How to Navigate the World of Video Games and Social Media — with Duncan Hunter and Cade Hastingsame
The Educate for Life Podcast dives into one of the most urgent questions Christian parents and students face today: how do we enjoy video games and social media without letting them shape our identities or steal our devotion to Christ? In this episode, Kevin Conover brings a biblical worldview to the digital spaces where teens spend hours every day. If you care about Christian education, discipleship, and raising kids with wisdom in a media-saturated culture, this conversation is for you.
Inside the Conversation: Gaming, Screens, and the Christian Home
Joining Kevin are Duncan Hunter and Cade Hastingsame—two high-school seniors who know gaming culture from the inside. They don’t speak as detached critics, but as young men who’ve lived through the pull, the friendships, and the temptations that come with popular games like Fortnite, Minecraft, Counter-Strike, and World of Warcraft. Duncan shares candidly about how gaming became a massive part of his life over the years, including what made it feel so immersive and why stepping back can be harder than most adults realize. Cade adds a thoughtful perspective on how gaming and social media often become escape routes for stress, loneliness, or pressure—especially for teens.
Kevin guides the discussion with balance and biblical clarity. Instead of demonizing technology, he asks the deeper questions: When does a good gift become a master? What does self-control look like in a world designed for dopamine and distraction? How do we recognize the difference between healthy recreation and a creeping addiction? Together they explore the real-world impact of excessive gaming on family life, school priorities, romantic relationships, and spiritual growth, highlighting scriptures like 1 Corinthians 6:12 and Galatians 5:22–23 as anchors for discernment.
A standout portion of the episode tackles the hidden gambling-style economy inside many modern games. Duncan and Cade explain loot boxes, skins, and the “pay-to-play” systems that can quietly train kids to chase rewards the same way gamblers do. For parents trying to understand what their kids are actually experiencing online, this section is eye-opening and deeply practical.
Key Takeaways
- How video games and social media can subtly replace real-life priorities
- The difference between enjoyment and being “mastered” by a digital habit
- Why loot boxes and in-game purchases mirror gambling behavior
- How gaming affects friendships, dating, and family relationships
- Practical boundaries that help teens grow self-control and maturity

We live in an electronic, interconnected world where video games and social media reign supreme. It can be tricky to navigate this world without getting lost in it. Video Game addiction is becoming more prevalent. Parents are sending their kids for treatment and some couples are even getting divorced over it.
Today on Educate For Life, Kevin is joined by Duncan Hunter and Cade Hastings to talk about this subject from a teen/young adult perspective. Both Duncan and Kade have years of experience playing popular games like World of Warcraft and Fortnite.
Tune in for an interesting perspective on video game addiction and social media from two people who have lived it first hand.
This episode first aired on Dec 2, 2018.
How We Can Help You
At Educate for Life, we’re passionate about equipping families to engage culture without being swallowed by it. If this episode resonated with your home, our Comprehensive Biblical Worldview Curriculum can help your students evaluate technology, entertainment, and identity through God’s truth in a structured, age-appropriate way. You may also find support in our Christian Parenting Resources, where we talk about discipling kids in areas like media habits, peer influence, and building healthy rhythms that protect faith.
For teens wrestling with deeper worldview pressures online—questions about truth, morality, purpose, and identity—our Christian Apologetics courses provide a steady foundation. We want your family to enjoy God’s gifts with gratitude, while learning to recognize the moment a gift starts to compete with the Giver.
Here’s a short excerpt from the episode:
- “We want to talk about video games and social media from a balanced perspective.”
- “If you answered yes to six or more questions, it might be something you should look into.”
- “Loot boxes feel like gambling because you’re paying for a chance at something rare.”
- “There’s a time to relax, but there’s also a time to focus on priorities.”
- “Everything is permissible, but I will not be mastered by anything.”

[00:02:44] because they were just constantly playing it and so if you have a kids or
[00:02:50] you know kids you probably are aware of fortnight because it’s such a popular game more than 200 million people have
[00:02:56] registered to play fortnight which has become a billion-dollar business for its creator epic games and some desperate
[00:03:04] parents are actually now sending their kids to rehab if you can believe it for video game addiction and anyway I
[00:03:10] thought it would be cool we actually talk about this in my class at school I teach seniors at Christian high and El
[00:03:17] Cajon and we talked about addictions and I’ve got two guys here today Duncan
[00:03:23] Hunter he is Duncan Hunter well there’s Duncan Hunter senior who was a senator there’s Duncan Hunter
[00:03:28] junior what are you Duncan Hunter junior junior yeah this is the third Duncan Hunter okay sweet
[00:03:34] so Duncan’s here to share with us his experience he’s done a lot of gaming and so uh glad to have him here and then
[00:03:41] Cade Hastings also another student of mine 12th grader about to graduate coming up here in May he is the son I
[00:03:48] just found this out he’s the son Rick Hastings Dick Hastings dick dick Hastings he was 12 – tommy gun he used
[00:03:54] to be 12th in the world of team roping wow that’s crazy cool okay claim to fame there guys wave to the cameras here’s
[00:04:00] the cameras right up here say hi all your fans out there all right this is your maiden voyage on radio on podcast
[00:04:06] so it is anyway why don’t you give us a little bit of background for you to first of all how long have you guys
[00:04:11] Duncan how long have you guys known each other we’ve known each other since about seventh grade but we really started
[00:04:18] becoming friends and what like freshman year maybe some will do a different campuses west and east I’m gonna used
[00:04:23] all my life he’s with the West yeah so I started we chugging like you know become good friends freshman year I think okay cool
