How to Respond to Racism and White Privilege

Every culture is wrestling with race, racism, and the idea of “white privilege,” and many Christian families feel stuck between reacting emotionally or staying silent. In this episode of The Educate for Life Podcast, host Kevin Conover offers a biblical worldview response that’s anchored in truth, love, and clarity. Whether you’re a parent, homeschool educator, or student navigating hard conversations in school or online, this discussion equips you to think biblically about justice, human dignity, and unity in Christ.

Seeing Racism Through a Biblical Lens

Kevin approaches race relations the way a careful doctor approaches a diagnosis: before we prescribe cultural “cures,” we need to define terms honestly and evaluate claims wisely. He unpacks how words like racism, systemic racism, bias, prejudice, and discrimination are often blurred together—sometimes intentionally—and why that confusion can drive division instead of healing. Drawing from Scripture, Kevin reminds listeners that God shows no partiality, that all people are made in His image, and that the Gospel dismantles prideful superiority of any kind. In a time when social media accelerates outrage, this episode calls Christians back to the steady ground of God’s Word and the call to “live at peace with all people” as far as it depends on us.

You’ll also hear Kevin respond to popular cultural voices and statistics that claim racism is the primary explanation for every disparity. Without dismissing real sin or suffering, he challenges listeners to ask better questions: What is the evidence? What is the true root issue? And what does a Christ-centered solution look like? This blend of Christian apologetics and practical discipleship makes the conversation especially helpful for families wanting to disciple kids in a confused world.

Key Takeaways

  • Why clear definitions matter when talking about racism, systemic bias, and white privilege
  • How Scripture condemns partiality and elevates human dignity across every ethnicity
  • The difference between racism and stereotyping—and why that distinction affects solutions
  • How to evaluate cultural “diagnoses” with wisdom instead of fear or pressure
  • Practical ways Christian parents and educators can guide students through tough race discussions

In today’s culture race is a hot button topic. Racism is traditionally defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior. Today, it is being redefined to mean a majority that oppresses a minority because they are different.

Today on Educate For Life, Kevin will dive deep into the topic of racism and how it affects our culture. He takes on some of the misconceptions about racism. He will look at the differences between bias and racism. He will examine whether human conditions such as poverty and crime are a direct result of racism. He will explore the statistics on racism in America and whether America is one of the most racist countries in the world.

This is an information-packed episode and you don’t want to miss it. Tune in to Educate For Life to find out more.

How We Can Help You

At Educate for Life, we know these conversations don’t stay in theory—they show up at the dinner table, in classrooms, and in your child’s feed. That’s why our mission is to help families build a strong, compassionate, Bible-centered worldview that can stand firm in cultural storms. If you want to train your students to think clearly about justice, identity, and truth, our [Comprehensive Biblical Worldview Curriculum] is a great next step for homeschool or Christian education settings.

And because issues like racism and privilege are often tied to deeper questions about morality, history, and human nature, you might also appreciate our [Christian Apologetics at Home] resources, which help teens respond thoughtfully to hard objections and social narratives. For a wider foundation on truth, love, and cultural engagement, explore our [School of Unshakable Faith] courses—designed to equip believers to speak the truth in love with confidence and grace.

Here’s a short excerpt from the episode:

  • “The Bible is very clear that I’m to be at peace with all men… and that God does not show partiality on race.”
  • “If the diagnosis is false, you end up trying to find a solution that doesn’t fit… and you can cause more hurt than good.”
  • “Systemic means system-wide… the question is, is there really systemic racism?”
  • “We want to be crystal clear in our communications… say what you mean and mean what you say.”
  • “Racism is evil because it treats something immutable—race—as if it makes one person superior to another.”

[00:02:14] host Kevin Conover and I’m excited to have you on the air with us today we’re live-streaming on Facebook we’re on

[00:02:20] YouTube we’re on periscope and we should be on our own website real soon here to Roberts helping me out and in studio so

[00:02:27] it’s fantastic and over the over the weekend I actually live streamed us down

[00:02:33] at the beach I had a long conversation with a member of the LDS Church it was an awesome conversation he was helping

[00:02:40] out down here in San Diego fighting human trafficking fantastic guy and we had a great conversation about the

[00:02:46] difference between the evangelical church and Mormonism and and you know that’s what the show is all about it’s about what is the truth right we’re

[00:02:52] trying to get it at the truth and and there’s so many people out there with so many different opinions so what we want to talk about is we want to figure out

[00:02:58] what is the truth and something I feel like it’s really important to talk about I’ve actually been talking about this with my high school students is the

[00:03:04] issue of racism you know there’s a very famous guy on YouTube his name’s John Green you’ve probably heard of them they

[00:03:11] made a movie out of a book he wrote the book was called The Fault in Our Stars and it’s about young kids that have

[00:03:17] cancer one one kid has his leg actually amputated and and it’s a very romantic yet tragic story of these two kids and

[00:03:26] this really took off this this book that he wrote people really loved it and they

[00:03:32] ended up making it into a movie but he published his content on YouTube all the time about all kinds of

[00:03:38] different stuff and I kind of wanted to call him out so John Green if you happen to look at this program I’d be I’d love to hear

