How To Live Unstoppable — with Kevin Conover and Bethany Hamilton

On this episode of The Educate for Life Podcast, we explore what it means to live courageously with a biblical worldview in the face of pain and pressure. Pro surfer and author Bethany Hamilton shares how Christ-centered resilience, Christian apologetics, and faith-formed habits can shape Christian parenting, student discipleship, and homeschool curriculum choices. If you’ve ever wondered how faith and science intersect with grit, purpose, and identity, this conversation will encourage your whole family.

From Setback to Strength: Bethany’s Christ-Anchored Grit

Bethany Hamilton—world-class surfer, author of Soul Surfer and Unstoppable, and founder of faith-forward mentoring initiatives—joins Kevin to unpack how Scripture reframes adversity. As a teenager, Bethany survived a shark attack that took her left arm; soon after, she returned to competition and later championed a message of hope for young women and families.

In this episode, Bethany explains how knowing Christ as King grounds perseverance, gratitude, and mental discipline. Parents and educators will hear how to cultivate resilient thinking in the next generation, integrating wise routines, identity formation in Christ, and “holy optimism” that doesn’t deny suffering but redeems it. The discussion connects naturally to Christian education at home and school, showing how worldview training equips students to face real-life storms.

Finally, Kevin and Bethany consider how creation science and evidence-based faith help students see God’s world as a place of meaning, order, and stewardship. The goal isn’t merely inspiration; it’s discipleship—forming minds and hearts that endure, serve, and shine for Jesus.

Key Takeaways

  • How a Christ-centered identity fuels unstoppable resilience in teens and parents.

  • Why worldview training and Christian apologetics matter in today’s classrooms and homeschool plans.
  • Integrating purpose, service, and excellence into sports, study, and daily life.
  • Framing hardship within God’s larger story—moving from pain to purpose.

Known most notably as one of the biggest comeback stories of our era, Bethany Hamilton has become synonymous with inspiration. Her story of determination, faith, and hope has resounded in encouragement worldwide. At the age of 13 as a rising surf star, Bethany lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark, which seemed to end her dream career. However, one month after the attack, Bethany returned to surfing and within two years had won her first national surfing title.

Bethany’s foundation of faith has been her backbone; her source of truth, hope, and strength. At 17 years old, she realized her dream of surfing professionally and she is still an active surf competitor to this day. Bethany has been able to touch a large number of people with her faith message, charitable efforts, and overall spirit. Her greatest joy is being a wife and mother, and she continues to touch and inspire lives globally as a professional surfer, author, and motivational speaker. How We Can Help You

At Educate for Life, we equip families and schools to build a confident, Bible-anchored faith that stands firm. If this episode resonates, explore our Comprehensive Biblical Worldview Curriculum—a guided path to help students think Christianly about culture, truth, and purpose.

We also offer a Creation Science Curriculum for Kids that pairs scientific discovery with Scripture, and resources for Christian Apologetics at Home so you can tackle tough questions with clarity and grace. These tools align with the heart of Bethany’s message: courage rooted in Christ, knowledge shaped by truth, and love expressed through service.

Here’s a short excerpt from the episode:

    • Kevin: “How much of being ‘unstoppable’ is mindset—and how much is grounded in your faith in Christ?”
    • Bethany: “What makes me unstoppable is Jesus Christ. He has overcome, and in Him I find the strength to persevere.”
    • Bethany: “When life gets tough, I start with gratitude. It changes how I see obstacles and helps me move forward.”
    • Kevin: “Parents and teachers want to raise courageous kids. What habits can build that kind of resilience?”
    • Bethany: “Anchor your identity in being God’s child, then practice small, daily steps of courage and thanksgiving.”