[00:04:30] now was war video games a part of your friendship like right off the bat you know that kind of one of the things you
[00:04:36] guys had in common you were like hey guys cool yeah so what games were you guys playing freshman year that’s before
[00:04:41] a fortnight right yeah that was like yeah the basically was that like minecraft a lot of Minecraft
[00:04:47] let’s go counter-strike overall overwatch Xbox you gotta be careful about using acronyms because now our
[00:04:53] listeners know like like audit you know they don’t know the gaming lingo you
[00:04:58] know so yeah Counter Strike global Offensive we mean Cade play that quite often had like a lot of hours on that
[00:05:05] and we played a lot of Xbox I wants my 15th birthday which is like right like a year of us knowing each other really well yeah and then I gone with the Kade
[00:05:13] and hit a lot of human now you’re big you’re big game Duncan was World of Warcraft right yes sir
[00:05:18] okay now what would you playing World of Warcraft in ninth grade I was oh you were okay and were you also Kade I think
[00:05:25] I started sophomore year I believe I got him into it yeah now are you guys still
[00:05:33] playing that game uh currently no past like two months I haven’t had a working computer okay but that’s about a change
[00:05:38] so what about you Kate I haven’t played since summer really because I’ve just
[00:05:47] been busy with school college op stuff like that haven’t really gone around to it yet I played for a law this summer okay okay great
[00:05:53] and show them your bag show the audience our bag Duncan’s got a huge bag you’re holding up for that for the video this
[00:06:00] is world of warcraft if you don’t know what it is and a very very popular game I actually played video games and this
[00:06:06] was one of the games I played also I don’t I don’t play anymore but pretty popular game where’s the lunch box man
[00:06:12] okay Duncan’s got a he’s got a World of Warcraft lunch box as well
[00:06:18] pretty incredible there it is Blizzcon okay now what what’s interesting world
[00:06:23] of warcraft how many subscribers do you think World of Warcraft has now um lose somewhere around twelve million or
[00:06:29] something yeah it’s gone down yeah okay I mean has a fortnight probably right yeah like you know the best image yeah yeah I
[00:06:36] think it’s about around eight million nine million with the new one probably around 11 okay we’re trying it out and a monthly subscription to World of
[00:06:43] Warcraft costs how much $15 yeah depending on what plan you get anywhere from twelve to fifteen bucks a month
[00:06:49] okay my plan is like 60 bucks so if you’re listening you can do the math right so nine around eight or nine
[00:06:56] million people times fifteen dollars a month anybody have a calculator eight or
[00:07:01] nine million what what is that and that’s per month eight or nine million times fifteen per month and I mean
[00:07:10] that’s eighty it just ninety million more almost more than a hundred million a month that these games are making so
[00:07:15] they really know how to make games and so so when you started getting to world
[00:07:22] Warcraft Duncan what what was it that drew you to that game what do you like so much about it I just started playing
[00:07:27] I was very young I didn’t really know like what the game was about yeah and you know I had family to played it and
[00:07:34] uh they don’t they’ve you know they haven’t played it for years but they got me into it
[00:07:39] like I know a lot of a lot of kids nowadays start off on like minecraft or something like that but I start on that yeah and it was just basically a massive
[00:07:46] MMO anyway no I was doing is you know quests and stuff I just kind of ran around doing my thing for like the first
[00:07:52] like three years I played I didn’t know I was doing now what do you like it better did you like it better than minecraft oh yeah
[00:07:58] infinitely what what is it that makes it so much better than minecraft just like the graphics and it’s just so much more
[00:08:04] you can do yeah like minecraft is blocks and you know being PDP it’s like an immersive world it’s just there’s so
[00:08:11] much to do yeah so much yeah they can add so much stuff very easily now do you have friends online too that you play
[00:08:16] that you’ve never met in person that people that you know online I used to yeah two years ago before I had your classes
[00:08:23] in school I had a I had what’s called a guild and woodwork after about 60 people maybe that log on every day and we used
[00:08:30] to do raids stuff like that and hardened PvP I think you actually rated the top level of our server at one point we were
[00:08:37] like on the top 10 list I think yeah now you you were you played a so much that
[00:08:43] you got your ranking was really high on the game yeah that’s pranking you had um there
[00:08:50] there’s a there’s like certain titles you can get with achievements yeah if you PvP enough or like do raid you know
[00:08:56] you know you get like these achievements if you kill of like a mythic boss for example you get like an achievement like mythic the boss name like you get that
[00:09:03] titles and mounts according to that and that I have a lot of those don’t like count okay yeah and PvP toes now so what
[00:09:10] I mean one of the reasons for those of you listening one of the reasons I wanted to have Duncan on is because he has played so much and Duncan give us
[00:09:17] your hours you it logs your hours right now now this this all astonish you it’s
[00:09:23] honest me when I heard it but give us your the hours that you logged on it so
[00:09:30] the hours count up to about 39 thousand five hundred which correlates to about
[00:09:36] four point four five years listening we
[00:09:44] were talking about this in class and when Duncan said this his friend next to him turned next to him and and looked at
[00:09:50] him and said you’re lying he didn’t believe so probably a lot of our listeners are thinking what that’s
[00:09:56] impossible how was that possible I mean I didn’t think it was possible either until I did you know slash game timing
[00:10:01] game yeah on all my characters and found out the total amount of time I want to actually I was curious about whether the
[00:10:08] time was true or not so I went on the website for you know Blizzard yeah and there’s a bunch of people on like the forums saying like like I feel so bad
[00:10:14] about myself I have three or 65 days a game time and they’re like they stopped playing years ago and that just makes me
[00:10:20] think like okay this is this very very real X you have four years of games I’d wow that’s crazy that’s and so so I mean