[00:03:45] what you what you think about what I’m going to share because in his his a video the video is specifically called

[00:03:52] racism in the United States by the numbers in it he specifically says that

[00:03:58] there is systemic racism throughout American culture and this is a pretty

[00:04:04] blatant claim that there is systemic racism I’ll get I’ll get more into that

[00:04:09] but I wanted to tell you a little bit about more about his particular video and channel the channel he has is called

[00:04:15] vlogbrothers it has 3.1 million subscribers so clearly this guy is very influential the video that I’m talk

[00:04:22] has 1 million two hundred and seventy eight thousand views it’s got 40,000

[00:04:27] likes and it’s got 2,300 dislikes so what this tells us is there’s a lot of people that are watching this video

[00:04:33] they’re liking the video they feel positive about what he’s saying they agree with what he’s saying and so he is

[00:04:40] influencing the culture for good or for bad and and the question is is when he

[00:04:45] makes the claim that there is systemic racism within American culture is this

[00:04:50] helping our situation or is it not you know a lot of people in the world today will we’ll make a diagnostic claim about

[00:04:58] a problem we have it might be poverty it might be it might be the issue of

[00:05:04] welfare it could be the issue of abortion it could be any kind of issues education and people are making a

[00:05:12] diagnostic claim about it okay here’s the problem with our education system or here’s the problem with our

[00:05:18] political system here’s the problem with our our process of confirming Supreme

[00:05:24] Court nominees whatever it might be and if the diag not the the diagnosis is

[00:05:31] false if it’s a bad diagnosis well then you end up potentially trying to find a

[00:05:37] solution that doesn’t fit that doesn’t work or worst case scenario you end up

[00:05:43] breaking cysts something that wasn’t broken in the first place so I mean from a doctor’s perspective right my daughter

[00:05:49] has cystic fibrosis and and we we she has to go in and get a g-tube because

[00:05:56] she’s she needs to gain weight and what they’ve noticed in those who studies cystic fibrosis is that if a child has

[00:06:03] high weight gain at a young age they do much better later on in life as well and so the doctors are concerned as are we

[00:06:11] my wife and I that if she doesn’t gain weight she’s not going to be as well-off later on and so for that reason she

[00:06:16] needs to get a g-tube basically a feeding tube in order to make sure that her weight goes up now this is there is

[00:06:24] this is correlation it’s not necessarily causation they don’t know for sure why it is that kids with a higher weight do

[00:06:31] better later on in life but the correct diagnosis in medicine is critically important in order to help a

[00:06:38] person be healthier right well the same thing goes for society and culture if you make a diagnosis and it’s the wrong

[00:06:44] diagnosis for the problem then you end up really potentially causing more hurt

[00:06:50] than than good and so I kind of want to challenge what John Green said overall

[00:06:55] he seems like a super nice guy really passionate and a very caring person but

[00:07:02] I don’t know if he I don’t believe he deliberately leaves some of the information out or not but this is what

[00:07:09] he says he says seventy-five percent of white Americans do not think there is racial bias in the criminal justice system and a slight majority of white

[00:07:16] Americans don’t think that racism is a significant problem in America now that’s a lot of people to say they don’t

[00:07:24] think there’s racial bias obviously there is another portion of population that says yes there is racial bias and

[00:07:31] we want to get down to the root of what’s really going on here why do you have so many people that say no there’s no racial problems and then you have so

[00:07:37] many people over here that say yes there is racial problems we need to we need to deal with this issue because it creates

[00:07:43] a lot of tension between different racial groups and as a Christian as a

[00:07:49] bible-believing Christian the Bible is very clear that I’m to be at peace with all men as much as it is possible to

[00:07:56] live at peace with all people and the Bible is also very clear that there is no Jew or Greek there is no slaver free

[00:08:02] there is no male or female and in that in that statement that Paul is making he’s specifically saying that race God

[00:08:11] does not show partiality on race he doesn’t show partiality on status and he

[00:08:16] doesn’t show partiality on sex that that God looks at people and says I love all

[00:08:21] people all people are to be treated fairly and equally and so as a bible-believing Christian if

[00:08:27] there really is systemic racism in America I need to be very concerned about it because it would be something that God is concerned about the question

[00:08:33] is is there really systemic racism and let me let me define the word systemic systemic means system-wide it means it

[00:08:40] affects all areas of culture so it affects education healthcare the criminal justice system it affects

[00:08:47] retirement affects being able to get a job your appointment your finances it affects education this is the claim being made

[00:08:55] by many people today including John Green and the question is why is that the claim he actually goes so far as to

[00:09:02] say it is not a debatable point that systemic racism exists against African

[00:09:09] Americans that’s an even bolder claim and he considers himself an intellectual

[00:09:14] somebody who it sounds to me somebody who’s open-minded who’s liberal who considers the facts

[00:09:21] who looks at the evidence who uses reason rationale rationality and logic to come to conclusions I find it a bit

[00:09:29] of a red flag anybody anytime somebody essentially wipes out different opinions

[00:09:35] by saying this is not a debatable point that freaks me out because he’s against

