God, Stan Lee, and the Action Bible — Sergio Cariello

Superheroes have always captured our imagination — but what if that instinct for heroes is pointing us to something deeper? In this episode of The Educate for Life Podcast, host Kevin Conover explores the cultural impact of comic legends like Stan Lee while spotlighting the greatest Hero of all time: Jesus Christ. If you care about Christian education, building a resilient biblical worldview, or finding creative ways to disciple kids in a media-heavy age, this conversation will encourage you in a big way.

When God Redeems a Comic Book Dream

Kevin’s guest is Sergio Cariello, the celebrated artist behind The Action Bible. Before illustrating Scripture for millions of readers, Sergio spent years working with Marvel and DC Comics, drawing beloved characters like Spider-Man, Batman, and more. Yet his story isn’t just about talent — it’s about calling. Sergio shares how God shaped his life from childhood in Brazil to studying under legendary comic mentors and eventually stepping into a role that merged his love for comics with his love for Christ.

Together, Kevin and Sergio reflect on Stan Lee’s legacy and why superheroes resonate so deeply with human hearts. They discuss how Lee created heroes who weren’t perfect or untouchable — they struggled, suffered, and tried to do what was right. That theme opens the door to apologetic truth: our hunger for redemption and justice isn’t accidental. It’s part of being made in God’s image. And it’s why stories — even comic stories — can prepare hearts to hear the gospel.

Sergio also describes what it meant to illustrate the Bible in a way that helps kids, teens, and reluctant readers actually want to engage Scripture. His experience reminds Christian parents and homeschool families that creativity isn’t a distraction from faith — it can be a pathway into it.

Key Takeaways

  • Why superhero stories reflect a deeper, God-given longing for a true Savior
  • Sergio Cariello’s faith journey from Brazil to Marvel/DC to The Action Bible
  • How visual storytelling can support Christian parenting and homeschool discipleship
  • The surprising global reach of The Action Bible as an evangelism tool
  • Why excellence in Christian media matters in today’s skeptical culture

How We Can Help You

At Educate for Life, we’re passionate about helping families raise kids who can think biblically and stand confidently in a world full of competing narratives. Episodes like this one highlight the importance of shaping imagination with truth — not just entertainment. If you’re looking for a structured way to build faith at home, our Comprehensive Biblical Worldview Curriculum is designed to help teens connect Scripture to real-world issues with clarity and courage.

We also offer resources that pair beautifully with this episode’s theme of culture, creativity, and apologetics. Our Christian Apologetics courses equip students and parents to answer hard questions about God, the Bible, and salvation, while our Creation Science Curriculum for Kids strengthens trust in God’s Word from Genesis onward. Whether you’re homeschooling, teaching in a classroom, or just discipling around the dinner table, we want to help you point the next generation to Christ — the only Hero who truly saves.

Here’s a short excerpt from the episode:

[00:01:01] welcome to educate for life I’m your host Kevin Conover my website is educate for life dot o-r-g and if you are into

[00:01:09] comics at all you know there was a tragedy in the comic world this past week Stan Lee passed away on the 12th

[00:01:17] November 12th and if you know anything about him he led a pretty amazing life he invented a lot of my favorite

[00:01:24] superheroes including spider-man the x-men Iron Man Thor the Hulk the Fantastic Four Black Panther daredevil

[00:01:31] Doctor Strange ant-man all these different comic characters he he came up

[00:01:38] with or co-created with others he lived in 95 years old he did very well he was

[00:01:44] very well-off financially a lot of people don’t know he was raised I’m not in a real wealthy family but average

[00:01:51] family who’s raised in a Jewish family and in 2002 there was a survey taken and

[00:01:57] he was asked whether he believed in God he said well let me put it this way and then he paused for a moment he said no

[00:02:04] I’m not gonna try to be clever I really don’t know I just don’t know and you know we don’t know exactly where he fell

[00:02:13] in his beliefs about God when he passed away but the you know he wrote all about

[00:02:18] heroes and heroes are a big part of our culture I think they’re a big part of any culture really and I think what’s

[00:02:25] interesting about his heroes is that they were very human he wrote his

[00:02:32] characters with problems that a lot of people could identify with so you have spider-man he’s a high school kid you

[00:02:38] know dealing with trying to have a girlfriend and and I think that’s what makes a lot of his characters appealing