[00:10:28] what do you think about that offhand does that bother you are you like ass okay I’ve enjoyed my time so you know what what are your thought is it
[00:10:34] bothered me at all actually it’s been a very fun you know four years of World of Warcraft yeah yeah this has been a lot
[00:10:40] of memories and you know it’s kind of weird to say but a lot of memories and just a lot of people that I’ve actually
[00:10:45] you know known come and go on the internet yeah well you know it’s interesting I I mean we want to come at
[00:10:53] this issue from a balanced perspective you know for those of you been following
[00:10:58] my show you know I had on dr. Andrew Doan his wife Julie Doan and
[00:11:04] he was he was addicted to video games and people are now saying that hey you
[00:11:10] can be clinically addicted to video games some people are kind of like no way it can’t happen and so there’s a big
[00:11:15] debate in our culture right now about hey what’s healthy and what’s not if you go online you can hear different perspectives and what are you what are
[00:11:22] your guys’s perspectives on that I mean do you think a person can become addicted to the point where they they
[00:11:29] maybe want to stop playing but in the draw – it is so strong that they feel like they can’t get off off of it
[00:11:35] without help how do you feel about that Duncan and then I’m go to you Kate I mean I mean I was victim to that when I was a kid you
[00:11:42] know and I was eight nine years old I used to wait because I had like a there’s parental controls and what were
[00:11:48] craft so your parent can monitor your playing time yeah and my parents have me on a restriction of five hours a day and
[00:11:53] every day I’d wake up because I you know I was a kid I didn’t have very much like
[00:11:58] school I go to school you’ll come home with two so my dad and just I’d be home onyx and really play sports in
[00:12:03] elementary school yeah and part of junior high so I’d maximize out every day five hours
[00:12:09] five hours five hours I’d wake up on Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. is when does it just automatically turn off after
[00:12:15] five hours yeah it tells you in game it gives you messages like you have 15 minutes parental controls will log you off and you have to get to a safe place
[00:12:21] or something most operating you had to tell my friends hey man I gotta get off you know I 5 hours is up yeah it sucked
[00:12:28] it was very you know I see now why my parents would you sure are sure but it
[00:12:33] was very bad yes so do you do you have friends or do you know people who kind of felt like man I’ve got to get this
[00:12:39] out of my life it’s kind of controlling me more than I want it to control me do you know people like that mmm personally
[00:12:45] I haven’t met anyone that’s like clinically clinically you know diagnosed
[00:12:51] with a dick like an addictive behavior to video games sure but uh I’ve definitely seen it yeah I’m news and
[00:12:56] stuff what about you came up there I don’t personally know anyone who’s recognized hey I have a problem and I
[00:13:03] really need to shake this but I definitely know people who I believe are addicted to it and I think it’s possible because I mean anything you can use
[00:13:10] because some people play video games not only just for fun but like isn’t scape it’s the same thing as like people
[00:13:16] doing other things like playing music or playing sports and I definitely think that that can be something to run to yeah and that’s at one at some point
[00:13:23] that becomes like such a deep part of your life and what you do that you can’t
[00:13:28] help but just go back on and play but I don’t personally know anyone who’s recognized they have a problem but I definitely see problems yeah yeah
[00:13:34] absolutely well we’re coming up on a break here and my guests today are Duncan Hunter and Kate Hastings two
[00:13:40] young men they’re seniors in high school and you know they’re navigating the the ups and downs of life trying to figure
[00:13:47] out okay how does this all work how do I have a good life how do I make good decisions and one of those things in our
[00:13:53] current culture is the issue of video games in social media how do we navigate this in a way where we can we can enjoy
[00:14:00] it but at the same time it doesn’t dominate our lives or doesn’t actually begin to cause havoc in our
[00:14:06] relationships and that’s something else I want to talk to you guys about is girlfriend situations and has that ever
[00:14:11] been something that’s been brought up in your relation there laughing here so so I’m assuming it has so when we come back
[00:14:17] we’ll talk a little bit about relationships and even the fact that some marriages are suffering because of
[00:14:23] the influence of video games we’ll be right back [Music]

[00:16:29] life channel as well as our website incredible interviews I just got to interview last week
[00:16:35] sérgio Carrie yellow who used to be a Marvel and DC comics artist and he also
[00:16:44] is the artist for the action bible if you haven’t seen that it’s incredible it’s basically taking the quality of
[00:16:50] comics that you would see in like a Marvel comic and using it putting it into the Bible this guy’s incredible
[00:16:55] they’ve now sold over a million copies around the world of the action Bible it’s absolutely phenomenal great tool
[00:17:01] great witnessing tool you can give it as a gift for Christmas and people that don’t typically want to read the Bible they’re drawn into the the artwork and
[00:17:08] all and the story through sergio’s are it’s absolutely incredible but what we’re talking about today is we’re
[00:17:14] talking about video games and I got this I got this article off the internet here
[00:17:20] and it’s I don’t have the post here in front of me but it’s really interesting
[00:17:26] it says here an online UK divorce service says 200 petitions cited fortnight and other video games this
[00:17:32] year as the reason for the breakup of marriages and it says here professional
[00:17:38] athletes are getting hooked to the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks had so much trouble getting
[00:17:44] players to meetings and dinners they banned fortnight on the road I mean
[00:17:49] that’s absolutely incredible but you know that’s been my experience in my own family is that my son gets so wrapped up
[00:17:55] in the games that he doesn’t want to come to dinner he’s like hey hey wait I’ve got to finish this and even in my
[00:18:01] own life there was a point where my wife and I were having conflict because I wanted to play a video game and she was like turned that stupid thing off and so