[00:09:41] fascism but honestly that sounds like fascism to me it’s a clever manipulative

[00:09:46] way of saying why are you even allowed to talk it’s not a debatable point also

[00:09:52] let me explain what he means well I think there’s a general definition of racism but interestingly enough the word

[00:09:59] racism the definition is changing and you may have may or may not have noticed this but there’s a there’s a strategy

[00:10:07] among those who you know among those who consider this an OK way to argue to

[00:10:15] actually change the meaning of words now because I am constantly debating creation and evolution I’m very familiar

[00:10:22] with this tactic when it comes to the debate over creation and evolution because the it’s it’s it’s a fallacy

[00:10:28] it’s called equivocation and it’s anytime you take the generally accepted

[00:10:33] meaning of a word and you change that deaf definition mid argument in order to

[00:10:39] try to gain ground in your in your attempt to persuade people to your

[00:10:45] perspective so for example for the longest time the word evolution was used in Darwinian evolution as change

[00:10:52] molecules to man evolution meaning change from one kind of animal into another right lizard – bird bird –

[00:10:58] mammal a mammal – ocean mammal and on and on and on but

[00:11:03] recently in my debates with atheists and those who promote the idea of evolution they’ve changed the meaning of the word

[00:11:10] evolution to mean change over time now nobody debates change over time

[00:11:15] that’s accepted but if I say I’m opposed to evolution and you say oh you’re opposed to change over time well it

[00:11:22] sounds like I’m crazy and so what happens is is all of a sudden there’s Chris in the window there

[00:11:28] all of a sudden I’m I’m starting to look different or the arguments getting

[00:11:34] confused because we’re changing the definition of the word evolution now as it pertains to racism what’s happening

[00:11:40] is is the definition of racism is being changed now the traditional definition of racism I’ll read it off to you here

[00:11:46] is prejudice discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a

[00:11:54] different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior this is the what I think people generally believe is

[00:12:01] racism now we do have to be a little bit careful you have to clarify the words racism stereotype discrimination and

[00:12:08] Prejudice these are these words are often used interchangeably and they’re

[00:12:13] not necessarily interchangeable so we want to we want to get the definitions

[00:12:19] of these words and then use them appropriately right the more clear we are in our communication the better we’re off we’re gonna be if you know if

[00:12:25] you’re married you know this is true if I say something to my wife and and the

[00:12:30] words that she hears come out of my mouth are perceived in a way that I didn’t intend for them to be perceived well we can end up you know having a

[00:12:37] much longer argument or discussion about whatever it is we’re talking about right so we want to be crystal clear in our

[00:12:44] communications I like the phrase say what you mean and mean what you say right so know what you’re saying

[00:12:52] don’t don’t be of this mind well you know what I meant right we often will say you know what I meant

[00:12:57] but the problem is too often the other person actually doesn’t know what we mean and so it generates tension and and

[00:13:05] so forth Hey so we have to take a real super-quick tiny break here we’re going to be right back please support our

[00:15:58] order to build a comprehensive systematic curriculum that helps you to be able to answer all the questions

[00:16:04] people have about God in the Bible so it’s online and it’s only $5 a month so

[00:16:15] faith in a way that people can understand and in an intelligible way using science logic history all those

[00:16:22] things in order to equip you to be able to share the good news of Jesus Christ the hope of the hope that God has given

[00:16:28] us through Jesus Christ now what we’re talking about today is we’re talking about the issue of racism and you know

[00:16:35] you might be thinking well why is this such an important issue well reason it’s an important issue you know I was asked

[00:16:41] by my by my pastor and by the principal

[00:16:46] of the school that I teach at I teach 12th graders and they said hey we’d like you to prepare students to be able to

[00:16:51] deal with the issues that they’re gonna face in college and one of the issues that I think really kind of causes kids

[00:16:58] to fumble or stumble is the issue of race relations and and the reason is is

[00:17:03] because some people will say hey the Bible is a book that promotes slavery it promotes racism it promotes sexism it

[00:17:11] promotes things like homophobia or or bigotry and

[00:17:17] this is this couldn’t be further from the truth it’s a slander against the Bible that is blatantly false now you

[00:17:24] might say no I had a student actually asked me but mr. Conover doesn’t the Bible teach that homosexuality is wrong

[00:17:29] and I said well yeah it does teach that it’s wrong but that’s not the same as homophobia homophobia in this particular

[00:17:37] case is an unreasonable fear of for example homosexuality right an

[00:17:43] unreasonable fear that that makes no sense now you know I’m opposed to quote

[00:17:48] fornication right sex outside of marriage but it’s not doesn’t mean I’m afraid quote of people that have sex

[00:17:55] outside of marriage I’m a Pope I’m opposed to theft but it doesn’t mean I’m afraid of thieves and I’m also opposed

[00:18:01] to the homosexual lifestyle because not because I’m afraid of homosexuals I have

[00:18:08] relatives that are homosexual I have friends that are homosexual I’ve had many discussions with people that are

[00:18:14] engaged in the homosexual lifestyle but I’m opposed to it because the Bible says