[00:01:18] that it says anchored in love is an

[00:01:20] inspiring one-day conference for junior

[00:01:22] high high school and college age girls

[00:01:24] their moms and mentors designed to help

[00:01:26] young women discover their true beauty

[00:01:28] purpose and Worth Bethany thanks for

[00:01:31] being on the program today

[00:01:38] oh yeah I am so excited that you’re

[00:01:41] going to be here in San Diego and I’m a

[00:01:43] high school teacher I teach Bible at a

[00:01:45] Christian high school and I think your

[00:01:47] message is so necessary and so needed in

    [00:01:51] today’s culture where there’s so much

[00:01:52] that young people are wrestling with and

[00:01:55] trying to work through and there’s so

[00:01:57] much that seems to be coming against

    [00:01:59] them

[00:02:00] yeah and that’s a huge part of my life

[00:02:03] my mission is to help also young

    [00:02:06] people’s approvers toast times when it’s

[00:02:08] like almost a Bible verse and this world

[00:02:11] will have trouble with her overcome the

    [00:02:14] world

[00:02:15] hey man that’s awesome ATP and I always

[00:02:19] think of that because it’s less the

[00:02:21] truth of the matter we are gonna have

[00:02:23] some time and trouble and soon as

[00:02:26] prevalent but it’s finding our way to

[00:02:34] overcome you okay yeah I love it I love

[00:02:37] it and you know for those of you who are

[00:02:39] listening who haven’t seen her story

[00:02:42] you know Bethenny I wanted to ask you

[00:02:44] you know you you were amazing how you

[00:02:47] push through these things and I when I

[00:02:50] when you see the story of your life it’s

[00:02:52] almost in a sense it feels like you were

[00:02:55] almost born with this determination and

[00:02:57] I think you know how much of being

[00:03:00] unstoppable with the movie that came out

[00:03:02] how much of that is a mental mindset

[00:03:05] versus you know the physical strength

[00:03:08] how did you develop such a strong

[00:03:11] resilience and determination oh my gosh

[00:03:15] sometimes I look at my 13 qualities like

[00:03:20] yourself and I’m like why did you do

[00:03:27] that I feel like I spent a lot of time

[00:03:30] like actually well we can stop the whole

[00:03:33] just thinking about all that yeah well

[00:03:36] is it that drills me and kept me moving

[00:03:39] forward and I think just having a

[00:03:43] ruining mystic I like you know most of

[00:03:46] us as we have being tough kind of not to

[00:03:49] sound or feel like something’s holding

[00:03:53] us back it can be easy to kind of just

[00:03:56] redirect or just saying oh no I can’t

[00:04:00] deny that for me surfing was sexist

[00:04:05] being passive and it was just what I did

[00:04:07] every single day I woke up looking

[00:04:10] forward to it and I went to bed dreaming

[00:04:13] of it so when I left I’m as soon as I

[00:04:17] got a hint of inspiration um I knew I

[00:04:20] had to at least try I was just gonna get

[00:04:23] out there and try and then once I did

[00:04:25] try I got up on my third wave loaded all

[00:04:27] the way to the beep and then there’s no

[00:04:30] turning back and of course it wasn’t

[00:04:32] easy um all the best things in life

[00:04:35] don’t have to be necessarily so I think

[00:04:39] just kind of keep seek I kept seeking

[00:04:43] after that like that desire of the love

[00:04:46] for it and that feeling of writing Leah

[00:04:49] steps company kind of Baskin yeah and so

[00:04:53] how does that thank you I had so much

[00:04:56] purpose and belief in myself because I

[00:04:59] knew who I was as a child of God and I

[00:05:03] always trusted that God has more for my

[00:05:06] life but that I just thought I was like

[00:05:11] hey I think this will come out of this

[00:05:13] even though it seems so terrible right

[00:05:15] now yeah yeah and that’s such a powerful

[00:05:18] message – how does that translate into

[00:05:20] the message that you give – you know for

[00:05:22] example at the conference anchored in

[00:05:25] love how does that experience and what

    [00:05:27] you’re talking

[00:05:28] about their translate into the message

[00:05:29] you give to these young women as far as

[00:05:32] the other things that they you know they