[00:02:44] you look at somebody like daredevil who was blind and was trying to overcome that and also a lot of his heroes had

[00:02:51] problems that people could identify with and yet at the same time there were people that people often looked up to

[00:02:58] even if it was just escapism even if they’re fictional characters it was something to escape from and we have a

[00:03:04] privilege of having a cartoonist an artist on the radio program today he

[00:03:09] used to work with DC and Marvel and is the artist for the action Bible which

[00:03:16] now has sold over a million copies worldwide and Sergio I wanted to just

[00:03:22] thank you for being on the program with us today Kevin it’s an honor and a privilege to

[00:03:28] be among you yeah and your story is pretty amazing itself how do you

[00:03:34] pronounce your last name Sergio well the American Way which I’m used to it’s

[00:03:40] Carrie yellow so I just think of a yellow car yellow yellow car yellow what’s the what’s the authentic

[00:03:47] Brazilian Way well the authentic authentic way would be Italian but oh

[00:03:54] I’m sorry okay yeah but I my grandfather gave us that last name but it will be

[00:04:01] carry handle and but since I was born in Brazil it would be carry yellow okay it

[00:04:08] means it means oh the carts so I’m used to either way Korea will carry a Lu

[00:04:16] doesn’t okay doesn’t offend you it doesn’t offend you if somebody mispronounces no no I I even like the

[00:04:22] Spanish accents they’re calling my name

[00:04:27] that’s great that’s great now you know I read I read a little bit about your

[00:04:33] story and and how you got interested in comics you’ve been you you said in your

[00:04:39] bio it says you started drawing as soon as you could hold a pencil yeah just

[00:04:45] something that came with it’s instinct on both my my brother and I and so we we

[00:04:53] had a tendency to fill services with strokes and my parents gave us

[00:04:59] sketchbooks to keep us away from the walls and the furniture yeah now did you did you cry when you found

[00:05:06] out that Stan Lee passed away this week no I did not I do not cry my heart

[00:05:13] pounded really really hard yeah I it’s

[00:05:19] something that I can’t explain just when I found that my heart pound is really hard yeah that’s that’s all they

[00:05:26] were student and a deep sadness to I felt but I

[00:05:32] didn’t cry I I and but I I should I should have I don’t know I I loved him

[00:05:39] he was great yeah yeah now so you went to school for you know it said the Joe

[00:05:48] Kubert school of cartoon and graphic art and so you learned how to do this and

[00:05:54] then when did you first start get involved in drawing for like DC and Marvel yeah Vidia the joke Hubert’s he

[00:06:05] was to me he was the best storyteller in

[00:06:12] my view and I loved his toys and comics

[00:06:17] from the 70s and sergeant Rock and enemy

[00:06:22] ace and his own caveman character and everything he did I really had a passion

[00:06:29] for what he did so even though I I’ve done comic strips in Brazil before

[00:06:35] coming to America and and I also I also worked in a small company called caliber

[00:06:42] smaller publisher called caliber press before I went to the team school and while I was still going to the Cuban

[00:06:48] school and and while I was still going to Marvel it was a was a fast-paced kind

[00:06:54] of thing but the Cuban school really equipped me better to learn all the

[00:07:00] tricks of the trade in the business which gave me the door to enter and

[00:07:06] marvel through the lettering Department and then in a bullpen and Marvel so I I

[00:07:11] started working as a penciler artist for

[00:07:17] Marvel after the editors saw that I could also draw on top of doing

[00:07:23] laterally because I was in what I was placed in a spot where the others could

[00:07:29] see my table my drawing table and so

[00:07:34] when I like finished my letter assignments I was working on that big on comic for caliber

[00:07:41] and they stopped this off you can draw too so they gave me work and I got so busy I had to quit the bull pen to do

[00:07:50] freelance dancing for Marvel for DC and then Joe Kubert gave me a job teaching

[00:07:57] at the school and I thought there for seven years so yeah my career in

[00:08:03] superhero comics in America started in in the early 90s 1991 any deal

[00:08:10] okay that’s great now what do you like best about about what are you like doing

[00:08:16] best in your career as you’ve done this all what what’s your favorite part to be drawing and to be doing what’s your what

