah that’s a good question I think and for those of you listening

[00:22:16] dick just referenced Ray Comfort and Ray Comfort is really he’s the one that for

[00:22:23] me enabled me to start getting more and more comfortable sharing the gospel if I when I was in high school I I did share

[00:22:30] the gospel I was pretty outspoken about my faith it was just my personality but I wasn’t

[00:22:38] very effective and I was kind of just I just let it let it let it happen I

[00:22:43] hadn’t practiced or anything and I didn’t nobody ever taught me really how to share the gospel and I really believe

[00:22:48] that to be trained makes a big difference and when I first was turned on – Ray Comfort

[00:22:54] and essentially all he’s doing is taking Jesus method of sharing the gospel and he’s breaking it down and showing you

[00:23:01] what you’re doing which is you’re you’re showing the person their need for a savior so I anybody listening if you’re

[00:23:08] interested in evangelism and sharing the gospel one of the struggles I had early on was I would I would say to somebody

[00:23:15] would you like to get saved and they would say saved from what and I would say well saved from hell and they would

[00:23:22] say why would I go to hell and they’d say I I’m a good person I I don’t do

[00:23:28] anything bad and I’ve never murdered anybody or you know and I don’t steal and and I’d think to myself well that’s

[00:23:35] a good point and I’d say well do you still want to get saved and they’d be like nah and and

[00:23:40] I was like well that was that wasn’t very good and so what Ray Comfort does is he shares the law with them and

[00:23:47] during this radio program I’m gonna just last Saturday dick and I were down at

[00:23:53] the beach and we actually had a recording where I actually had the opportunity to share the gospel with a

[00:23:58] young guy named Lexus and he ended up accepting the cry accepting Christ and he we’re gonna share that within this

[00:24:06] radio program when it airs eventually so make sure you tune in when it when the

[00:24:12] full program is done it’ll be up on YouTube too but essentially what you’re doing is you’re sharing you’re demonstrating that they need to be saved

[00:24:18] from their sins and that they really are a sinner and it’s very very effective but at the same time you’re not being

[00:24:25] offensive and you’re not condemning people you’re giving them the hope of Jesus Christ the gospel is called good

[00:24:30] news for a reason because we need the good news of Jesus Christ which is that you’ve got to get out of jail card and

[00:24:36] that get out of jail card is Jesus Christ and so that I really appreciate

[00:24:42] Nick what you’re saying that just going and and continually going not giving up has slowly begin to diminish the fear

[00:24:49] yes and so I guess for anybody listening that’s my encouragement to you too is don’t give up because the first time you

[00:24:55] go out there it’s often Erfurt nerve-racking a lot of things can can happen that you don’t feel like wow I

[00:25:01] didn’t do a good job I didn’t represent Christ well I was embarrassed and if we

[00:25:06] give up so quickly then you know the devil’s won but the reality is is that if we treated the

[00:25:13] rest of life that way I mean how far would we get right you you get to your

[00:25:18] work that the job doesn’t go that well and you give up on the first day or you go out to try out for basketball the

[00:25:24] first practice doesn’t go that well you feel clumsy and awkward and you go well I must not be good at basketball and

[00:25:30] that can apply to pretty much anything we try to do whether it’s photography or art or dance or a sport all of us are

[00:25:38] awkward and clumsy when we initially start but there were Awards of persevering and enduring are great and

[00:25:45] when we come back we’re coming up on a break here I’m gonna share with you the impact that us going we’ve we’ve had

[00:25:52] anywhere from four to eight people on average going down to the beach now for

[00:25:58] how many years dick for years we started in September of 2014 so for four years

[00:26:05] once a month four to eight people down at the beach literally on a Saturday for two hours no more than two hours this is

[00:26:11] ten to twelve on a Saturday two hours out of an entire month dick has been keeping track of how many Flyers we’ve

[00:26:20] handed out how many hotdogs we passed out how many waters we passed out how many gospel tracts and invitations to

[00:26:25] church we’ve given out and I’ve got to tell you it’s just amazing to me how

[00:26:31] that consistent small effort over time adds up to a huge impact so when we get

[00:26:37] back Dick’s gonna share that with you and I’ve got some more encouraging tips about how to share the gospel that is