[00:05:34] probably you know most people don’t have

[00:05:36] their arm bit off by a shark but but

[00:05:38] they have other struggles in their life

[00:05:40] so how do you encourage them in that

[00:05:44] what with what you’re saying you had at

[00:05:46] that passion that you just you look

[00:05:47] forward to going back into the ocean

[00:05:49] what do you tell those young young women

[00:05:53] yeah I think a lot about some crowd yeah

[00:05:58] your mindset and keep using positives or

[00:06:01] one thing that stood out to me students

[00:06:04] rather than dwelling on my hey my arm

[00:06:07] and sighs life is rough

[00:06:08] I was painful that I was alive so

[00:06:11] approaching like tough times must

[00:06:13] gratitude like hey that’s really hard

[00:06:16] but what’s something I can be thankful

[00:06:18] for and look forward to and maybe the

[00:06:23] people around you are bringing it down

[00:06:26] but we just remember that you can be

[00:06:29] about person that uplifts those around

[00:06:31] you notice the positive like encourage

[00:06:34] ER and yeah it’s like we can all

[00:06:38] overcome our difficult circumstances if

[00:06:41] we look for the good in situations and

[00:06:45] just find another way to do it

[00:06:48] like I couldn’t survive it with no

[00:06:51] little success in my own new way with

[00:06:54] one arm yeah so finding your new way of

[00:06:58] kind of like approaching whatever it is

[00:07:00] that feels like it can hold you back

[00:07:03] there bring you down yeah I thought that

[00:07:05] was so cool how your dad put that little

[00:07:08] handle on the on the board to help you

[00:07:10] be able to duck dive and go into the

[00:07:12] waves and everything for those of you

[00:07:14] listening my guest today is Bethany

[00:07:16] Hamilton you can learn more about her at

[00:07:18] Bethany Hamilton comm she’s also on

[00:07:20] social media Instagram and everywhere

[00:07:22] else you can follow her and you may or

[00:07:24] may not know so Bethany you have a

[00:07:27] husband and two kids right yeah that’s

[00:07:36] my greatest passion for sure and like

[00:07:38] right now that’s so cool now your

[00:07:40] husband I read is from Kansas how did

[00:07:43] how did your from Hawaii and he’s from

[00:07:45] Kansas how did you to connect

[00:07:48] yeah so after college I came about the

[00:07:53] high to help a friend for a young life

[00:07:56] organization juice on the west side of

[00:07:58] toys and his friend and their family

[00:08:03] they absolutely loved Adam and very like

[00:08:05] streaming to try to find in the life so

[00:08:10] they sent us awesome we met up at the

[00:08:13] beach one day and we jumped off a 40

[00:08:17] foot closer to the Oh smooth just to get

[00:08:20] to know each other that that’s great

[00:08:23] that’s pretty awesome so yeah we really

[00:08:28] awesome friendships and then about a

[00:08:31] year later we were engaged and cocaine

[00:08:35] to get married that’s fantastic and you

[00:08:39] have two little kids now Tobias and

[00:08:40] Wesley so how has you know how has

[00:08:43] having these two little kids come into

[00:08:45] your life how has that impacted your you

[00:08:48] know what you’re doing with movies and

[00:08:50] surfing and everything else how do you

[00:08:53] navigate all those different things that

    [00:08:55] you’re doing it’s very empowering so

[00:09:01] it’s doing a lot very kind of motivation

[00:09:04] for like good things then so that I

[00:09:07] think on see your son and I close out

[00:09:10] and sweets and what not are they surfers

[00:09:14] also my husband and I this is really

[00:09:20] special kind of culture together yeah

[00:09:24] yeah it’s a big exhibition okay enjoy it

[00:09:27] yeah let’s celebrate it also venture

[00:09:29] further I like this like C anodized to

[00:09:32] go it’s really fun I’m just saying it

[00:09:35] together with Evan young my little guy

[00:09:38] my philosophy and my rules are like the

[00:09:42] water and yeah it’s a fun fun unlikely

[00:09:46] super thankful for that that’s really

[00:09:49] great love saying like the common ones

[00:09:52] are I rather do everything we do with it

[00:09:55] so you know I also saw that you’re