[00:18:20] it’s wrong and the Bible has good reasons for why it says it’s wrong just briefly 60% of all new HIV AIDS cases or

[00:18:29] among male homosexuals even though they only make up 2% of the population over 60 percent of all new syphilis cases or

[00:18:35] among male homosexuals even though they make up only 2% of the population well that’s significant and that’s

[00:18:40] something the media and the popular culture has kind of suppressed because

[00:18:46] they they are afraid of the consequences of sharing that information what is what

[00:18:51] is going to happen if we if that information gets out and people broadcast that information and so it has

[00:18:57] nothing to do with being afraid of it it’s something that we need to talk about racism is something that a lot of

[00:19:03] people are afraid to talk about because they’re afraid of being accused of being racist right a lot of times students you

[00:19:10] know students jokingly in my classes will will say that’s racist you know if I we’re talking about

[00:19:18] something and they’re offended by something I say even though it has nothing at all to do with racism a student will yell out that’s racist and

[00:19:24] they think it’s funny because basically anytime there’s something that they don’t like I got a bad grade that’s

[00:19:30] racist right they yell this out it’s it’s it’s ridiculous but it’s it’s actually kind

[00:19:35] of telling as to where our culture is today which is that people are crying

[00:19:41] racism for issues that have nothing at all to do with racism and I would actually argue that john green’s video

[00:19:50] which is the title of visit racism in the united states by the numbers actually a lot of what he’s quoting has

[00:19:57] nothing to do with racism and so let’s talk about this a little bit more here’s

[00:20:03] what he says in in the video he says systemic racism is everywhere

[00:20:09] that’s what it means systemic racism he says last year the US Sentencing Commission released a report showing

[00:20:15] that African American men’s prison sentencing which on at what was on average twenty percent longer than white

[00:20:21] men’s sentences when convicted of similar crimes he goes on to say black

[00:20:26] people and white people use drugs at identical rates but black people are three times more likely to be arrested

[00:20:32] for drug possession they’re far more likely to be stopped and searched by

[00:20:37] police even though the contraband hit rate is higher among white people meaning when somebody is stopped they’re

[00:20:43] actually caught with drugs more often if they’re white than if they’re black he goes on to say black kids are more

[00:20:49] likely to be tried as adults than white kids and more likely to be sentenced to life in prison after release black

[00:20:55] former inmates are less likely to get callbacks from job interviews than white former inmates regardless of the crime

[00:21:01] and then there’s a very popular study that he quotes this was done back in

[00:21:07] 2004 where they submitted applications to two businesses the applications were

[00:21:15] generally identical except for the names so they used stereotypical white names

[00:21:20] in some of the resumes and then they used stereotypical black names in others

[00:21:25] and they said they sent them back and they said look at there was only 50% callbacks on on these resumes now the

[00:21:35] the people who quoted it from the study their numbers were actually off that ended up being only around 33%

[00:21:41] 33% less callbacks but it still seemed to indicate hey this

[00:21:48] is a racist issue now here’s the difficulty though was saying this about

[00:21:53] and this was John one of John Green’s key points was this is what makes it racist is the fact that these people

[00:22:01] with black names didn’t get callbacks as much as the people with white names therefore this must be racist

[00:22:07] now let’s differentiate between racism and stereotyping okay a stereotype is a

[00:22:14] widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of

[00:22:19] person or thing now staring at some stereotypes are relatively harmless and

[00:22:26] others are not so harmless I would say that stereotyping in general is probably

[00:22:31] something we want to stay away from now people all over the place make generalizations about certain things you

[00:22:40] know it’s not politically correct but the fact of the matter is is that the majority of terrorist attacks happen

[00:22:47] from Muslims now of course does this mean that all Muslims want to make

[00:22:52] terrorist attacks of course not and to stereotype that way would be wrong most

[00:22:58] Muslims are not radical Muslims this stat is that it’s about 10 to 15 percent that are radical and and so a generalist

[00:23:07] but is the generalization fair the majority of terrorist attacks are among Muslims that’s actually absolutely true

[00:23:14] and so if somebody would were to make a generalization that most terrorist attacks are by Muslims then that is not

[00:23:22] a false generalization now to stereotype and say that all Muslims are terrorists

[00:23:27] of course that’s that’s not appropriate racism specifically is saying that

[00:23:33] because of a person’s race right which is immutable which you can’t change your

[00:23:38] race you are what you are racism says that’s the way you are and you will always be that way because of

[00:23:45] the race that you are that’s racism racism literally is saying it’s in your

[00:23:51] DNA you are this way because of your race now racism is evil because nobody has

[00:23:58] an immutable characteristic because of their race other than maybe skin color you don’t have a characteristic that you

[00:24:06] will be more likely to commit crime or you will be less you will be more lazy now there are cultural influences so you

[00:24:13] can have a particular race that has a lot of cultural influences that affect the way they live right so there’s no

[00:24:20] doubt about it but we can’t confuse nature over a nurture right races nature

[00:24:26] but the way they grow up in culture with the way a person grows up in culture is race so I have a German background my

[00:24:33] mother my mother’s parents are from Germany they are very very proud of the fact that they work very hard and that