[00:26:43] inoffensive it is not awkward and makes it way way easier to be comfortable sharing the

[00:29:38] have to have a huge event at church but we can make this a regular part of our life being that light and that salt that

[00:29:46] that Christ asks us to be so my guest today is dick house um he’s a great friend of mine and I’m blessed to have

[00:29:53] him involved in ministry we do ministry together and for four years now we’ve

[00:30:00] been going down to the beach passing out hot dogs we buy the hot dogs by the waters put the waters in a cooler and

[00:30:07] then pass them out so dick why don’t you tell us um what are the stats on on how

[00:30:14] many how many tracks and so forth and everything we passed out okay starting

[00:30:21] with the the very first year we were giving out roughly ninety eight tracks a

[00:30:26] month every time we’d go and then and then our next year after that our second year we were up to 169 as an average and

[00:30:35] then it dropped 122 and so far this past year dropped to 132 but we give up

[00:30:40] primarily two tracks one of them is like a business card to Skyline Church and the other is one or a comfurts cards and

[00:30:46] we try to make it super easy and like you said is anywhere from four to eight

[00:30:52] people who show up as an average at six to seven over the year and I I find that

[00:31:01] that you know what you just said here a little bit ago about Toastmasters

[00:31:07] knowing your material defeats you you get to half the fair yeah and that’s the

[00:31:14] biggest thing that I hear from prep firm Christians most I you know III don’t know enough and and I

[00:31:20] have to say I was give me that to being afraid of what if they’re gonna ask me hard questions that I can answer talk

[00:31:26] about lack of faith in the Holy Spirit know what’s interesting to me is that you know the Bible says that God will

[00:31:33] prepare you to be able to speak to people mm-hmm but what’s interesting is that the holy that Christ says that the

[00:31:40] Holy Spirit will remind you of what Christ taught so if we’re not taking the

[00:31:46] time to become more knowledgeable about God’s Word learning about the truth of God’s Word and how to defend it well

[00:31:52] then the Holy Spirit has nothing to remind us of so I feel like I definitely

[00:31:58] often will look back on a time where I got to share my faith and I go man the Holy Spirit really guided me in that

[00:32:05] discussion but at the same time does that mean that we don’t spend time getting better and learning how to share

[00:32:12] our faith and defend our faith well no absolutely not right so but anyway so you were saying

[00:32:17] that one of your biggest fears was hey I don’t know enough so what would you say to somebody who said I don’t know enough use the Ray Comfort material

[00:32:25] yeah it’s it’s very intuitive and when I hand a person a cheat with with how to

[00:32:31] walk through it it’s a whole typewritten sheet and that can be intimidating yeah but it’s very intuitive one step to the

[00:32:37] next you know how you go right through it and that I think gets rid of some of the fear yeah it gets rid of gets rid of

[00:32:44] a lot of the fair actually yeah absolutely you know and to tell you a funny story one of the things that Jim

[00:32:51] Garlow did is his – he had a guy come out by the name of Bill Faye and his

[00:32:58] ministry is how to share your faith without an argument and I used part of that and part of Ray Comfort material so

[00:33:05] I’m on back when I was while I was working I’m on an airplane and I start sharing with this guy and I went right

[00:33:11] through all the steps and I got to the question if you were to die right now would God let you in his heaven yeah I’m

[00:33:19] a pretty good guy and of course we I’m not going to take time now but we got around that and I finally got to the

[00:33:26] question would you like to accept Thanks he said yeah I think I would and

[00:33:33] I’m yeah because I’ve never had that

[00:33:40] experience yeah but I got my composure back and we prayed a prayer and I said

[00:33:48] yes I could have I could have flown the rest of that that’s funny um that

[00:33:55] reminds me of the first time I shared my faith it was one of one of the guys that was on my wrestling team in high school

[00:34:01] and we were at lunchtime we were just having a discussion and I wasn’t even at all I wasn’t even planning to share the

[00:34:08] gospel with him but he specifically asked me because he knew I was a Christian I always prayed before all my

[00:34:14] matches and he started asking me well you know how do you get to heaven how do

[00:34:20] you know you’re gonna go to heaven and and I started I started you know going through this with him and he he

