I visited Point Loma Nazarene University to find out how students’ views of Genesis, creation, and evolution are being influenced by their professors. PLNU is a Christian university, and I would hope their faculty would teach that the historical and spiritual authority of the Bible is greater than the authority of secular fallible claims made by men who interpret and make assumptions about what they see around them and earth’s history.
The reality is that even the most brilliant scientists have made tremendous blunders about scientific reality. Einstein himself believed that the universe was eternal (steady state universe) at one time, in contradiction to the Bible which teaches there was a beginning to the universe. Christians during the early 1900’s had a choice: go with Einstein, the most brilliant scientist alive, or go with the Bible. Which would you have believed? If you had gone with Einstein you would have been wrong. Current scientific discoveries now acknowledge that the Bible’s view that the universe had a beginning is the correct one.
We’re currently in a similar situation, but with a different question. The Bible says life did not evolve, but was created approximately 6,000 years ago along with the rest of creation (Exodus 20:11); but the current evolutionary paradigm teaches life started evolving billions of years ago and the universe came into existence some 15 – 20 billion years ago. The Bible teaches sin brought death into the world (Romans 5:12-15), but theistic evolution teaches that there was death before sin.
Don’t take the Bible on blind faith. Believe the Bible based on the fact that it’s been validated as correct in its history, science, and claims about reality over and over again. It truly is God’s word. For the scientific evidence, sign up for one of our classes.