[00:24:41] they’re very good with money right that Germany today has next to no debt

[00:24:47] they’re very very good with their money German cars they’re very proud of their German cars their engineering is very

[00:24:53] precise and very good and so that’s a cultural thing though that’s not a race

[00:24:59] thing so you can’t say all Germans are good at engineering because because that

[00:25:06] would be essentially a type of racism although typically racism has a negative

[00:25:12] stereotype with it or a negative connotation so but the stereotype or the

[00:25:18] generalization by the way stereotyping generally has a negative connotation also so you might

[00:25:23] say you might use a stereotype negatively but you make a generalization that’s not necessarily bad right so so

[00:25:32] when it comes to issues like employers you may have employers that are

[00:25:38] generalizing or stereotyping which isn’t good but it’s not racism so for example

[00:25:44] let’s say you have a white employer in Chicago and this guy sends out has it has a job opening and he gets all these

[00:25:51] applications now he may not even know he’s doing this but he may have had bad experiences with black employees that he

[00:25:59] had and so what does he do he has now stereotyping he’s not saying

[00:26:05] necessarily that all blacks are a particular way but because of his experience he may generalize

[00:26:12] that now that’s not necessarily a good thing it’s not a good thing but the fact of the matter is is that’s different

[00:26:17] from racism and and you might say you know I’m splitting hairs but we want to

[00:26:24] parse this information out we want to understand what is the real issue here because if we identify and we say that

[00:26:32] the issue here is racism when in fact it doesn’t have to do with racism then we

[00:26:37] are going to be barking up the wrong tree it’s like having a broken arm and going into the doctor and they give you

[00:26:43] a cast on your leg and the problem has not been fixed so here you’ve said you

[00:26:49] know what here’s the problem all these employers in Chicago where they did this study they’re all racist and the issue

[00:26:55] isn’t racist racism it’s that their experience with the black community in

[00:27:00] Chicago has been has been more negative than positive and so now what happens is

[00:27:07] I’m saying if this is the case I’m not saying that is the case but I’m saying that could be the case what’s happening

[00:27:13] here and it’s not a matter of them thinking that whites are better than blacks or Asians are better than blacks

[00:27:19] or anything like that it just has to do with their own experience it has nothing to do with racism again we need to

[00:27:26] differentiate between racism stereotyping there are two other words that are important to understand and

[00:27:31] that is discrimination and the word prejudice we are coming up on a break

[00:27:36] here again real soon and so we’re gonna pick up on this I’m gonna define the

[00:27:42] word discrimination for you and the word prejudice and we’ll talk about Oh specifically what those mean and how

[00:27:47] those apply and then we’re going to talk about I’m gonna give you some other facts to see it in a different perspective maybe the issue isn’t racism

[00:27:53] that we’re dealing with so stay with me I’ll be right

[00:30:03] hey thanks for being here today this is Kevin Conover you’re on educate for life radio we’re broadcasting from Southern

[00:30:09] California we’re in a studio here up in UTC and what we’re doing is we’re

[00:30:15] talking about racism today and specifically as it pertains to defending

[00:30:20] the Bible you know a lot of people have accused the Bible at one point or another of slavery they’ve said hey the

[00:30:26] Bible promotes slavery now in the Old Testament the Bible actually says that if you were too caught if you were to be

[00:30:31] caught kidnapping somebody and you were too found be found in possession with of them you would actually be put to death

[00:30:37] and so people take some scriptures out of context and the Leviticus I believe it’s chapter 25 where they they say hey

[00:30:44] look the Bible promotes slavery but the slavery in the Old Testament was not like the slavery of the pre Civil War

[00:30:50] South it was it specifically dealt with indentured servitude that the ability to pay off debts and so in their culture

[00:30:57] when you went into a certain amount of debt the way you worked it off was through basically a servant relationship

[00:31:03] until you paid that debt off or seven years past all debts were forgiven every seven years

[00:31:09] if until you pay that off you were to be working for that person and you’d get

[00:31:14] room and board but you wouldn’t get paid until you paid your debt off and so that

[00:31:20] that’s the Bible is anti-slavery the Bible is opposed to slavery Christ said he came to set free the oppressed the

[00:31:28] whole book of Philemon is Paul arguing with Onesimus about why he should I’m sorry Paul arguing with Philemon about

[00:31:34] why he should set Onesimus free a slave free and we constantly see the Bible say

[00:31:41] that all people are created equal the whole book of Acts is about or in acts that specifically says that we are

[00:31:48] all of one blood we’re all from the same father and so the Bible is opposed to slavery it is not for slavery it’s also

[00:31:55] opposed to racism the Bible says that God shows no partiality he doesn’t show partiality between races it doesn’t show

[00:32:02] partiality between sexes and he doesn’t show partiality between status over and over and over again it criticizes

[00:32:08] anybody that treats somebody better because of because of their financial status or whatever the whole parable of

[00:32:14] the of the Samaritan Jesus is lifting up the Samaritan who the Jews were actually racist against at the time the

[00:32:21] Samaritans they considered half-breeds and so God actually honors the Samaritan

