Happy Heart, Healthy Bones

Many people have experienced upset stomachs which accompany worry.  But did you know that unhappiness can even affect your bones?

A recent medical show was looking at the risk factors for osteoporosis. Some of the risk factors include: being overly thin with a small skeleton, being a smoker, not drinking enough water, a lack of boron, and drinking alcohol. But scientists have also found depression to be a risk factor. It seems “depression causes inflammatory chemicals that suck away some of the bone”.

King Solomon, to whom God gave the gift of great wisdom, made a surprisingly similar observation in Proverbs 17:22: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”  Almost 3,000 years later, we are just now catching up to Solomon’s knowledge!  The Bible is truly the inspired Word of God, and it is accurate whenever it speaks on science.

God is our creator, and of course he wants us to be happy and healthy.  So laugh a little and be joyful!  It is good medicine for the bones.