[00:08:24] are you really enjoy doing I really

[00:08:29] enjoy having control of the of the product in totality I like having

[00:08:38] deciding who who should cover it which is leather my work and I don’t accept

[00:08:46] penciling jobs without me inking my work I used to have to accept that because

[00:08:53] that’s the the way things are they were done in superhero American comics but I

[00:09:02] grew up always having the mindset of inking my homework because I love not

[00:09:09] only American comics but I loved European comics Western comics shrinks

[00:09:17] comics and so I enjoyed drawing the

[00:09:23] whole thing and having the ability to decide where the balloons of the conversation will go and also deciding

[00:09:31] who should call in my work and well that that’s really interesting you know I

[00:09:37] love drawing when I was a kid and that was actually something I wanted to do my daughter is a really good artist and I’ve always loved comics I’ve always I

[00:09:45] collected comics for a little while and read comics a lot but I wanted to ask

[00:09:52] you you know about your relationship with the Lord and when because you you’ve drawn to action

[00:09:58] Bible you’ve you’ve done all that work and it must have been amazing to have that opportunity to write to really

[00:10:05] bring the stories in the Bible to life through comics and when we come back my

[00:10:12] guest today is Sergio Coryell oh and he is the artist for the action Bible he’s

[00:10:18] a former artist with DC and Marvel and we’re talking about this in light of the passing of Stanley and the impact of

[00:10:25] comics on American culture and really really on the world to a large degree and the the action Bible has now sold

[00:10:31] over a million copies so stay with us we’re gonna be right back this is Kevin Conover your listen to educate for life radio and my website is educate for

[00:12:22] on the action Bible comm and check it out so Sergio I wanted to ask you you

[00:12:30] know about your walk with the Lord as far as did you grow up in a Christian family and when did you when did you you

[00:12:37] know make your faith your own where you started to follow the Lord on your own and then how did that eventually

[00:12:43] translate into this opportunity to draw the action Bible alright

[00:12:50] great to be here Kevin and I my mother

[00:12:55] raised my brother and I taking us to Sunday school every Sunday so I I

[00:13:03] learned about the Lord at a very early age and because he prepared good works

[00:13:13] for me before the foundation of the earth according to Ephesians and

[00:13:19] according to Psalm 139 he broke the days of my days before any of them came to be

[00:13:27] he knew me before I knew him and he called me before I heard of him

[00:13:35] I answered to that call going through water-wise ministries in Recife Brazil

[00:13:42] when they had a Christian camp and

[00:13:48] because I wasn’t sure of my eternity the

[00:13:55] counselor asked me some hard questions and I I wanted to commit my life to

[00:14:00] is Christ and that happened in 1979 but I decided to follow how old were you

[00:14:06] when that happened 79 I was so the mmm I

[00:14:19] think I was 16 okay yeah yeah well that that’s great

[00:14:27] and then and then so you you accepted Christ as your Savior and you were going

[00:14:33] to the Word of Life I saw on your bio you went to the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York also

[00:14:41] that’s right that’s right I i I went to the the Bible in an 81 in

[00:14:52] Brazil first and then because I always

[00:14:59] wanted to do comics I always wanted to

[00:15:05] do comics since I was five and I remember in the early 70s I loved not

[00:15:14] only all the probability comics but I loved one Christian comic called the

[00:15:21] picture button it was it was published by the same company lady C cook who

[00:15:28] publish the actual Bible and I remember that that was part of my dream not only

[00:15:34] to draw superheroes but also I thought it would be cool if I could do something like that when I grew up women migrated

[00:15:43] to America which was my dream so I I

[00:15:49] followed through going to churches and getting to know a lot of people in God’s

[00:15:56] family in seminary and stuff and a pastor from Holland was in the city he

[00:16:03] was good friends he won one of these sons and in daughter daughter what he

[00:16:13] had seven kids but his family attended ward of life and also the Bible by the way student new

[00:16:18] yarn I became part of the family he was involved in my my dream to come to

[00:16:24] America he he knew somebody who lived in New Jersey and he also knew that George

[00:16:30] spies who was a director in 81 water life became a director in in in America

[00:16:37] in upstate New York so he brought a ladder to George telling George how I was doing and how he III wanted to come

[00:16:45] to America and George gave me a scholarship to come to obscene New York

[00:16:50] and at the same time or or in a mental at all I found I I used to go to an