    [00:09:58] you’ve actually started a course online

    [00:10:01] for people as

[00:10:01] called live unstoppable what is that for

[00:10:05] people to know how they can be involved

[00:10:07] in what you’re doing there

[00:10:09] No so I stand in this place is kind of a

[00:10:13] silencing so long time now and I also am

[00:10:19] pretty on top of the whole social media

[00:10:22] realm Instagram and Facebook and whatnot

[00:10:25] and no one else and don’t love and I

[00:10:29] felt like it’s like such a shallow world

[00:10:32] and a place of lacking stuff so to me I

[00:10:36] wanted to share more and Sally my

[00:10:41] husband when I realized team of

[00:10:42] like-minded people who we trust kind of

[00:10:46] came together and I create this online

[00:10:48] course to inspire young people to be

[00:10:51] their beautiful selves and to live and a

[00:10:53] supple license to kind of expose all of

[00:10:56] those areas of life that can make us

[00:10:58] more confident and solid and this

[00:11:02] testing or like who God has created us

    [00:11:06] to be

[00:11:07] yeah I know yeah this closes was little

[00:11:11] you’re gearing up to have so excited to

[00:11:13] be doing more than like I don’t know I’m

[00:11:17] just able to actually equip people

[00:11:18] versus just kind of be a little

[00:11:21] inspiration here and there and so it’s

[00:11:24] been really exciting this two seasons

[00:11:26] past is having so far and we believe in

[00:11:29] the monster about two months ago

[00:11:31] so yes it’s exciting so those want to

[00:11:35] close it all and you feel like you could

[00:11:38] benefit from it check it out on my

[00:11:39] website with Bethany Hamilton calm and

[00:11:42] yeah not the month will be like live

[00:11:44] CUNY – and if it’s pretty like more

[00:11:47] intimate than Mike must things like you

[00:11:50] can just you can catch up with me on

    [00:11:53] Simone for that’s awesome yeah that’s

    [00:11:57] fantastic

[00:11:57] IIIi think so much kids need that

[00:12:00] mentorship and that discipleship and

[00:12:02] encouragement you know there’s a lot of

[00:12:03] people out there that are giving

[00:12:04] positive messages about resilience and

[00:12:07] they call it grit and these sorts of

[00:12:09] things but you are you are integrating

[00:12:12] your faith in God and Jesus Christ in

[00:12:14] you know everything you do what role did

[00:12:17] God play – Jesus Christ play in you

[00:12:20] becoming you know having this

    [00:12:21] unstoppable mindset and

[00:12:23] and how do you communicate that to the

[00:12:24] young people and other people many

[00:12:26] people who are listening to you and what

    [00:12:28] you have to say

[00:12:30] Wow you know since I became a Christian

[00:12:36] it’s been case has been kind of my rock

[00:12:39] in my strength to all of life’s

[00:12:42] challenges beyond callosum on this is

[00:12:46] day Liam insane things that can be like

[00:12:48] so frustrating or discoursing if so I

[00:12:52] have found that just being able to refer

[00:12:55] to God’s Word and his not only his law

[00:12:59] but his love for us feeling the way you

[00:13:02] know Christ dying on the cross person

[00:13:05] how that translates to every single day

[00:13:09] and that can empower us to live

[00:13:12] unsolvable and you know I’m putting out

[00:13:15] this knot of like hey live and stoppable

[00:13:17] and that can look so many different ways

[00:13:20] but really direct what makes me

[00:13:22] unstoppable is Jesus Christ like it’s he

[00:13:27] has overcome and conquered sin and death

[00:13:30] and all the evil and that is what a

    [00:13:33] power overcome it’s like it’s through

[00:13:36] Christ that I’ve been able to yeah

    [00:13:40] overcome so yeah that’s that’s fantastic

[00:13:46] ways and hope that someone will find

[00:13:50] some demonstration and my along the way

[00:13:53] yeah in the movie you constantly

[00:13:57] reference Christ in the movie you’re

[00:13:59] very open about your faith was that ever

[00:14:02] was that ever scary for you did you ever

[00:14:05] because you know you’ve been on shows

[00:14:07] like Oprah and all these different

    [00:14:08] things

[00:14:08] was there ever a point where you were

[00:14:10] afraid to share your faith or be up be