[00:18:09] so again you know as a Christian as a Bible believing Christian these young men in the studio here with me are by
[00:18:15] believing Christians we’re trying to honor Christ with our lives and yet we’re trying to enjoy life the good
[00:18:20] things God has given us the mines he’s given us and so we want to navigate these pitfalls and I think
[00:18:25] for each one of us one of the things we have to watch out for is when something
[00:18:31] that we enjoy begins to take control of our lives so that’s when we have to go
[00:18:37] Oh red flag I should be careful but anyway I promised our listeners guys that that I would ask you about your
[00:18:43] relationships and have videogames affected your relationships at all Kade why don’t we start off with you you were
[00:18:49] you were talking about one of your relationships there yeah um so I think it can definitely be a factor in
[00:18:56] relationships because it takes time just like anything else um I actually had a girlfriend who when she would uh when
[00:19:02] she’d want to she’d call me just normal cos at night we would just talk or whatever after school and I’d be playing
[00:19:08] video games with some friends and for a little bit I’d try to like switch back and forth where I’d mute like my mic for
[00:19:15] my friends and talk to her one of the
[00:19:21] guys he’s talked about yeah he’d be like dude hold on he disappeared for 20
[00:19:26] minutes yeah it was was definitely interesting and there be times where she
[00:19:33] would say are you on a video game yeah first I try to cover our back no and she’d be like yeah you’re on a video
[00:19:38] game call me back when you’re when you’re off of it she’d hang up and I’d have to make a decision right there do I have anger girlfriend or do i oh yeah
[00:19:45] do I play video games more now now a question for you Kate so in the future
[00:19:50] do you think you’re gonna be gaming when you when you’re like married and all and do you think that that might there might
[00:19:56] be conflict there or what are your thoughts about that I definitely think I want to stick with video games I want to
[00:20:01] be a computer engineer so it’s definitely I’m gonna be have like hands deep and Technology all the time and yeah I know I know married couples who
[00:20:09] one of them still plays video games and uh I think I would be able to manage it well cuz I don’t I don’t just sits there
[00:20:15] and although one would be one of your tips for you know as a senior in high school I know you don’t have a
[00:20:20] tremendous amount of a life experience yet but still in your mind what would be a good way if somebody’s like oh man
[00:20:27] we’re having all this conflict how do you how do you navigate you know the time spent on gaming and then the time
[00:20:34] with the relationship how do you manage that well I definitely think that it should be something that the tube people talk about that on whoever’s part
[00:20:42] is who is playing the via games I think it’s their responsibility to kind of set aside some time and really focus on the
[00:20:49] relationship but they still shouldn’t be controlled and not doing something they enjoy so I think it’s just a healthy
[00:20:55] balance that they need to talk about and come to an understanding I know like I know you like to play video games
[00:21:00] I don’t not still like to like do things as a couple good communication yeah I’ve
[00:21:05] been that open yeah yes good advice Duncan what about you how have you ever had conflicts in relationships because of the the video
[00:21:11] games not particularly with a girlfriend but uh there’s definitely been like you know I’ve had buddies you know there’s
[00:21:18] been times where I actually used to not like go to hang outs and stuff and like you should not see people for weeks
[00:21:24] I think there was one summer before my freshman summer I didn’t see cuz I was friends of Kate and my other friend Matt
[00:21:29] Armijo and I didn’t see them shout out to Matt there huh but I think I don’t
[00:21:35] think I saw them for about three weeks haha because I just did nothing but play games that’s all work until t-ball yeah
[00:21:42] and until you brought your computer to our house to play like Mac desktop yeah
[00:21:49] yeah that’s like mm Mike really old really old a 2011 yeah and it doesn’t
[00:21:55] work now it’s why I’m out here yeah but I used to I used to lug that thing around you know my mom would drop me off
[00:22:01] computer that’s about my like you know so so let’s talk about this again same
[00:22:06] question I asked Kade Duncan in your mind if somebody let’s say somebody a friend comes to you and they and he goes
[00:22:12] man I’m really having trouble here in my relationship some things are hard what have you learned over the past four
[00:22:18] years about how to manage relationships as well as manager your time on the video games that you know you would give
[00:22:25] as a tip or some advice to somebody who doesn’t want the relationships to suffer because of that relation the gaming well
[00:22:32] I’ve kind of learned there’s a time for everything you know there’s a time you know to just veg out and kind of you know do nothing
[00:22:38] sure games for like you know relax for hours whatever relaxed you know do you think there’s also a time that like you
[00:22:43] know you you can’t you have to be focusing on the things right your life has a lot of a lot of priorities and you focus on you know a lot of other yeah
[00:22:51] and especially with you guys I’m you guys get ready for college here and everything you’re getting ready to go out into the workforce and all that kind
[00:22:57] of stuff so that’s stuff that you got to manage now are you considering at all getting into into politics or anything
[00:23:05] like that like you’re your father and grandfather in you know your good arguer so I think would be you know great to
[00:23:12] serve the country that way yeah I like it I’m older yeah maybe post-military
[00:23:17] oh okay so you’re thinking you’re thinking about going in the military that’s definitely a option yeah okay definitely shipped me up video game wise
[00:23:24] yeah yeah well as far as being able to aim and everything right that’s what they do in the military they use the
[00:23:29] video games for teaching people that well I wanted to read this again from this article here it says here Michael
[00:23:37] Jacobus who runs the reset summer camp for kids with addictions said about 60% of the hundred and twenty children he
[00:23:44] counseled at camps in Santa Barbara and Asheville North Carolina last summer were playing fortnight excessively