[00:17:01] airport when we had the American comics because in Brazil way back when the

[00:17:06] comics were really linked we were behind when I was reading spider-man sidqa

[00:17:14] spider-man from 1960s in America you already had a Ross Andru on the issue

[00:17:22] two hundred and something okay yeah so everything so if I wanted to know the

[00:17:28] future I would go to the airport and read the American comes in color yeah

[00:17:33] but in my childhood we we had to read four or five issues collected in one so

[00:17:40] we only saw one cover of for every four issues and everything was black and white and in Portuguese so I I was

[00:17:48] really one of Batman comics at the airport in the back of the comic I saw the ad for the Cuban school GOP which go

[00:17:55] into Jersey and I had killed shoes going up my spine and I and I and I just I

[00:18:02] knew that I I was destined to go that’s who I just knew it I’m gonna go attend

[00:18:07] that school so in the midst of getting the scholarship to come to one of my

[00:18:13] fabulous do not say New York as soon as I did one year and a half of sunny the

[00:18:20] Bible then also learning how to preach or second year school of youth ministries I also applied to the Cuban

[00:18:28] school and I I was interviewed by Joe Kubert himself over the phone and I was

[00:18:33] accepted I had no idea that that I how I

[00:18:40] would pay for that so there was one pastor who went to went to the the water

[00:18:49] fights camp in New York and he lived in Manhattan and he invited me to work for

[00:18:58] the church in exchange to sentence to the cue school so I went to the cue

[00:19:03] school I was a janitor at this church in Manhattan and and and then my brother he

[00:19:17] got to work for four caliber press that small publisher that I mentioned earlier

[00:19:23] before I did me and he and he didn’t

[00:19:28] have time to finish everything he was involved with and said oh I have my brothers in America why don’t you try him that’s when I got to draw a gun or

[00:19:36] four caliber and and because of that they go and I was excused from some

[00:19:42] homework assignments at the Q School and also had three students working for me

[00:19:51] for the book and one feature was and and

[00:19:56] then I met some Christian teachers who requested me to do some some

[00:20:03] illustrations for their books al experience had a book called glory to God and I drew Jesus Karen cross and one

[00:20:11] of his books and that growing was used in another Christian publisher comics 35

[00:20:21] as well as Provident terrible store for Christian Art Society

[00:20:27] so my going got I did something for Alex that was published in clean different

[00:20:36] publications and wild ABC cook the company of the picture by

[00:20:42] was looking for somebody to invent the old picture bug that I saw in its

[00:20:47] seventies when I was a kid they saw my drawing then when I saw my drawing Jesus came to cross they asked me if I wanted

[00:20:55] to reinvent the picture Bible Wow and and I said of course yeah what an

[00:21:02] incredible opportunity yes so they saw in that I had worked on Hulk

[00:21:09] what a woman spider-man Batman adventures all of this iconic

[00:21:16] superheroes yeah it’s fight a man so they they thought well I think we got artists guys

[00:21:26] I can reinvent the picture Baba to be more like superhero comic so so that was

[00:21:34] there was a December of our everything happened wow that is really great my guest today is Sergio Carrie yellow and

[00:23:03] thanks for listening today this is educate for life your I’m your host Kevin Conover scuse me and today we’re

[00:23:11] talking to Sergio Sergio Coryell oh and he is the the artist for the action

[00:23:16] Bible and you can check out all his stuff on the action Bible calm they have all kinds of resources that are

[00:23:23] available for things like VBS for what Vacation Bible School for curriculums

[00:23:29] for preteens they even have some kind of videos to that that that are being

[00:23:34] developed and I was reading the stats on on what’s happening I’ll share that a little bit more with you about how many

[00:23:41] languages they’ve now translated the action Bible into but I thought I’d share some interesting stats on comics

[00:23:47] here it says here the most expensive comics ever sold amazing fantasy number

[00:23:53] 15 it was the first appearance of spider-man sold for 1 million $100,000 now that is unreal whoever has that

[00:24:00] there they’re good to go there x-men number one sold for four hundred and ninety thousand The Incredible Hulk

[00:24:07] number one sold for three hundred and twenty six thousand Captain America comics number one sold for three hundred

[00:24:13] thousand and so pretty pretty crazy I’m kicking myself because when I was a kid