[00:14:12] upfront about your faith in all this

[00:14:16] that you’ve been going through

[00:14:18] yeah I think it is like finding the

[00:14:22] balance like I’m not trying to like

[00:14:24] young people in the house before just

[00:14:26] joining my son honey because I was too

[00:14:30] young and speaking normally very violent

    [00:14:40] process I am I really

[00:14:49] it seems everything things and you just

[00:14:53] said it right yeah okay yeah absolutely

[00:15:01] okay and then yeah so in the movie

[00:15:06] you said something pretty amazing as a

[00:15:08] young girl you said that you were glad

[00:15:10] it happened to you and not to your

[00:15:12] friend Ilana I thought that was a pretty

[00:15:14] amazing statement that at such a young

[00:15:16] age you felt that way you know looking

[00:15:20] back and where God has brought you

[00:15:22] through that would you say that you know

[00:15:27] would you say to somebody that hey God

[00:15:28] has used what happened in my life to

[00:15:31] really impact a lot of people and take

[00:15:32] me to a larger stage I mean it seems

[00:15:35] like that’s the case but I just wanted

[00:15:37] to hear your perspective on that and

[00:15:39] that traveling through that did you have

[00:15:41] a lot of times where you asked God why

[00:15:43] God did you let this happen to me or did

[00:15:46] you always feel like you know what

[00:15:47] there’s a good reason for this happening

    [00:15:51] I definitely felt like I knew like I

[00:15:54] already early on this is a good that was

[00:15:58] stemming from what seemed so terrible or

[00:16:01] I think sometimes when we’re so close to

[00:16:05] us the turbulence of a challenging time

[00:16:09] it’s hard to have that perspective but I

[00:16:13] don’t know somehow you can have a quote

[00:16:16] up in your house it’s like hey right now

[00:16:18] is really fast that in six months from

[00:16:21] now I’m going to be overcoming this I

[00:16:23] said it’s going to come from this or

[00:16:25] maybe not even six months maybe six

[00:16:27] years from now like for everyone’s

[00:16:31] situation is always it’s different so

[00:16:34] that I’ve heard so many people say like

[00:16:37] they went through tremendous pain and

[00:16:39] then one day they were able to share how

[00:16:43] without seeing that pain with someone

[00:16:45] else going through something similar it

    [00:16:47] was incredibly worth it

[00:16:50] so that’s honestly so perspective of

[00:16:53] like what’s something you can do in

[00:16:55] school for and so I know that like good

[00:16:59] will come from what seem so terrible

[00:17:02] unless that’s been the case in my life

[00:17:04] like I could never have posted my other

[00:17:07] stories the way it turned out and only

[00:17:10] God could and so yeah I just praise God

[00:17:14] for like all the good that come from

[00:17:17] let’s start it off as like yeah yeah so

[00:18:03] little cold for me but I guess I gotta

[00:18:05] overcome that challenge that’s great

[00:18:09] and then you’re also doing an event it

[00:18:12] looks like in January called beautifully

[00:18:14] flawed can you tell us a little bit

[00:18:57] time for these women who have faced so

[00:18:59] much but they’re overcoming two and this

[00:19:02] is hopefully Authority is designed to

[00:19:05] help them continue to over comments I

[00:19:07] say light and strengthen yeah just be

[00:19:11] encouraged and they journey absolutely

[00:19:14] well we’re almost out of time here but

[00:19:17] for those of you who are listening

[00:19:18] Bethany Hamilton comm she’s got all

[00:19:21] kinds of resources on here that are

[00:19:23] meant to encourage you and I think

[00:19:25] personally you know probably more than

[00:19:28] 50% of the battle here is helping our

[00:19:30] thoughts get in line with Christ that is

[00:19:32] beginning to think more and more like

[00:19:34] God right and adjusting our thinking so

[00:19:37] that it’s not negative but it’s positive

[00:19:39] and it’s hopeful and so her movie

[00:19:43] unstoppable is available on DVD it’s

[00:19:45] also available to be streamed on Amazon

[00:19:47] it’s an incredible testimony that she

[00:19:49] has about the goodness of God redeeming