[00:32:27] and says that you should treat the Samaritan fairly right love your neighbor as yourself the Bible says to love your enemies and pray for those who

[00:32:34] persecute you so the Bible is very anti-racist racism anti-slavery now

[00:32:39] today by and large the Republican Party has a lot of conservative voices in it

[00:32:47] meaning people who base their philosophical views off the judeo-christian foundation but

[00:32:52] Republicans are frequently accused of racism of bigotry and so the question is

[00:33:00] is why is this happening why are why are people that espouse the judeo-christian religion which is completely anti-racist

[00:33:08] and anti-slavery why are they saying that they are racist now John Green is

[00:33:15] who I’m kind of using here to talk about his viewpoint he published a video

[00:33:21] called racism in the United States by the numbers and it’s gotten millions of

[00:33:27] hits it’s it’s up over a million hits and in it he says that in education there is evidence of systemic bias now

[00:33:35] one of the things that John Green does in this video is he switches between systemic bias and systemic racism which

[00:33:42] again I I think is a mistake because bias is not the same as racism racism is

[00:33:49] specifically if we look at the definition of racism it’s specifically

[00:33:55] believing that your race is superior to another person’s race now remember race

[00:34:00] is immutable which means there’s nothing that person can do to make themselves better in your eyes you are immutably

[00:34:07] better than they are because we can’t change our race so racism is especially

[00:34:13] evil because of this now the word racism is being redefined currently and this is

[00:34:19] important for you to know if you’re ever going to have a discussion about this subject the word racism is being

[00:34:25] redefined to mean a majority that oppresses a minority

[00:34:31] through whatever methods that’s racism so if you’re in the minority there are

[00:34:37] many people who are now saying you can’t be racist if you’re in the minority because racism by definition is when the

[00:34:43] majority oppresses a minority a majority race oppresses a minority race now you

[00:34:48] may not like that definition personally I don’t like it I think it’s equivocation it’s changing the

[00:34:54] definition of a word in mid-sentence and it’s basically saying that any minority

[00:34:59] cannot be racist only in America because whites are the majority race only whites can be racist now this is ludicrous to

[00:35:07] me and it seems like pure manipulation and a period of a huge double standard essentially saying that a minority can

[00:35:15] do anything to a white person and it will never be considered racist they say it might be considered bigoted it might

[00:35:21] be considered prejudiced but it’s not racist now this is this is crazy to me

[00:35:27] but as a as a bible-believing Christian right and the Scriptures say that we’re

[00:35:33] to show ourselves approved a workman who does not need to be ashamed somebody who can intelligently communicate truth and

[00:35:39] who can demolish arguments that set themselves up against the knowledge of God that’s what the Bible says that’s what we’re supposed to be able to do so

[00:35:46] we have to be informed on these summaries so part of my ability to be able to communicate effectively about

[00:35:51] the issue of racism is to understand what other people mean when they talk about racism so even though I don’t

[00:35:57] agree with this new definition of racism it’s a very important that I understand what that definition is now there is a

[00:36:05] big difference between systemic bias and systemic racism and so I think John

[00:36:11] Green made a mistake here where he’s using these terms interchangeably racism specifically has to do with that as a

[00:36:19] that a person of that race is that way and there’s no way around it that’s the

[00:36:24] way they are there’s no it’s an immutable characteristic like eye color or hair color or whatever else systemic bias is

[00:36:32] different you may have systemic bias and the bias may be for a reason that

[00:36:40] I don’t I don’t want to say it’s a it’s a morally okay reason but I want to say that the bias may exist for reasons that

[00:36:48] are logical so you may have a particular culture that acts a certain way and

[00:36:54] because of that other people and I know this happens because I have students in

[00:37:01] a particular culture I’m not going to say the culture it’s not black but there’s a culture here in San Diego there you have a very strong presence

[00:37:08] and I have students in that culture that will say to me mr. Conover this is the

[00:37:13] way we are and they’ll say I’m not that way but this is the way our culture is and I have students at my school it’s a

[00:37:22] Christian school where they say my parents specifically put me in this school to get me away from my peers in

[00:37:29] my own culture from my own race because they don’t like this about our culture

[00:37:34] the way we act in this regard now that’s not racism that’s just bias and that

[00:37:41] would be considered quote you know in in that culture systemic bias but the bias

[00:37:47] is therefore a very logical reason now the reason it’s important to identify this is because where where does the

[00:37:56] solution come from if it’s systemic racism then the problem is actually with

[00:38:02] the offending race that is racist but if it’s systemic bias it may actually be

[00:38:09] the culture that is violating some

[00:38:14] principle that is actually needs to need to have the solution I hope I hope this

[00:38:20] is clear that didn’t sound totally clear but so here’s what I mean if it’s systemic racism then the problem are is

[00:38:27] that whites are being racist against blacks but if it’s systemic bias then it

[00:38:32] could very well be that it’s something about black culture that has to change okay now now the reality is is if you

[00:38:42] watch Larry elders view he’s a political pundit if you watch his video on the

[00:38:47] problem that blacks are facing he says the problem is not racism he says it’s specifically the apps