[00:24:19] I actually had a Wolverine number one which I don’t know how much it’s worth now but I I didn’t realize how much

[00:24:25] comics were worth and I threw it in the trash can after I decided I was too big for comics but oh ha but um

[00:24:33] Sergio I wanted to ask you you know you were talking about how well I want to

[00:24:38] ask you do you have a superhero that you are you are you an Avengers a fan or a

[00:24:45] DC fan Marvel fan or do you have a superhero that’s your favorite superhero

[00:24:51] well my my favorite superhero for Marvel’s spider-man I love spider-man like you said in the

[00:25:02] introduction of the program I love how Peter Parker was a simple

[00:25:10] nerdy guy that had all kinds of problems with girls and problems for the cold

[00:25:17] you know and problems with his boss and bullying and all very very attractive

[00:25:25] quacks yeah I’m lost I loved everything about it yeah and

[00:25:32] from DC I love that man more than anything and I’m I think I was able to

[00:25:39] draw both of them for these companies yeah that’s incredible and were those

[00:25:44] your your favorite characters to draw also was was I do way more than

[00:25:53] spider-man spider-man I do in in a few

[00:25:59] issues seeing there was he was a guest work and also was able to inked in over

[00:26:06] other artists but Batman I drew mostly for DC and but I enjoy drawing more

[00:26:22] organic stuff than then structure strong cat so III enjoy Tarzan better because

[00:26:30] we had organic trees and rocks and grass and stuff as opposed to join buildings

[00:26:37] and and I’ll be fully by here if I had

[00:26:43] to draw spider-man monthly all the buildings and everything all the

[00:26:49] architecture and perspectives and stuff like that I can I can do it all well I

[00:26:54] have my preposition yeah yeah that makes sense now do you keep up on do you keep up on the movies at all do you watch The

[00:27:00] Avengers movies or any of that kind of thing the most part I haven’t seen

[00:27:06] everything but I loved the first fight

[00:27:11] of the movie that I mean not not the old

[00:27:17] from the sixes I’m talking about the the first spider-man right yeah in a big

[00:27:27] screen III saw there was amazing I thought it was amazing I I

[00:27:34] kept thinking I wonder how Staley is feeling right now because this is pretty

[00:27:39] accurate too so the 1960 spider-man but I know yeah you’re talking about the one

[00:27:46] with Tobey Maguire right yes yeah yeah I thought that was amazing yeah to me that

[00:27:54] was the best for me that’s God of all the movies that was the best for me because because spider-man is so special

[00:28:00] to me yeah yeah yeah that was they really nailed that Tobey Maguire did such a good job of playing Peter Parker

[00:28:07] I thought that was amazing yeah yeah well I wanted to ask you so you know the

[00:28:14] when you started it how long did it take you to I mean did were you the only one doing the drawings on the action Bible

[00:28:22] how long did it take you to finish that yeah I was the only artist hired to do

[00:28:28] it they had a tryout for different artists

[00:28:33] when they asked me if I wanted to do it I said sure they gave me a couple weeks

[00:28:39] to do couple pages of pencils on David

[00:28:45] and Goliath so the next day I submitted the pages

[00:28:52] pencils ink and colors and letters and everything so that’s how one how bad I

[00:28:57] want it yeah and they were sold high and I they was showed but they told me surgery it’s so quick we had to wait for

[00:29:04] the other guys but but they loved it so much the art team from from back then

[00:29:12] that they they they they made the soundtrack with their voices to sell me

[00:29:20] to the upper management said this young guy you know please hire him so I had no

[00:29:25] idea who the other guys work but it took me three years to accomplish i

[00:29:30] subcontracted seven colorists under my belt and i also got three ladders to go

[00:29:37] there laughing so that’s my dog barking

[00:29:43] sorry that’s okay problem well yeah so were you surprised

[00:29:49] at the success of the action Bible and how well it did and how it’s taken off I

[00:29:55] think we were all surprised even cook didn’t expect to sell that many and I

[00:30:03] must tell you that I while I was doing the action Bible also simultaneously was working on the Lone Ranger which is

[00:30:09] another favorite of mine that I drew for for a year for dynamite 24 issues and I

[00:30:18] also love Western so and I was joined will only injure the extra Bible and I

[00:30:25] also was doing some free chords and event and in a cartoony style son of