[00:34:27] basically was pulling it out of me and I and he he gets to the point he goes I

[00:34:34] want to become a Christian and I was kind of like whoa wait what is happening right now and so I ended up praying with

[00:34:41] him but I was totally you know caught off guard and unprepared but over time you know God definitely you know he

[00:34:49] brings opportunities as you step out in faith for you to share your faith so you

[00:34:54] know with that story Kevin I think God was probably in heaven laughing thinking Kevin you’re gonna share your faith now yeah I’ve had that

[00:35:03] happen several times where I was rizona or something you know I don’t want to do this but but uh God has been gracious so

[00:35:11] tell us again we passed out all these how many total have we passed out how

[00:35:16] many total tracts yeah you know I don’t have I don’t have that total down the first year we passed

[00:35:22] out a thousand seventy five and then 2026 then 1463 and right now we’re at

[00:35:29] fourteen forty three for this year so we’re looking at well that’s like what every five or six thousand five close to

[00:35:37] six thousand oh my gosh that we have given out know what so I wanted to say here is

[00:35:42] 6000 tracks that’s literally 2 hours a month for 4 years and that’s 6000 tracks

[00:35:49] that now what that is essentially a seeds 6000 seeds now that God we don’t

[00:35:54] know where they’re going or wow they’re being used but we know that the Bible is very clear that God’s Word does not

[00:35:59] return void right we know that those seeds are having an impact somewhere along the line right and what were you

[00:36:05] gonna say you’re gonna say well we’re just gonna say I I keep stats on the tracks yeah I don’t keep track stats on

[00:36:11] the like the waters yeah the waters we give out is anywhere from 125 to 225

[00:36:16] yeah this last week we gave out 190 595 waters 195 water yeah and and it was

[00:36:24] super hot and we gave out a hundred and sixty five of those in the first sport yeah we need some more waters we needed

[00:36:32] to slow down yeah and and then hot dogs usually about 50 48 hot dogs they come

[00:36:40] eight in a package to every hit six and we’re with the earliest we’ve ever run

[00:36:45] out it’s like quarter twelve fifteen minutes early okay so now now what’s also for those of you listening I want

[00:36:52] to encourage you about something really important here I used to go out to places in San Diego like Balboa Park

[00:36:58] sometimes I went down to Mexico I’ve been down to downtown Ocean Beach I’ve been to the mall and

[00:37:05] sharing the gospel and something I found along the way is what is probably known

[00:37:11] somewhere is the principle of risk reciprocity and that is that when you

[00:37:17] give something it makes it a lot easier to get something and what I mean by that

[00:37:23] is this when you give somebody a hot dog or you give somebody a water your your

[00:37:30] and then you’re asking for their time right because you’re asking for them to listen to you and that’s taking up their

[00:37:36] time if you go up to somebody and try to take their time but you have nothing to offer them well it’s gonna be a lot more

[00:37:43] difficult for them to want to give you their time if you’ve not offered them

[00:37:48] anything and in my opinion this is one of the greatest most effective

[00:37:54] ways to remove the the awkward and the fear barrier that we face often is

[00:38:02] through the principle of reciprocity and that doesn’t have to be with just hot

[00:38:07] dogs and water that can be with doing a neighbor a favor right going out of your way to weed your neighbor’s lawn that

[00:38:15] can be going out of your way to write a nice card to somebody it’s thanking them

[00:38:21] all of these things are ways you can give in order to have the opportunity to

[00:38:28] share your faith and this is something God has really built into the human psyche I believe is that when we see

[00:38:35] love in action there’s an appeal to it I believe two of the strongest apologetics

[00:38:40] strategies or or essentially ways that God has designed mankind is to respond

[00:38:47] to truth and to respond to love so when a person hears truth they naturally

[00:38:53] respond well to it okay we don’t respond well to lies because we know somebody’s trying to take advantage of us but when

[00:38:59] we tell the truth people respond to it and that’s why knowing the truth of God’s Word is so important because

[00:39:04] people respond naturally to truth and the other thing that people respond naturally to because I believe God has

[00:39:10] built this into us is to love see love is the opposite of the devil the devil

[00:39:16] is full of hate and he’s full of lies God is full of full of love and truth and so the significance here is this is