[00:23:50] treatment involves a technology detox their devices are taken away combined with healthy eating sleep and group
[00:23:56] therapy next summer he plans to enroll more than twice as many kids with additional locations in Texas Indiana
[00:24:03] and New York and I wanted to for our listeners I wanted to go over this you know the World Health Organization just
[00:24:10] recently designated video a game addiction as an actual mental health
[00:24:16] disorder and Andrew Doan who is chief of psychiatry in the Navy he has MD and a
[00:24:23] PhD in psychology in I believe psychiatry or psychology he said that
[00:24:29] one in 11 people is addicted to video games clinically addicted so for those
[00:24:34] of you who are listening if you want to see if you or one of your children is potentially addicted to video games this
[00:24:41] is not an this is a survey that was adapted from a alcohol addictions survey
[00:24:50] and I’m gonna go through these questions and guys if you’ll humor me and as I go through them just keep track of how many
[00:24:56] you say yes to and then I’ll get your feedback at the end on what you think okay so this is the video game addiction
[00:25:02] questionnaire over time have the number one over time have you been spending much more time thinking about
[00:25:08] playing video games learning about video game playing or planning the next opportunity to play number two do you
[00:25:16] need to spend more time and/or money on video games in order to feel the same amount of excitement as other activities
[00:25:22] in your life yes or no number three have you tried to play video games for shorter durations of
[00:25:28] times but have been unsuccessful number four you become Restless or irritable
[00:25:34] when attempting to cut down or stop playing video games number five have you played video games
[00:25:40] as a way of escaping from problems or bad feelings number six have you ever
[00:25:45] lied to family or friends about how much time you play video games number seven have you ever stolen a
[00:25:52] video game from a store or a friend or have you ever stolen money to buy a video game number eight do you sometimes
[00:25:58] skip household chores in order to spend more time playing video games number nine do you sometimes skip doing
[00:26:04] homework in order to spend more time playing video games number ten have you ever done poorly on a school
[00:26:10] assignment or test because you spent too much time playing video games and number eleven last one have you ever needed
[00:26:17] friends or family to give you extra money because you spent too much on video game equipment software or game
[00:26:23] internet fees okay so if you answered yes to six or more of these questions
[00:26:28] that the study here says then you most likely have an addiction to video games by the way you can check out more
[00:26:33] information about this at real battle org if you’re listening if you feel like maybe your kid or you are struggling
[00:26:39] with this you can do that so so that’s an adaption of actually not an alcohol
[00:26:45] addiction it from a gambling addiction quiz and it’s not rock solid as a way to
[00:26:53] evaluate if you have an addiction but if you answer yes to six or more then it’s something you should you know look into
[00:27:00] so guys where do you stand six or more where yeah I got six or more six or more how about eight okay so so that’s that’s
[00:27:08] good I mean for anybody to know anybody listening again I think the real issue
[00:27:14] for all of us here is that we live in a world where technology is pervasive it’s everywhere
[00:27:19] and we need to be able to figure it out now we’re up on a break here so we’re
[00:27:24] gonna come right back and we’re gonna talk about something that’s been in the news with videogames it’s called loop boxes and it’s actually causing the
[00:27:30] government to potentially get involved in regulating what goes on in video games and these guys actually have some
[00:27:37] experience with it so stay with us we’re gonna be right back [Music]

[00:29:55] o-r-g and I hope you’re enjoying the program today if you’re live streaming with us we’re on periscope YouTube Facebook to
[00:30:03] Facebook pages and I’ve got two young guys here in the studio with me today Duncan Hunter and Kate Hastings these
[00:30:09] guys are heading towards graduation May is almost here guys close are you are you excited or afraid both both very
[00:30:17] strong make sure yeah yeah very strong mixture yeah III remember what that felt like and it’s exciting but all of a
[00:30:24] sudden it feels like man I’ve got to be an adult now I’ve got to be responsible yeah well if you’ve been paying
[00:30:30] attention at all if you’re involved in the gaming industry at all there is something that’s happening in the news right now where the government is
[00:30:38] actually considering getting involved what’s happening is there’s loop boxes
[00:30:44] which come close to a gambling and so what’s happening is all these younger kids are engaging in what looks like
[00:30:50] gambling and I wanted to ask you Duncan you you had some experience with this
[00:30:56] what can you explain to our listeners who aren’t into the gaming what is a loop box and what what happens there yes
[00:31:01] basically a loop box you know best example is counter-strike you know Counter Strike global Offensive living
[00:31:07] is the newest without it’s been out for good ten years something like that okay long basically you know you’d have they
[00:31:14] have a market right a big steam counter-strike market and they have stun skins you know cases which of these loot
[00:31:19] boxes and this is all stuff you can buy online also if you can put it you can put in money through a credit card purchase it
[00:31:25] I never purchased a lot of it you know I mean I thought I would just gamble which we okay I’ll get to in a little bit
[00:31:31] about but um you know I started out with a very small amount of crates right is it there’s crates there’s different
[00:31:37] kinds of crates have expansions for them and it’s basically those crates cost money yeah they cost about 60 cents
[00:31:43] maybe per for the good ones maybe a dollar if it’s very good anew and you don’t know what’s in the crate you know
[00:31:49] well you know the skins that are in it but you have no idea what you’re gonna get okay there’s chances for everything so
[00:31:54] how many skins are there typical crate maybe eight to 15 and there’s a every
[00:32:02] crate as a rare to get a knife which is like too rare you know okay nice cost like 100 for
[00:32:08] anywhere from like $50 to around just like so a lot of these are a lot of