[00:30:31] Sensen and so I was busy the only three books simultaneously a lot of pages

[00:30:38] sorry I was my wife had to quit her full-time job to help me and everybody

[00:30:44] who is adoring some pages and pages and stuff I was it was the craziest three

[00:30:50] years of my life but there was definitely worth it yeah so I I really

[00:30:58] enjoyed having again control of the whole package and being able to to

[00:31:04] produce under my belt under my studio but only me drawing the they are by

[00:31:13] having help call it to light of it yeah and so what are your thoughts on you

[00:31:18] know as far as an evangelistic tool and and everything what are your thoughts on the impact of the action Bible and how

[00:31:26] it you know using it to share the gospel and the stories of the Bible around the

[00:31:32] world what are you what are your thoughts on that and thoughts of I’m in awe at how God

[00:31:42] has used this work of mine to be

[00:31:48] reaching the whole world then not only is sold over a million copies in it they

[00:31:55] didn’t have copies at one meeting that is in America alone but they would NC

[00:32:02] cook along with other organizations they they’ve been distributing freely only

[00:32:09] the the gossip portion of the extra Bible called the story of Jesus and this there’s an app on the Apple Store they

[00:32:14] can he can read the Sawyer Jesus and the various languages but they’ve distributed over fifty five million

[00:32:22] copies to the kids all over the world and I get reports from Muslim families

[00:32:32] from from Russia from Africa from and I

[00:32:41] traveled to Australia Africa India Brazil to Mexico because of the success

[00:32:47] of this book as a tool to evangelize and

[00:32:52] reach the world with these drawings so I think is a phenomena it’s beyond

[00:33:00] anyone’s expectations yeah as to how God has used this to impact the world yeah

[00:33:07] praise God it’s it’s just phenomenal and I mean you can see the the impact of

[00:33:12] comics on the culture and lord I was reading some articles on how a lot of people have said that Stan Lee’s

[00:33:18] influence for literacy it’s really helped a lot of kids to get into reading

[00:33:23] I know for me myself that made reading a lot more appealing knowing that I could read a comic book versus you know

[00:33:29] reading a book with no pictures and then like and then to think that at the same

[00:33:35] time you know a Bible with no no I was telling somebody about this interview before we did the interview and I and he

[00:33:40] said he said really there’s an action Bible he said well maybe I’ll read the Bible more then no so I think yeah a lot

[00:33:48] of people you feel that way they feel like wow if you could put some pictures to it that would make it a lot easier

[00:33:53] for me to be able to read it and that’s exactly what would have happened to many

[00:34:00] families husbands kids teenagers mothers and fathers and and kids that come to me

[00:34:08] to tell me at conventions how the actual Bible changed their life

[00:34:13] because they had no interest in a Bible text alone but the picked the action

[00:34:19] Bible gave them a clearer picture of the whole story from God’s perspective yeah

[00:34:27] a very attractive way that they could not put it down and made them understand

[00:34:32] the Bible better and made them to

[00:34:38] reconnect with God and become we commit their lives to walk with Christ yeah

[00:34:46] what was your what was your favorite part of to draw in the Bible what story

[00:34:52] to you was really exciting to draw those

[00:34:57] everything that had Jesus and I loved it though there was it was the most significant for me because since he is

[00:35:05] the Alpha and the Omega the center of the universe everything is under his feet he’s put over every power and every

[00:35:14] name on the universe to have the honor to draw my king was you know nothing

[00:35:23] short of that for me yeah yeah the ultimate hero right yeah what was for

[00:35:32] you what was the hardest thing to draw in the Bible what what for you was a struggle to put together the pictures to

[00:35:37] make it you know be clear to the reader was there anything whatever they had

[00:35:42] whatever they had Wars and thousands of people in the page that was pretty hard

[00:35:48] yeah yeah some of the stories in the Bible are just massive with all the people and everything but all the Jews

[00:35:57] parted see and all those people in the crowds sitting down to listen to Jesus

[00:36:07] yeah well for those of you listening my guest today is Sergio car yellow and he

[00:36:15] is the artist for the action Bible he’s also a former artist from Marvel Comics at DC Comics and has had a tremendous

[00:36:21] impact through the talents God has given him and through being obedient to the call

[00:36:27] that God put on his life to to use his talents to to glorify God and so we have