[00:39:23] that when we experience or see love in action there’s a natural human magnetism

[00:39:30] towards it and so what we want to do if we want to be very effective evangelists

[00:39:35] and we want to diminish the awkwardness and the fear is we want to use love and

[00:39:40] truth in in tandem and so I personally I

[00:39:46] almost never go witnessing unless I have the opportunity to give somebody something I’m not saying you shouldn’t I

[00:39:53] I mean I’ll witness to somebody on a plane or I’ll witness to somebody in Starbucks if God provides the opportunity but what I’ve found

[00:39:59] especially if you’re new to sharing your faith what I found is one of the easiest

[00:40:04] ways to get more comfortable is by giving something out or offering somebody

[00:40:10] something through that principle of reciprocity is that it has that been

[00:40:15] helpful for you as well yeah well it kind of breaks the ice yeah they’re kind of breaks the ice it gets you talking with them it gets them

[00:40:22] talking with you it kind of kind of the the what’s I know what you’re saying

[00:40:29] that all the guards or the objections or yes are kind of down yeah yeah yeah I

[00:40:34] know last Saturday we were out at the beach and one guy goes okay what’s the catch here right he he goes is the water

[00:40:40] laced and I never heard that one before sorry yeah we’re down here trying to poison people at the beach but one of

[00:40:46] the things I do I try to anticipate that yeah yeah I say hey we got free water free hat already it’s really free and

[00:40:52] ice and I was saying in a light-hearted way say well you know nothing in life is free and I give him the card we’re from

[00:40:58] skyline shirt yeah here’s some material from from Ray Comfort and I said that

[00:41:05] see that’s the extent of the cost here other than that it is free and by the way do you have any spiritual beliefs

[00:41:11] yeah exactly and you know what’s interesting to me too is a lot of people say well how do

[00:41:17] people respond down there you know in four years I’ve had one negative response in the entire time we’ve gone

[00:41:23] there in four years one negative response and and that guy he was he was offended that I was sharing the gospel

[00:41:29] with him and I and I said hey I’m sorry I hope you have a wonderful day and and I walked away now that was the extent of

[00:41:36] it other than that I’ve even had if you can believe this I had an atheist one time I’m standing there at the table

[00:41:42] this guy walks up now I didn’t know he was an atheist at the time but this guy walks up he gives me 20 bucks and I said

[00:41:48] no no no the hotdogs are free and and he said no I’m giving it to you as a donation and and I said really I said

[00:41:54] thank you now I assumed he was a Christian because you know that’s who would donate to where his share in the

[00:42:00] gospel and I said what church do you go to and he said oh I don’t go to church I’m an atheist and I said what I took a

[00:42:06] double take you know you’re giving me 20 bucks to share the gospel and you’re an atheist and and I asked him that and he

[00:42:12] said you know what he said there’s a lot of people out here yelling at people and you guys are doing a really cool thing

[00:42:19] I mean how you’re giving people hotdogs and stuff like this he said I think that’s really cool and he said I just I just wanted to

[00:42:25] give you guys 20 bucks and what that showed me here is again is that love is very very powerful and given given

[00:42:32] people free hotdogs and water is a tangible way to love people and it immediately makes more people receptive

[00:42:39] to what you have to say so I encourage you to in your own community in your own church body to start an evangelism

[00:42:46] ministry where you do so by reaching out to people and offering them something

[00:42:53] for their time to be able to share the gospel it’ll it’ll have a huge impact we have one more segment left we’re a dick and I are

[00:46:30] so my guest today is dick callosum we’ve been talking about witnessing and sharing your faith I wanted to read this

[00:46:36] excerpt from Christianity today this just came out this was an article published in July 2018 and it’s it says

[00:46:44] just do something it’s by Ed Stetzer and he makes a really interesting point

[00:46:49] here he says instead of people replacing older evangelistic strategies with new strategy strategies that they feel

[00:46:56] better fit our time and cultural context we seem to have replaced these old strategies with a new level of angst now

[00:47:04] angst I think what he’s saying here as he’s saying rather we we often say hey this evangelism method doesn’t work or

[00:47:10] this doesn’t work or that doesn’t work and instead of coming up with a better way to reach out to people we’ve just