[00:38:54] of black fathers if you look at the stats on fathers in America right now

[00:39:02] President Barack Obama said this he said that if you don’t have a father in the home you have five times their child is

[00:39:09] five times more likely to be in poverty and a commit crime they’re nine times more likely to drop out of school and

[00:39:14] they’re 20 times more likely to end up in prison kids who never had a father in

[00:39:20] the house are the most likely to end up in jail well in 1960 only five percent

[00:39:25] of American kids didn’t have a father but as of 2015 41 percent of American

[00:39:32] kids do not have fathers and if we look at the discrepancy between whites and blacks there’s a huge discrepancy and

[00:39:38] now we’re coming up on a break here but I’m going to break that down and I’m gonna talk a little bit about something

[00:39:45] catch words you hear around right now hot-button words white privilege and you

[00:39:51] know what is going on here with this idea of white privilege we’ll talk about that too and just to equip you to be

[00:39:57] able to have an intelligent conversation about these sorts of things so I hope you’re enjoying the program so far we’ll be right back

[00:41:41] [Music] hey thanks for being here today I hope

[00:41:46] you’re enjoying the program so far for just tuning in we’re talking about a pretty touchy subject racism and it’s

[00:41:52] important to talk about it because this is a issue that comes up frequently in discussions when we’re talking about

[00:41:58] elections or politics or whatever and you know what I’m what I’m talking about here on the air today and what I talk

[00:42:05] about every show is a biblical worldview is how do you take what the Bible has for us and then take that out into all

[00:42:12] the different areas of life that we have whether it’s marriage raising children

[00:42:17] politics all Education Culture everywhere and so this is an issue

[00:42:24] that’s very significant and important to be able to dialogue about a lot of people are afraid to talk about race and

[00:42:30] race issues because they’re if they don’t want to be they don’t want to offend people people as emotions run

[00:42:36] super hot on this but it’s important that we have honest discussions about

[00:42:41] these rather than shying away from it and be as loving as we possibly can about these issues because because

[00:42:48] they’re very important I’ve done several shows that are related to the issue of race I had Star Parker on my program a

[00:42:56] while back if you don’t know who star Parker is I encourage you to get to know her her minute her organization is

[00:43:02] called cure and she specifically is fighting poverty she believes that the

[00:43:08] Democrat Party specifically actually generates poverty for blacks because of

[00:43:14] their policies she believes that the policies actually generate poverty among

[00:43:20] blacks she I did a great show with her I also interviewed a former Black Panther Mason Weaver he has a phenomenal

[00:43:29] testimony about how Christ saved him he was extremely racist he actually had a

[00:43:34] racist try to kill him a white racist try to kill him here in San Diego he has an awesome book called it’s okay to

[00:43:39] leave the plantation he again believes that the the main issue that blacks are

[00:43:46] dealing with today has nothing to do with racism but has a lot more to do with other issues and he does a great

[00:43:53] job of communicating that I also had three bla guys on my radio program to have kind of

[00:43:59] a roundtable discussion about racism at a black pastor and black college student

[00:44:05] to black college students on my show a while back and you can check those out on our youtube channel I also have

[00:44:13] talked with Richard Weikart who he shows the connection between Darwinian evolution Hitler and racism which is

[00:44:20] pretty stunning if you look at it but the evidence is all there if you follow the breadcrumbs you end up seeing the

[00:44:27] connection between a belief and Darwinian evolution and what Hitler was trying to achieve which was the super

[00:44:33] race the superior race and how racism impacted his thought process as well as

[00:44:40] many other people’s thought process even in our own country we have a horrible history of racism and most people don’t

[00:44:47] know this but racism was prolific among the Democrat Party in fact Abraham

[00:44:57] Lincoln is the one that started the Republican Party at the time of the Civil War there was no Republican that

[00:45:03] owned slaves not a single one all the slaves that were owned at the time of the Civil War were all owned by

[00:45:09] Democrats and for a lot of people this is super shocking they’re like what this can’t be true the Democrat Party is the

[00:45:15] party of equality they’re the party of you know economic equality racial

[00:45:20] equality and so forth and so people are surprised to hear that but here’s

[00:45:29] another pretty pretty amazing quote that a lot of people don’t know the the Democrats fought to stop the 13th 14th

[00:45:35] and 15th amendments which all had to do with abolishing slavery giving blacks the rights to vote and freedom for

[00:45:43] citizenship for blacks the Democrats won

[00:45:49] in the 13th amendment the Republicans passed it with a hundred percent support 77% of Democrats voted

[00:45:56] against it the Democrats also fought fought to block the 14th amendment that gave citizenship to blacks it passed

[00:46:02] with 94% of Republican support in Congress every single Democrat voted against it and then the 15th amendment

[00:46:12] which was supposed to give slaves the right to vote every Republican in Congress voted for the 15th amendment

[00:46:18] and every Democrat voted against it and this is a history that of course no

[00:46:24] democrat is proud of but the fact of the matter is is that this is what happened now I would argue that the reason this

[00:46:31] happened is because Republicans by and large had a strong belief in the Bible the judeo-christian religion and the