[00:36:34] one more segment left we’re gonna talk a little bit more about some of his personal views and the experience he went through with the action Bible and

[00:36:41] also how you can get yourself an action Bible too so stay with us we’re going to be right back

[00:38:25] shows why it’s there’s no way evolution could take place we talked about some really technical stuff ATP and

[00:38:32] production and so forth and he was a scientist for 50 years and we have all kinds of interviews with people from all

[00:38:39] over the world and how God has impacted their lives and then in turn God has

[00:38:44] used them to impact other’s lives so please check it out give us a subscribe and alike and I also have a full

[00:38:50] curriculum on my website educate for life org where you can check out how to

[00:38:56] defend your faith how to answer the hard questions people have about God in the Bible how do we know that the Bible is

[00:39:01] actually God’s Word and and what about the other religions that are out there what about the issue of creation and

[00:39:07] evolution and and all the difficult subjects that people ask about and they wonder about we cover those things on

[00:39:13] our website you can check it out and it’s great for homeschooling or for Bible studies all that kind of stuff and

[00:39:20] my guest today is Sergio Coryell oh and we’ve been talking about the action Bible and just to give you a few stats

[00:39:27] on it it’s been translated into more than eighty eight languages around the

[00:39:33] world and this was stats a little bit ago this was back in 2015

[00:39:38] three hundred and forty thousand units in in print and Brazil alone and they

[00:39:44] have translated the Jesus Christ booklet into more than fifty two languages it’s

[00:39:49] available in 95 countries with more than 49 million copies in circulation so if

[00:39:54] you are looking for a tool that is engaging and something that you can reach out to those around you with the

[00:40:01] way it’s drawn is absolutely phenomenal it’s just top-notch

[00:40:06] artwork by Sergio and you can check that out at the action Bible calm and if you

[00:40:13] go to their website you’ll also see that they have VBS they have a two-year long

[00:40:19] curriculum and they’ve got all kinds of other resources they’ve got it in so

[00:40:24] they’ve got the action Bible which is like an abbreviated version of the Bible in a sense but then they have full the

[00:40:30] full text of the the Bible also so they’ve got an NIV action Study Bible they’ve got an ESV action Study Bible so

[00:40:37] it’s just absolutely phenomenal and Sergey I was gonna ask you so what’s on the horizon for you now as

[00:40:44] you know you you finished that monumental task are you still doing work

[00:40:49] with David sea-cook and the action Bible or are there ongoing projects or what’s what’s next around the corner yes we we

[00:41:00] are constantly adding more the action by the brand because it’s such a high demand that it’s hard to not to nurture

[00:41:08] and to find new ways to increase the

[00:41:13] brand and to reach more people in different media and different types of

[00:41:20] products that can be attracting to different audiences so we have you know

[00:41:26] as you mentioned a few you have the audio Bible you have games and and I’m

[00:41:37] I’ll be joined more for cook and within

[00:41:44] the action by the brand I cannot talk about it much but all I can say is that

[00:41:49] you know more of the same different drawings from more Bible for you yeah

[00:41:57] that’s great of the the brand and that gives me opportunities to draw for other

[00:42:07] Christian publishers like Focus on the Family Jews for Jesus Church curriculum and

[00:42:16] other venues that I forgot but I’ve been busy doing Christian work enough that

[00:42:25] whenever I I’m thinking getting more work or do you see a mob like I get busy

[00:42:31] again with more tuition stuff and I like that better because I enjoy doing

[00:42:37] something beyond the entertaining entertainment like you have mentioned

[00:42:43] how you know comics is a good way of escape ISM I true true do you that when

[00:42:50] we are using our gifts for God in and in English ministration in comics we are we

[00:42:59] are not giving a message for people to escape from reality but to engage

[00:43:05] themselves in truth in relevance in

[00:43:11] eternity so instead of escaping God is telling you know no escape come home I

[00:43:16] love you I have something for you I made you know what I use you so it’s great to

[00:43:24] be involved in any kind of of ministry that engages people especially nowadays

[00:43:32] where you have so much things to worry about it’s great to escape in surreal

[00:43:41] and fantasy and superheroes but it’s even better when you when you read about

[00:43:48] something that may impact your life here and and and into eternity yeah

[00:43:57] absolutely that’s a that’s so true now for young artists out there who are