[00:47:16] developed more fear and kind of anxiety over evangelism and he says here

[00:47:22] ultimately that means evangelism doesn’t get done for example evidence of lessening interest in evangelism can be

[00:47:28] seen in the huge decline in the number of evangelism conferences that are hosted and attended we just finished hosting

[00:47:33] the amplify conference which is now the largest event evangelism conference in North America focused on outreach and

[00:47:39] evangelism such conferences used to fill huge venues so much has changed people

[00:47:44] like to explain a way that it climbed by saying people have turned to online tools but we all know that they’re not all engaged in evangelism training

[00:47:51] online either what should we do given this situation what should we do some people are throwing up their hands in

[00:47:57] the air and saying well we can’t do evangelism anymore that’s the wrong answer and then he goes on to give a

[00:48:03] story about DL Moody and a woman came up to moody and said I don’t like the way

[00:48:08] you do evangelism he asked her how she did evangelism and when she answered that she didn’t he replied I like the

[00:48:15] way I do evangelism better that better than the way you don’t do evangelism which I thought was hilarious but here’s

[00:48:23] the thing what we can’t give up on evangelism I mean the reality is is we

[00:48:28] want to look this this issue in the face and we want to we want to tackle it head-on not be afraid it’s the elephant

[00:48:34] in the room the stats on the amount of people that share their faith in the church is very very low it’s something

[00:48:41] like less than 5% of people share their faith per year and so well the the

[00:48:47] declining numbers of Christians in America that we see are the natural byproduct of not sharing our faith

[00:48:53] anymore so what we want to do is is face our fears and I’m not saying you know I

[00:48:59] know that some people they just are so afraid of sharing their faith my

[00:49:05] encouragement to you is start by giving people give to people right I had a

[00:49:11] student who I was challenging my students to share the gospel I said what can you do for somebody that will allow

[00:49:17] them to give you the opportunity to share your faith and what this girl started doing was once a week she bought

[00:49:23] all that she worked at the mall in a clothing store once a week at the mall she bought everybody a coffee and pretty

[00:49:32] soon people were like why are you buying us coffees and as soon as somebody says that well what’s the immediate response

[00:49:37] well God loves me and I’m trying to be a loving person like he expects me to Jesus Christ loved me I’m trying to love

[00:49:43] others like Jesus loves me and so all and they’re coming to you rather than you happen to go to them and so my

[00:49:49] challenge is find a way to give to people and dick and I were just talking

[00:49:55] about this off air what is this known as it’s known as love right and so that can

[00:50:01] you explain to me what you were explaining off the air well in the Bible in in the Greek language there’s four

[00:50:06] different words for love in in the English language we have one word for love and we use it for everything and

[00:50:12] many times we use it wrongly I love my car well there’s no way in the world you can love your car car can’t love you

[00:50:18] back yeah and but the majority of the time and the scripture is talking about agape

[00:50:25] love what is agape love that’s a servanthood love something that you do for somebody else without

[00:50:30] expecting anything in return for instance one of the things that I always do whether I’m in a checkout line at the

[00:50:37] grocery store no matter where I am I look for that nametag I look for that nametag journalist you go through the

[00:50:43] grocery line they get through checking out the person from and they turn to you and they say hi and they start checking things out and I look over there and I

[00:50:49] say well hi Kevin how you doing today yeah how you doing today yeah and their

[00:50:57] whole countenance changes just that they did almost melt yeah I did it the other

[00:51:03] day in Costco yeah in this lady I was explaining what how I do this and she says are you a

[00:51:09] motivational speaker I said no she said are you a pastor no are you a deacon no are you an elder no

[00:51:18] I said I’m just a guy who loves Jesus and trying to love people I said what’s the most important word in the world to

[00:51:23] you her name happen to be sandy I said it’s sandy isn’t it she says yeah I said just

[00:51:28] trying to love people the way Jesus would love people and she says well where do you go to church I said skyline

[00:51:35] she’s I go there too that’s fantastic yeah and it’s so true you know as we

[00:51:42] begin to become more comfortable sharing the gospel and giving to people then more and more of those opportunities

[00:51:48] will rise and so I don’t want this show is meant to encourage you it’s not meant

[00:51:53] to discourage you this show is meant to tell you that it’s possible Dick