[00:46:38] Bible is adamantly opposed to racism it’s all for equality and it’s adamantly opposed to slavery William Wilberforce

[00:46:45] who single-handedly practically initially at least is the one who’s

[00:46:51] credited with abolishing slavery in the British Empire himself was motivated by his belief in the Bible and Christianity

[00:46:59] and so today when you look at the issue of racism and you have all these Republicans being accused of racism but

[00:47:06] how is this possible because most Republicans today their platform is

[00:47:11] grounded in judeo-christian a judeo-christian value system the whole reason that Republicans are pro-life is

[00:47:18] because of the judeo-christian value system that a baby is a human being at

[00:47:25] conception and so a lot of the the values within the Republican Party are

[00:47:32] based on Christianity so why is it that Republicans are then accused of racism

[00:47:37] well I would say that this is because of a of a misunderstanding of the issues

[00:47:45] that are relevant here the issue is not as much racism as black political pundit

[00:47:51] Larry elder says the issue is not racism the issue is a lack of fathers and if

[00:47:58] you look at the stats

[00:48:04] well Walter Williams he was an economist to black economists he said according to census data from 1890 to 1940 a black

[00:48:11] child was more likely to grow up with married parents than a white child but that was not that did not remain the

[00:48:18] case now in 1965 25 percent of black kids had no father

[00:48:24] but now 73 percent of black kids have no father that’s insane

[00:48:30] well you have three out of four black children that are growing up with no father and Barack Obama himself said

[00:48:37] that you’re 20 times more likely to end up in prison without a father well I

[00:48:42] think the evidence becomes crystal clear and my question for John Green is is why didn’t why didn’t he bring this up why

[00:48:49] didn’t he say anything about this he’s so influential he has over a million views just on that hit he has 3 over 3

[00:48:55] million subscribers and he claims to be a rational and intelligent person

[00:49:01] discussing racism and what does he promote he promotes the idea that there is systemic racism without ever

[00:49:09] mentioning the issues that 73 percent of black children grow up without a father

[00:49:15] and without addressing the fact that crime teen pregnancy poverty are all

[00:49:22] related to whether or not a father is in the household whites in 1965 less than 5

[00:49:29] percent grew up without a father today in 2015 or as of 2015 25 percent have no

[00:49:37] father now there’s still a huge discrepancy there and then Hispanics currently 24 percent in 1980 grew up

[00:49:46] without a father and now they’re over 53% in 2015 you know so here rather than

[00:49:52] crying racism racism racism why aren’t we talking about the state of the family why are we talking about fathers because

[00:49:59] that’s the real issue why aren’t marriages holding together and and once we get down to the root of

[00:50:05] the issue the real issue we can actually solve the problem but if we keep if we keep saying hey there’s a broken arm

[00:50:10] when there’s a broken leg we’re gonna keep trying to address a problem that doesn’t exist and all we’re doing is

[00:50:15] making people angry at each other and I would challenge anybody who keeps yelling racism that I don’t know either

[00:50:24] either you’re not looking close enough at the facts or somebody’s being

[00:50:29] deliberately dishonest in this particular situation you know there’s a

[00:50:37] quote from a Harvard sociologist he

[00:50:43] makes a pretty amazing statement this was a black liberal Harvard University sociologist Orlando Patterson he said

[00:50:49] America is that is now the least racist white majority Society in the world has

[00:50:56] a better record of legal protections to minorities than any other Society white or black and offers more opportunities

[00:51:03] to blacks than any other society including all of those in in Africa and

[00:51:09] multiple studies have confirmed that this is the case if you if you look at the different studies that have been

[00:51:15] done on what groups of people are the most racist what they found is actually the most racist groups are actually in

[00:51:20] the Middle East multiple studies have been done in which they confirm there’s

[00:51:26] not a single Western European Society that ranks in the top 25 of racist

[00:51:34] cultures what they did was they asked questions like would you be willing to live but next to somebody of another

[00:51:39] race and they did this study they did cultures all over the world would you be

[00:51:44] willing to live next to this person of another race and over and over again different countries said no absolutely not the the the country that was the

[00:51:52] whitest that had the most racist racist was Russia but no other Western European

[00:51:58] country even made the top 25 America was ranked as the least racist of all

[00:52:04] countries which is absolutely the opposite of what John Green is promoting and to me it’s

[00:52:12] it’s not only embarrassing coming from somebody who considers themselves an a

[00:52:18] rational intellectual nerd which he considers himself a nerd not a bad thing because nerds are often very smart but

[00:52:25] the fact of the matter is is how can he make this statement influencing so many people raising the tension level that

[00:52:32] racism is so common and the reason I’m in trouble as a minority is because of

[00:52:37] racism when in fact it’s exactly the opposite so I hope you’ve enjoyed the show today and I hope it’s been a

[00:52:44] blessing to you enlightening to you we’ve got all kinds of resources on our website if you’re interested in the link

[00:52:51] between Darwinian evolution and racism my class 1:09 on evolutionary ethics is a great resource for that it’s only $5 a

[00:53:04] about God in the Bible so I hope you’ll check it out there’s pre previews up there so you can you can look at them