[00:32:14] these games free like fortnight’s free but then you buy things in in the game I think Irish like cost money on Steam
[00:32:20] okay the game itself costs um I think like eight or fifteen dollars some like that not expensive of it so you’ve got
[00:32:25] all these crates and then what happens so you buy crate maybe an old ones like three cents you buy you buy a three cent
[00:32:30] crate which you have to buy a key for which is also 250 oh wow you buy the key so you just spent two dollars and 53
[00:32:36] cents and this is on a digital thing that you’re enjoying yeah so you open the crate you get a there’s like
[00:32:42] basically like a kind of like a line there’s a skin skin skin skin kind of thing you’re Edgar and for those of you
[00:32:48] listening who don’t know what a skin is a skin is like a costume a gun skin yeah yeah basically equip it
[00:32:53] any others Rarity’s give us an example of like what some of the skins look like or are there like I know in for tonight
[00:32:59] they were saying you can put on like us yeah NFL songs right and you can put on different things like that yeah so Kyra
[00:33:04] show basically has thousands maybe not thousands but hundreds of gunskins they
[00:33:10] have different kinds of guns there they’re constantly adding new stuff right new skins new stuff and uh save
[00:33:15] m4a1 example you know typical assault rifle for um you know counter strike side or counter-terrorist so basically
[00:33:22] there’s all these skins so the one that comes to my mind is it’s called Diablo it’s a it’s like a red kind of scam it’s
[00:33:28] a it’s a pink I think or purple now I was like um very rare but not superior which is you know the red one I don’t
[00:33:34] know it classified so this game would probably cost like if you had its height like 14 $20 just to buy it off the
[00:33:41] market and then you put on your gun and then you could either buy it or you can buy a crate and yeah you get it right
[00:33:46] you can buy individual skins or you can buy crate which is cheaper if you get the skin but you know but it’s kind of a
[00:33:52] gamble on whether you’re gonna get something or not right so basically you know I got a knife once I’ve got a knife
[00:33:59] one side of a crate out of you know hundreds of crates that I’ve opened in my life and it was not worth it haha cuz
[00:34:08] cuz you know so what happened with the loop box where you ended up losing a whole bunch of money okay so that was a
[00:34:13] that was a gambling web site called I don’t want it I might not say no that’s okay you don’t have to say yeah
[00:34:18] it was a game website logon you know every day now see what it’s like when you say it’s a gambling website you mean
[00:34:24] it’s a video game gambling video game gambling yeah so you go in there right there’s a lobby they put you in a lobby
[00:34:30] right randomly assigned you get in there’s a pot basically a giant circle with a zero in the middle you join and
[00:34:37] you could talk to other people maybe maybe not as chat bar you know I’m a school what you do is you submit skins
[00:34:42] so whatever skins you have how expensive they are they all you just upload them to the site now you basically you do a
[00:34:48] trade deal what it’s called it’s to the site and the site puts them into the pot for you when you want you click a button you know pots go in kids go in yeah so
[00:34:55] everyone puts their skin to the pot and the the amount of money you put in is your percentage against other people so
[00:35:01] say I put in you know $20 worth of skins right and now the guy puts in a hundred my I have a 20% chance to win that pot
[00:35:08] and he has an 80% chance because it’s just different or something like that yeah but a lot of people getting into
[00:35:13] the pot and at one point I am on my way up very high and I had a a lot a lot of
[00:35:19] money on skins and I put it all in right I had a I had like a 99.5 chance to win
[00:35:25] now quick question here before you you give us this so when you when you say I gambled you’re saying you gave these
[00:35:32] skins which are actual money but they represent amount of money that they’re
[00:35:37] worth right they’re not it’s not just like cash and so this is why the video game industry has been able to do this
[00:35:42] without technically calling it gambling because it’s not actual dollars right
[00:35:49] that you’re doing so they cut our crossing a line there in a sense yeah a little bit I mean it’s just it’s
[00:35:55] very clever though how they set it up so what happened next so I put in you know a lot of money
[00:36:00] everything I had right put it all in how much was it how much was it worth um
[00:36:06] just a lot it is I think like in the thousands or what in skins thousands
[00:36:11] yeah it’s just what I’ve gambled up right I just kept so over time you held her time this is over like a formal
[00:36:17] areas of just me getting skins right okay and so I put them all in and uh a
[00:36:24] 99.5 chance to win and the wheel spun and with a point three percent chance one
[00:36:31] the pot and I lost everything that is yes I was on a call Kate when it happened I exited the Skype call irate I
[00:36:39] was so mad I was livid I raged yeah oh yeah understand that I only stalled the
[00:36:44] game reinstalling it later but just wasn’t the same without you know my
[00:36:50] skins yeah it was very odd and yeah it sucked yeah and a lot of in the news if
[00:36:55] you read about things where there’s devastating things that happen like this a lot of kids go out and do crazy things you know in extreme examples but but so
[00:37:03] what’s your view of that the loot boxes K do you have any opinions on the have you had experience with those also yes
[00:37:10] I never gambled on the website the doctor was talking about but I would buy the same cases hoping to get rare items
[00:37:16] and it’s not just found in a counter-strike it’s in there’s a bunch
[00:37:22] of other games that also have it Call of Duty has it will work have you know some stuff you can buy yeah there’s a Star
[00:37:29] Wars Battlefront both of those games had them that’s the one that’s currently in the news when they said it first started
[00:37:36] with Star Wars battle yeah that’s the one that really that’s want to really start it because they started the game
[00:37:42] makers started to implement you could get weapons that were better than the
[00:37:47] weapons you can get for free if you buy these cases you get a rare chance to yeah so everyone all the players who are
[00:37:53] really into it or like man like 250 for a chance to get like an amazing gun or something all that pay to play pay to