[00:51:59] dick do you mind me asking how old you are on the air here I’m 77 he’s 77 years

[00:52:04] old okay I’m telling you right now that’s this is amazing to me 77 years old he said that you know four

[00:52:10] years ago is when he really in earnest began to start sharing his faith so it’s not too late for you it’s not too late

[00:52:17] for dick is not too late for anybody and the fact of the matter is is God works through us and it helps us overcome

[00:52:22] these fears and as we as we persevere through our fears that fear will

[00:52:28] diminish I can honestly say that I used to be very fearful about going out and sharing the share of my faith but I am

[00:52:35] not afraid anymore I go down to the beach and to be honest it’s one of the the most fun things I can do I actually

[00:52:43] enjoy it and the reason that I enjoy it so much now is because I’ve seen the way

[00:52:49] people react to authentic sincere love and and I can’t tell you how many

[00:52:56] stories I have of it really dramatically impacting people we have a prayer banner

[00:53:02] up at the beach and one of the guys that we were giving out a hot dog to I started talking to him and asking him

[00:53:08] about his life and he told me that he was on parole but that he had been denied released from prison ultimately

[00:53:16] and tomorrow the following day he was going back to prison today was the last day he could be with his little girl and

[00:53:23] he was going to prison for 10 years I didn’t ask him what he did or what happened or anything but you could see

[00:53:28] he was just torn apart by the fact that he was going back to prison here he is at a sunny day at the beach with his

[00:53:33] little daughter and not too the next day he’s going back to prison and I got to pray with him I got to share the gospel

[00:53:39] with him he accepted the Lord right there and I got to encourage him that even in prison God can use him and I’ve

[00:53:45] been into Donovan state prison and and seen the guys in there and seen the light in their eyes because of the hope

[00:53:51] of Jesus Christ it’s a hopeless place without Jesus but with Jesus you have a Hall the hope in the world and I had

[00:53:58] another situation at Balboa Park where a guy actually told me a kind of

[00:54:04] indirectly he said that tomorrow he was planning on committing suicide and I got

[00:54:10] to sit down with him for 45 minutes we talked and I said do you think that God brought us together in order to let you know that

[00:54:16] he knows what you’re going through and that he loves you and he said yeah absolutely and I said are you still

[00:54:21] going to commit suicide he said no I’m not going to and I actually have that on video I have that conversation on video and so here’s the thing sharing the

[00:54:31] gospel is one of the most radical impactful things you can possibly do I mean it is the thing right it’s the

[00:54:38] Great Commission Matthew chapter 28 and so the fact of the matter is is that as

[00:54:43] Christians we need to look this elephant in the face this elephant in the room

[00:54:49] why you have all these people that know the Bible that believe the Bible that

[00:54:56] trust the Bible are telling their neighbors friends and relatives about

[00:55:01] the truth of the Bible and we have to take this head-on and wrestle this elephant down and and wrestle till we

[00:55:10] find a solution we cannot throw up our hands and say well I guess we can’t do evangelism anymore and so I hope this

[00:55:17] has been encouragement to you there are so many opportunities and you know what Christ said he said pray to the lord of

[00:55:23] the harvest that he would send out more harvesters into the harvest field it’s not that the harvest is it plentiful it’s not that people don’t want to

[00:55:30] accept Jesus I guarantee you that’s not what it is it’s that there’s not enough harvesters out in the harvest field so

[00:55:37] what’s our prayer our prayer is that the Lord would send more harvesters out into the harvest field and that he would enable us to become those harvesters

[00:55:43] that were so afraid to become but that he would overcome our fear that he would be greater than our fear bigger than our

[00:55:50] fear and that we would tangibly show people God’s love not only through what

[00:55:56] we do for them but what we say to them in the gospel amen amen amen

[00:56:02] dick any any comments before we head off where our probe we’re out of time here so come down to the beach the third

[00:56:09] let’s say you’d be the third Saturday of September and we can give you some material to show how easy yeah it is to

[00:56:16] share your faith you don’t have to know a lot 10 a.m. to 12 noon right down at

[00:56:22] the Mission Beach Belmont roller coaster and we’re just south of the roller coast you’re near the bathrooms on the