[00:44:03] interested in comics and so forth and they they want to do the kind of stuff that you do do you have any advice for

[00:44:08] them as far as is the comics is that is the industry that you were in is it hostile to Christianity or is it did you

[00:44:15] run into conflict with your Christian faith and the drawing you had to do or is that not the case it’s hard to tell I

[00:44:26] hear that I I’ve heard that I don’t I don’t know but I

[00:44:34] I’ve heard that because I do what I do I’m not I’m not a guy who the mainstream

[00:44:44] comics would seek out to hire because of

[00:44:53] the stuff I do it’s not popular in pop

[00:44:59] culture nowadays it’s hard I think for believers to accept every kind of job

[00:45:07] that you can get from mainstream comics because the comics reflect the world

[00:45:13] today so genomics will engage in making

[00:45:18] making stories that we’ll end up having you draw and they relate to lifestyles

[00:45:26] they are not exactly the the ones that you as a Christian would be engaged in

[00:45:32] so I I believe this it some Christian

[00:45:38] Brothers have tough choices to make when they are assigned to do something that

[00:45:43] goes against their personal beliefs yeah did you bump into other Christians often

[00:45:50] in the comic industry or or were you kind of one of the lone Ranger’s when I

[00:45:58] go to conventions and then you can definitely find a lot of missions out

[00:46:03] there there’s cushion our society there is other Christian companies who are

[00:46:13] doing similar work that I do and some of

[00:46:18] them have thanked me for the actual Bible which has broaden the market for

[00:46:23] Christians to do more of that so there

[00:46:29] are quite a few Christian material out there and I remember that when I when I

[00:46:38] was when I was busy getting involved in my freedom I dream about doing Christian

[00:46:44] work in the early in a late eighties you know I got to

[00:46:53] talk to Alan heartening I don’t know yet I’ve heard of him but how hard we drew

[00:46:59] some Christian Archie comics and he

[00:47:06] needed some some cushion related comics that Archie yeah I think I remember

[00:47:14] those because I used to read some of the Archie comics yes and when I finally met

[00:47:21] him over the phone he was ill but he told me that there was no market for

[00:47:29] Christians back then and AIDS so he did

[00:47:35] not discourage my dream he did not escape somehow I did not listen to him I

[00:47:42] did I didn’t allow what he said well he said to me to to quench my fire to do what I

[00:47:52] do and and God could be right and the

[00:47:57] actual Bible is definitely different from his perception in the age of how

[00:48:03] the market will not be open cook for ya

[00:48:09] cushion work I think that the market is

[00:48:15] open to to good quality stuff mmm-hmm Christians paid a lot of money to watch

[00:48:23] the realtor movies you know yeah Americans are not entirely atheists we

[00:48:32] have a lot of people who believe in God yeah and a lot a lot of folks that go to

[00:48:37] church they spend their money and popcorn on a movie theater watching all

[00:48:42] kinds of movies you make good movie they pay for it you make good conduct they’ll

[00:48:49] go buy it so whatever so so our moral of the story here is whatever you do work

[00:48:55] as unto the Lord and and you know I think that’s a lot of what appeals to people about the action Bible is that

[00:49:01] the quality of your artwork is just top-notch it’s way up there you know and so I just want to thank you for what you

[00:49:07] do and thanks thanks for not giving up on your dream to pursue you know artwork as well as to follow God’s call on your

[00:49:13] life and I really appreciate you being on the show today it was an honor and I and I hope I hope

[00:49:20] people get encouraged by this program and love getting instructions from you

[00:49:27] and also I’ll be checking you more often from that one thanks Sergio I really

[00:49:32] appreciate it and so for those of you listening that was Sergio Carrie yellow and the action Bible comm you can check

[00:49:39] it out there’s all kinds of amazing resources there we got Christmas coming up right around the corner here and this

[00:49:45] is a top-notch gift for the kids in your family and even for the adults in your family because you know everybody

[00:49:51] there’s a lot of people that enjoy reading comics and so if you’ve got somebody that’s an Avengers fan or a

[00:49:56] Marvel fan or DC fan out there and that’s the kind of stuff that they like well this is a great tool to be able to

[00:50:03] share with them the love of God and so I hope you have a great week we’ll be back again next week looking like we might be

[00:50:09] end up interest interviewing Walt Brown of who wrote in the beginning which is a