[00:37:59] play exactly yeah so it’s definitely I definitely think it’s um do you think
[00:38:04] you oughta do you think that loot boxes are somewhat addictive in the sense that you’re you’re constantly hoping for a
[00:38:10] win like kind of like gambling oh of course yeah definitely especially when there’s the lure of because like Duncan I
[00:38:16] mentioned some of the knives can be anywhere from fifty to a couple hundred dollars and just the the lure of that
[00:38:21] and you’re like oh I’m only paying 250 but I’m only buying like five so yeah yeah I definitely think it’s something
[00:38:27] that can you can get hooked on it now I’m curious what your guys you guys do you think parents in general are are
[00:38:33] aware of what the kids are experiencing in the games as far as loot boxes and
[00:38:40] skins and all this stuff you’re talking about or do you think parents are generally unaware because this stuff is so new to our culture I
[00:38:47] think I think they’re more unaware they definitely they can obviously see when where the money’s going but I don’t
[00:38:53] think they really realize the the lure it has especially not just like trying to get the items but using the items and
[00:39:00] having that kind of badge of honor like oh I have this extremely rare item I don’t think that they really understand
[00:39:06] that but I definitely understand or I think that they understand about just how addictive like or how they have a
[00:39:13] lack of regard for money they can just toss it in yeah yeah what about you thinkin what you know I I never actually
[00:39:20] spent a lot of my you know my family’s money on the game or any game really like not a lot but I because that’s why
[00:39:27] I never knew about it really because I just gambled I would just go on and use my own no trade people get five bucks
[00:39:33] put the five bucks and get ten bucks get to 20 bucks lose five little bit you know yeah a whole process and it’s all
[00:39:39] online right yeah it’s all yeah so just your own money yeah you would do it
[00:39:45] through like PayPal or something got a card or what yeah but I had a PayPal account but yeah yeah now you you
[00:39:53] if you’ve if you’ve been listening Duncan played about four and a half years worth of World of Warcraft that’s
[00:40:01] just that with game – that’s not other games right now do you have an idea of how much money you spent over that
[00:40:07] period of time it’s very hard to I mean you don’t you buy me by enemies do not have to spend any money on world of
[00:40:13] warcraft in-game yeah good because that’s no way because you’re already paying 15 to 20 bucks a month anyway yeah you can’t buy gear and game ready
[00:40:19] like that you can buy gold which is the in-game currency but I mean there’s there’s a lot of ways if you’re actually
[00:40:25] dedicated the game to like farm yeah farming gold making gold a game it’s very easy you know yeah yeah profession
[00:40:31] you sell things it’s basically how it is do you have any idea of how much money you spent over that amount of time
[00:40:36] including the subscriptions or including all video games not just World of
[00:40:41] Warcraft plus those others have you ever have you ever crunched that those numbers and to see no no it’s not too much yeah it’s just I haven’t spent a
[00:40:48] lot of money like in-game it’s more so on just buying games and I’ve bought quite a few I think yeah I bought at
[00:40:55] least 15 games I think I’m currently quest Steam account has you know quite a few games on there that I don’t have downloaded them in the past
[00:41:01] yeah you know game it’s very cheap on seems like five bucks ten bucks you know yeah just funny games and then xbox is a
[00:41:07] different story but okay well if you’re listening to my guest today our Duncan Hunter and Kate Hastings two seniors in
[00:41:14] high school other two of my students great guys and we’re gonna be right back and we’re going to talk a little bit
[00:41:19] about if you’re a parent and you’re concerned about where your child is or you’re thinking to yourself man where

[00:44:49] what tips would you give to somebody who said you know they want to have a walk with God and they like playing video
[00:44:56] games what does it look like to merge your Christianity with a gamer lifestyle
[00:45:01] what does that mean for for somebody you have any thoughts on that I mean you talk about like playing time
[00:45:08] or like just being like Christian II like you know I just mean being a Christian in the in the gamer world I
[00:45:14] mean I think it’s very hard to avoid you know you know internet profanity and just you know stuffing game it’s not you
[00:45:21] know it’s not very wholesome sure and I think just very few games where you can’t avoid that because you know most
[00:45:27] most big games like mmo’s you know shooter you know they all have like a voice chat
[00:45:32] or like a chat box of some kind sure and I think it’s hard to avoid that but you know there are ways to turn it off you
[00:45:38] know there’s always you know it’s just not talk you know not listen to anybody yeah I don’t know and I’d say just play
[00:45:43] video games moderately you know so uh you know with you talking about relationships earlier like I think to
[00:45:50] have a very healthy balance like Kate was talking about is very important and I just think just don’t get sucked in
[00:45:58] yeah though it is don’t let it dominate your life exactly yeah okay yeah I definitely grew Duncan I think um there’s a bit of like choice in
[00:46:06] what kind of games you play because there’s obviously like there’s the rating system and there’s obviously the more mature games that have a lot of
[00:46:12] stuff that Christians shouldn’t be really involved with and those may be fun but there’s also the games that are
[00:46:18] perfectly wholesome that are fun too and I think that really just for a person’s own beliefs and considering if it’s bad
[00:46:25] or not and comparing it to the Bible and the way that God wants us to live yeah there’s a bit of a there’s a way to
[00:46:30] conduct yourself definitely with other players and how you interact and there’s a bit of responsibility for choosing
[00:46:36] your game – yeah absolutely very cool and I wanted to read this scripture it says here first Corinthians
[00:46:42] chapter 6 and 11 through 12 and that is what some of you were but you were washed you were sanctified you were
[00:46:48] justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the spirit of our God everything is permissible for me but not
[00:46:53] everything is beneficial everything is permissible for me but I will not be mastered by anything and I think Paul’s
[00:46:58] guidance to each of one of us is kind of what you guys are saying to which is don’t allow the video game to start
[00:47:05] controlling your life you know God has God has a plan for our lives to to be a
[00:47:10] blessing to those around us and we don’t want something to so dominate our lives that we can no longer be the blessing that we’re called to be but maybe your
[00:47:17] blessing it what you’re called to be is light in the gamer industry right very very likely so Galatians chapter 5 22
[00:47:24] through 23 also says but the fruit of the Spirit is love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness and self-control and so I get
[00:47:32] again I think one of the red flags if you’re out there listening and either you yourself or your children are
[00:47:38] starting to no longer have self-control but they’re being controlled by video games
[00:47:44] you know fortnight or World of Warcraft or whatever it might be then that’s it’s a sign that oh I got to reevaluate take
[00:47:50] a step back and go hey what’s happening here it says here for now fortnight is
[00:47:59] the game of choice on a recent afternoon the game was the most viewed on Amazon coms twitch streaming service with
[00:48:04] 250,000 people watching others play yeah yeah absolutely crazy and this article
[00:48:12] here says waggle who’s seen about who’s seeing about 20 compulsive fortnight players he’s a he’s basically a
[00:48:18] counsellor for video game addicts recommends that parents keep kids under 10 from playing video games so he says
[00:48:24] don’t even play at all and parents need to set limits when they do play as games get more sophisticated in their ability
[00:48:30] to hook fans he sees the issue of addiction only growing and he ends by saying it’s gonna be more of a problem
[00:48:36] than it is now so this isn’t an issue that’s gonna go away it’s an issue that is going to especially with coming out
[00:48:42] with 3d virtual technology or yeah VR and all that kind of stuff but but I
[00:48:47] wanted to get this in before our show wraps up here so what led up to this three-day binge of videogames with no
[00:48:54] sleeping well so we me and Kade another
[00:48:59] friend Matt which I mentioned earlier yeah we we decided to start a twitch channel so the twitch streaming app
[00:49:05] you’re talking about and we were all hyped up like yeah we’re gonna you know we’re gonna do a 3-way stream and you
[00:49:11] know we all hop on in their own times do our own games and get super popular because it’s very it’s a very wealthy
[00:49:16] industry if you look at like just streaming video yeah I think that the the number one moneymaker on YouTube is
[00:49:22] a gamer is a it’s a at the time and he’s like he’s like made millions well I
[00:49:27] think it’s ninja he’s fortnight it’s a fortnight stream okay I never I’ve never personally liked
[00:49:33] him very much that’s kind of a weird like he’s cool you know what he does is good he makes money no he’s doing he’s
[00:49:40] doing what he likes yeah but I just don’t like him personally yeah but um so yeah I decided to stream and try to make
[00:49:47] it a three day kind of you know all matter stream I think I got like 36 people at one point 36 people like
[00:49:55] watching all watching it yeah and how long you could go right cuz on Twitch there’s a thing called a sub button just uh I used to
[00:50:01] watch the streamer called sodapoppin yeah and back in the day you played World of Warcraft played all my favourite games basically grew up on
[00:50:07] watching him and just played games and I think he stole streams today actually over like the ten years I’ve seen him
[00:50:13] like grow up you know he was in college and I was seven or some and now he’s like you know his thirties millionaire I
[00:50:19] think but I tried to stream for three days and I couldn’t I couldn’t stream for three days but I stayed on for three
[00:50:24] days and yeah in that you know kind of segments of time I think I called Kane a couple times I called a couple of my
[00:50:31] other friends you know going from xbox to computer to ex-boss computer back-and-forth now where you feeling
[00:50:36] like by you know you’re halfway through what do you think what’s going through your mind Red Bull and snacks were you
[00:50:45] thinking at all like man this is like my health or something maybe I’ll die kind
[00:50:51] of sitting there like yes that’s why that’s what I like to do I didn’t personally I never had many friends yeah
[00:50:57] up until my sophomore year second semester with football started so freshman year all I had was you know my
[00:51:03] online friends yeah that was fine with me about with that yeah but I mean to me it was just like hey I’m hanging out
[00:51:08] with my friends online for three days right and so so so after day two were you starting to get tired and oh yeah
[00:51:14] fatigued yeah I was tired but I was at the point you know that little adrenaline kick yeah yeah it hits you
[00:51:19] and you’re like oh I can stay up yeah fades like three hours were you having heart palpitations from the Red Bulls or anything I mean a lot and you use the
[00:51:33] bathroom oh yeah I had a I had access to water dude saluting you didn’t go and like I can next year no but yeah cuz the rating
[00:51:42] in World of Warcraft which is something we haven’t talked about yet it’s very it’s very intricate and it’s a you can
[00:51:49] you get into it it’s fun trying to say yeah lots of raids you know when the expansion just drop and well it’s a new
[00:51:54] gear and you know yeah this stuff I was one of those people just kept striving cuz I had a guild at that point yeah and
[00:52:00] I know the more the higher the better you get the more time it takes to manage oh yeah we had like we had like
[00:52:07] schedules we had a schedule for raiding I think it was Tuesdays Thursdays Sundays Tuesdays and Thursdays I was probably what was called the core
[00:52:12] team you know the core like I think we had like 14 15 guys it was a you know we
[00:52:18] had the way everyone had their role right yeah we’d all show up we’d all get on yeah and that’s part of what makes it so so
[00:52:25] magnetic so fun why people want to do it yeah yeah so we don’t we’d all get on the same time you know 15 people we jump
[00:52:31] in the raid do eight bosses get off Thursday we’d get back on at the same time go for four hours and kill eight
[00:52:37] more bosses finish the instance and then on Sunday I think we did like all runs all alternative characters yeah our
[00:52:43] level classes yeah well hey guys we are we are just about out of time here I think it was a great show thanks for
